@Beofett ba hahahha is this real?
@PreciousTijesunimi is he on a chain?
@PreciousTijesunimi we need a bit of a clearer pic and of his body and back. Do you have a lot of rhodesian ridgebacks in your area? what's the local mix?
11714231 a very shaky guess without eyeballing (seeing him in real life) he looks like he might be a german shepherd cross, something more solid - rhodesian ridgeback, pitbull type. This is a very rudimentary suggestion. From the pic it's hard to really know how big he is.

2:53 AM
You know how the mods have diamonds, I want a pitchfork.. no, no a trident.. hm.. definitely not a love heart.. not the lovey dovey mushy type.. anyone else want customised dooby whackers after their names?

3:04 AM
I am unaccepting most of the accepted answer to my questions, had a rethink after discussion here, it would be better to leave them open to encourage more answer. Sorry for loss in rep, I'm sure to more than make up for it with upvotes cheers. Wnated to post this here, as sure someone will make a psot about it

user15026
3:17 AM
@Skippy I like the phrase "customized dooby whackers"

5:04 AM
@AshleyNunn popular Aussie phrase :)

user15026
@Skippy It is awesome. :)

6:05 AM
Good Morning/After noon pet-keepers ..:)

7:03 AM
@hi ank
oops hi @ank

@Skippy heheheh.... position of '@' matters a lot

Why this question is closed ???

Q: Can I use human medicine on dogs?

Ankit SharmaSometimes our doctor advises us to use to use human medicines for dogs. For example, when my sister's Labrador was small, the doctor advised us to administer children's syrup for stomach disorder. Is this good advice or should we ignore it?

Read the box below the question: "put on hold as too broad"
And there is even a meta discussion on that one specifically, please contribute to it.

@Baarn too broad looks a vague to me in this context. I mean how?
@Baarn i mean i want to know is it closed because people are posting similar question with changing the pet name? or its closed just for being too broad?

@AnkitSharma For both reasons, I guess

@Baarn if its first reason then its unfair because if first case apply here. We should apply close/dupe rather then close all.

@AnkitSharma As I said it is currently decided how to handle this on meta, please voice your opinion over there:

Q: Human medications on pets

SkippyI asked this: Is it safe for me to use human medication on my pet? I realize now, this may be too broad. I suggest closing it, but it can be used to link to the other species specific questions. Can I give human medicine to chickens? Can I use human medicine on dogs? Can I give my cat human me...

10:15 AM
@Baarn i will surely answer it there. Just gathering my words.
@Baarn But i am confused between answering that question or raising my own meta because my points are little different here.

@AnkitSharma it would be good if you could phase your concerns into an answer. I think we have too many questions relating to medical advice already.
2

@Baarn @baa I was about to post this here!
great minds and all that

@AnkitSharma but If you really want to raise a different point you still should post your own question (but please make sure you note why it is different from the other one)

@ank Hi!
@AnkitSharma they are all on hold and we are trying to vote on it in meta, but there's not much activity on this one.
@Baarn I agree. We can voice our thoughts, but the community majority decides.

@Skippy @Baarn i am little busy will surely going to participate in that meta discussion later.

10:25 AM
@AnkitSharma no worries my friend

Whatever is done, please do not turn this into a close/reopen war. Some things need time to be decided. And if strong, opposing opinions have to be discussed, it is better to put some things on hold and reopen them after a decision was made.

12:15 PM
@Skippy why'd you lock this? pets.stackexchange.com/questions/400/…

OK go for it, my first answer with my own opinion as part of the answer.. as in guess work.. have a look and feel free to feedback pets.stackexchange.com/questions/759/…
@JohnB it's not locked, it's protected.

er, yeah (not awake!)
why'd you protect that? :P

Q: Are there any questions the community would like to be protected?

SkippyI thought we could have a post for people to bring question's they may want protected? I protected this question Can I use human medicine on dogs?, to prevent anomymous user's from posting answers.

@joh too lazy to repeat myself lol
oh and morning :)
I gotta pop off for a bit

There's not really any point in protecting questions during private beta, or really before they start accumulating multiple low-quality answers
4

Agree, just because you have access to certain moderator tools does not mean that you have to make use of them.

Q: Copy, Paste, Link, One Liner Answers

SkippyThere are many Copy, Paste, Link, One Liner Answers. If this is the best answer someone can post, I would strongly recommending not providing an answer. It is not an improvement on a google search, but a step back, as the person has to navigate off the site to get all the information. This is an...

Please see the edit in this question, we have a serious issue, this is happening too often and we will not be taken serisouly
@beo @joh @baa ^^^
@beo I know :(

user15026
@Skippy While I totally agree that we are having issues around this, for sure, haven't we tackled this with other meta questions?

It's the plagiarism, and I stumbled upon it. We;re going to have to check all the posts

user15026
(I thought the "using your own words" meta post handled this well

@ash we need to organise a review of the posts
let me check the user's stats

2:10 PM
We review the posts by voting on them…

user15026
Also, we might want to avoid discussing specific users in chat, with any sort of remotely identifying information - while I agree that there is an issue, for sure - remember this chat is public, and anyone can access the chat, including the person in question, and being talked about like this could be....uncomfortable at best.

@baa it's totally plagiasied, which I know it a bit issue for you

user15026
I don't want to see plagiarism and other signs of bad answers, but I am an eternal optimist and feel like anyone has the ability to change and improve, and really, hurting someone's feelings isn't cool.

@ash totally agree, I am not sure how to address it other than organise a reviw of content, to see if it isn't referenced properly, polite or not, it does need to be address

user15026
(not that we have done this, I don't think, but I figured mentioning it might be best)

user15026
2:12 PM
@Skippy A general site review is good, witch-hunting a particular user is not. :)

@ash pls I really don't want to hurt anyone.
@ash it's not witch hunting, it's being sensible, given a stream of activity, can we pls stop discussing this aspect of it

user15026
@Skippy It does, but remember, it is not our job to police content necessarily, as I mentioned in my image sourcing answer. While it would be super cool if we could fix every single plagiarism answer in the history of the site now and going forward, sometimes there needs to be other things done to stem it, like alerting a moderator or the like.

OK seem s this is not the place to discuss. I'll reveiw every post on the site (no joke) for plagiarism.

user15026
@Skippy I am not saying it is, I am saying it has the risk to be.

@ash you are like a dog with a bone, pardon the pun, seriously this is counterproductive, don't you think???

user15026
2:14 PM
@Skippy Not really, no

This is private beta, we are supposed to be evaluating the site

user15026
We are having a conversation, yes, about a problem.

@ash ^^
@ash a HUGE problem, as it is the entire viability of the site, the quality of the posts

It is counterproductive to discuss every single plagiarism, downvote and close vote on the site…

user15026
@Baarn That is what I was trying to express, thank you for saying it a bit clearer than I could.

2:16 PM
if a previously upvoted answer of 13, (until I downvoted it) was of entirely plagairised content, then there is a HUGE problem with the site, because people are voting indiscriminatly
@chad help me out here

@Skippy You can stop it any time by not participating... you are the one insisting on continuing the conversation while trying to make your point

user15026
@Skippy Sometimes, not everyone is going to notice the plagiarism, which isn't a good thing, but it is a thing that happens.

user15026
Not every user checks links and the like, because sometimes people assume good faith and think that if people are taking the time to post here, that they have read the information available about making good posts, and have done so.

@Skippy People always vote indiscriminately... one of the biggest problems we have at The Workplace is feel good answers that are wrong getting voted up

OK if the community is happy to have a site, that we are actively forming for public, to have highly upvoted posts, that are entirely unlawful, then there's nothing I can do.

2:17 PM
Plagiarism isn't inherently obvious, unless you're specifically looking for it. We can't really expect the majority of our users to do so (even though that would be ideal), so we'll have to rely upon the extra-dilligent to catch these and point them out.

@beo yes, the votes were on the plagiarised work not the user

And instead of crying plagerism the better thing to do is edit the post and quote and cite what is needed.

@Skippy Not true. You can point it out when you see it, through flags, edits, comments and/or meta discussion
2

@Skippy @Precious had some posts that plagiarized content, we informed him about this and since he has bettered his behavior. (adding links and quotes) If you are unhappy with the content, you could've done it like @Beofett did and simply edit the post.
(tagging him, as he has a right to participate in this or at least be informed)

@baa I cannot edit the post, there is nothing original in it, and besides, someone needs to have a look at the other posts. I will go do that and let you guys discuss it

user15026
2:19 PM
@Baarn and if it as noticed that it was one user over and over again, there are ways of dealing with it (such as notifying moderators and the like) which should be used, if commenting and editing fail to help the user learn how to do things in a way that is, well, more beneficial to the site.

user15026
@Skippy you can always flag them for moderator attention if you see a growing problem. :)

@Skippy I edited the post to make it clear that the entire answer is a copy and paste. I think this makes for a helpful warning sign to future viewers.

@JohnB protected is not locked

@AshleyNunn I think that he has learned how to correctly attribute. He is a frequent user on chat and he seems to be understanding about this and is willing to improve.

@Chad read like 2 lines below that

user15026
2:21 PM
@Baarn I am happy to hear that. I am not actually speaking in a specific case, however, more in general. :)

user15026
@Beofett That seems like a good way to handle the situation.

user15026
If we can source things and edit them in (even if the whole answer remains a blockquote), it is better than not having a source in there at all.

I personally do not have a problem with the occasional preemptive protection. If you think it is inapproprate flag the mods and they can reverse if they agree.

@AshleyNunn I prefer to manage these things in chat if possible. I think most users prefer it this way. Notifying moderators might seem to people like being stabbed in the back (not sure if that's the correct way to express this, hope you get what I mean).

there is a reason the rights are granted to users with enough rep and that is because sometimes users can spot problems that are not apparent pretty early

user15026
2:24 PM
@Baarn Yeah, I totally understand, but also speaking from experience, if you start discussing one user in chat (especially if tehy aren't around), tempers can flare and people can get hurt (Arqade has suffered from users quitting because they got discussed in chat without their knowledge, and upon discovering it later, they were hurt.)

@Chad there is also a reason that anonymous users can post answers. We do not need to protect questions just because we "think" it'll be an issue in the future, that's silly to me.

@Baarn Telling someone they did one thing wrong is not constructive though... especially since there is no way to unprotect

user15026
It needs to be, as anything, handled delicately, and assumed that the poster is trying to do the best they know how, until proven otherwise.

@JohnB If it is alot of questions I agree... the specific one is a borderline question at best. I do not have a problem with it

@Chad why is it borderline?

2:25 PM
@Chad Sorry, I am confused … what are you talking about?

@Baarn Not every user is willing to, or even capable, of using our chat system.

user15026
@Beofett There is that, as well.

@JohnB The question is borderline acceptable... it is very near to a poll

user15026
@Chad Then closing it or editing it to make it a better question would be a better idea than protecting it.

@Chad ehm, then it should just be closed in my opinion. Which it already is. Protecting it serves no purpose

2:26 PM
@Beofett true, but that specific user is. That's why I said I prefer :)

@JohnB It was not at the time of protecting...

@Baarn I wasn't sure, as I don't recall seeing them in chat.

@Chad that does not validate the reason to protect it.

I think the intent on protecting has been clarified pretty well in this case. Discussing that one instance feels a bit like beating the proverbial deceased equine....
2

I wonder if every private beta goes through this stage of discussing fundamental features of Stack Exchange that have been around since the dawn of time itself … :P

2:29 PM
Give users the benefit of the doubt that they were trying to do what they thought was best. If there becomes a pattern then discuss it, if there is a problem cause by the actions get a mod involved to reverse it. Taking someone to task in chat is not productive
6

@Baarn not in my experience, this has been the most active private beta that I've been a part of which is a good sign!

user15026
@Chad This is my opinion as well.

@Chad that's why I asked Skippy why it was protected instead of flat out saying it was the wrong thing to do :)

@JohnB What followed was basically taking him to task though.

@Chad not sure I agree, two people voiced their opinion on the matter and the conversation was over
then you brought it back up

2:37 PM
I am starting to regret getting involved here :(

in this conversation, or in the site?

@Beofett I saw thanks
@AshleyNunn yes I already have, I am going through posts (not of one user) and systematically checking for plagarism, where an edit means there is no original content, as there's not point having it here. I'll continue. I only brought it here to see if anyone was interested in helping me go through them, which is why I was annoyed debating other issues, I just want to do a quality control review.

Q: Members discussing other members

SkippyI would like to make a suggestion. I suggest that SE considers adopting a policy of Not discussing members publicly on the site. To me it is totally at odds with the sites aim of being Q&A and not a forum, and it brings down any professionalism the site seeks within certain sub sites. There are ...

Given the poor reception this post got, I figured it was ok to bring issues to chat. I wan't being mean about anyone, just discussing an issue.. I can't keep up with Stack Exchange

user15026
@Skippy Okay, that was not super clear from your mentioning of noticing a specific user's problem. A review of site content is a great thing to do, for sure! :) (Its why we have things like the review queues and the like, to help with the process, in some ways. It doesn't take the place of manually poking at questions, because we will always notice things the scripts don't, but still. I digress.) I love how much initiative people here have taken to help make the site better!

@Skippy things will be smoother once we have moderators. Right now, there's not really anyone else to discuss these sort of things with (especially if it needs to be done in private)
we've got the comms team, but they're busy with other things

user15026
2:53 PM
@JohnB Yeah, considering the giant size of the network, it is hard to expect them to be able to tackle every little issue. Once there are mods that can be prodded, I suspect it might go a lot better.

@AshleyNunn Not to mention they're all tied up in a summit this week

user15026
@Beofett Oh, yes, there is that as well. :)

@AshleyNunn apparently they're on break now, from the activity we have on the site over the past few minutes :)

user15026
@Beofett Lucky us!

3:11 PM
@AshleyNunn I was trying to get to the point of wanting help, if you go back through the chat transcript, you'll see I didn't want to discuss users, I wanted to address reviewing posts, of this user, yes, and others (all of them, I mean by that)

@JohnB Yes

user15026
@Skippy I understand that now, but thanks for being super clear about it now to me :) I appreciate that

@JohnB Yes, good point. sometimes the CMs just need to be pinged to have a look, as things get a little chaotic, and it's unnecessary. I totally fail in my attempts to try to rally the troops to do things. I was tired and wanted to go to bed, but Im the sort of person it will bother. That's why I asked for help

@Skippy nobody's holding it against you, I hope you're not taking any resistance personally!
I think your enthusiasm and activism is awesome

@AshleyNunn that's ok, I've reveiw many posts and have a system, so I can keep up with them. It means following links and checking content.. I can come across a bit terse, it's because I just want to get on with the job so to speak. so sorry about that part

user15026
3:14 PM
@Skippy Just out of curiosity, because I know there is a time difference, what time is it for you now? (I am trying to get a handle on when people are active, for my own curiousness.)

user15026
@JohnB I agree! you are super enthusiastic, @skippy, and that is really awesome to see.

@JohnB Not really. We do not have a lot of bad content that needs to be dealt with that I have seen. Mods are not here to be referees they are here to take care of the exceptions and those things that regular users cant

@JohnB No, not at all. I a, pushy and, probaly older than most of the people here, so assume a bossy attitude, it comes with age and having children etc etc

They are not even supposed to be leaders they are supposed to let the community choose its course
4

@Chad true. the issue is having people with enough expertise to review posts. As you do with the rabbits

3:16 PM
@Chad I was referring to what Skippy was talking about: talking with individual users in private to discuss potential issues
we don't have a platform to do that, until then

Anyway, I really will go now. will review a few more and then go to snooze land :)

user15026
@Chad Like guiding winds for the great ship Pets.SE, so to speak.

@JohnB There is the SE team that will step in if needed

@Chad yeah, but as I said: they're very busy. Mods will make things go smoother :)

BTW I am only being so thorough becasue we are in private beta, so things need to be aired and vetted (pardon the pun).

3:17 PM
just a few more weeks of bumpiness

@pre hi
I am leaving now
good night all

@Skippy You've been leaving for a few hours now :D

Can I Put my dog's picture now?

in chat? Heck yes!

@JohnB I want to know his breed any yesterday I was asked to post a picture of him

3:19 PM
@JohnB We do not have a lot of needs here that they will be able to address. The mods are not going to be here leading the charge they are going to deal with people breaking the rules but unless you are making personal attacks they are not able to do much. Trust me we lost some good mods on The Workplace because they could not do anything about someone gaming the rules
actually it was 2 someones

@Chad Yeah, and in this case Skippy was talking about someone breaking the rules. That to me is something that I (as a mod) would prefer to discuss with someone in private via mod message

Go check out the mess that is politics... I have had a personal conversation with Yannis and despite the desire to step in and fix it they are not allowed

I'm not talking about mods leading the charge or ruling the site
So I appreciate Skippy's vagueness and avoiding pointing fingers in this case, not a healthy thing to do :)

I am not good with breed identification
looks like a dingo :D

3:29 PM
@JohnB whats a dingo?

@PreciousTijesunimi a wild dog from Australia
really, don't count on me though. I'm far from the person to be asking

@JohnB OK Thanks

Is there a meta question on breed identification yet?

@JohnB I don't think so

If it was discussed in chat, I didn't see it. It might be a good question to bring up on meta, I think it is inevitable that we will get someone asking a question
Not sure if we want them to be on topic or not. Thoughts, @Beofett @Chad @AshleyNunn ?

user15026
3:35 PM
It depends how definitive they are, I think

Yeah, when you get into complex mixes then it's going to be difficult

user15026
Like I have an instinctive dislike for identify my X questions but that comes from my activeness on Arqade where we have dealt with identify-this-game bringing in crap content

I dislike them… they are not searchable at all

user15026
@JohnB yeah, that is my worry, that there will be a lot of cases where it isn't going to be distinctive enough

I believe Biology.se allows species identification, and get a fair number of questions on the tag.

user15026
3:37 PM
and they are super specific to the user who asked them, and thus not applicable to the wider internet

However, I'm not sure how practical that would be here.

@Baarn Good to see you are back. Can you help me out here?

I think this chat room should be the preferred vehicle for breed identification

user15026
@Beofett I think that might not work so well here.

user15026
@Beofett I like this idea! :)

3:38 PM
@PreciousTijesunimi with identification of your dog?

Graphic design has a font identification tag, but I know there are mixed feelings about it. We allow them, but we try to make them as searchable as possible. Such as, "What font is used for Stack Exchange's logo" as opposed to every question being "What font is this?"

@Baarn Yes

@PreciousTijesunimi Sadly not, I'm not sure either…

user15026
@JohnB Making things searchable and something that someone else might also be looking for is important

indeed

user15026
3:39 PM
but like if people are just like here is my dog/cat/fish/ferret whatever here is a picture it doesn't seem viable

user15026
like I have a cat I rescued from my parents' backyard, and even with a picture, I doubt anyone can answer "what breed is my cat"

user15026
other than mixed up backyard special

All cats are just cats to me :D
Normal cats and Sphynx cats
and then the ones with the squished faces

user15026
@JohnB are those the furless ones?

@AshleyNunn yeah

3:41 PM
@JohnB Those are called grumpy-cat-wannabe-breed

user15026
@JohnB I know Himalayan cats have squished faces because my mom has one, but I think there are other breeds too

user15026
@JohnB I always feel like I should knit them sweaters.

@AshleyNunn I'm sure there are many actual breeds, I'm just ignorant to all of them

user15026
@JohnB I dont know a lot about specifics, myself.

maybe I can formulate a question out of this..does the breed of cat have an effect on its behavior?
Apparently so: dogtime.com/…
(why is there information about cats on dogtime.com?!)

user15026
3:46 PM
@JohnB I have long stopped trying to understand why the internet does what it does ;)

haha

4:00 PM
Sorry, I got sidetracked, but I've started a meta question regarding pet identification for those interested.
3
I'm going to post my answer in a minute

@JohnB a dingo
@PreciousTijesunimi where do you live? he looks like a rhodesian ridgeback cross
@Beofett yes, as long as people don't jump in with guesses and can provide good reasons for their answers :P

@Skippy Just posted my answer (which is a suggested "no")

4:27 PM
@Beofett nice posts!

user15026
@Beofett Awesom, very well worded :) I love how active this community is around tackling issues before they become gargantuan and difficult.

@JohnB @AshleyNunn Thanks to both of you :)

4:54 PM
@PreciousTijesunimi I suspect it is some sort of mixed breed.
Any chance we can change the chat room name? The litter box seems very cat specific

14
Q: What should our chat room name be?

JohnBRight now, our chat room's name is just Pets. I think we can do better than that, what sort of clever and appropriate name could we use instead?

Chime in :)

2 hours later…
6:52 PM
@Chad cat specific in which sense?
Anyways you can suggest a better title and if other agrees with you room-name can be changed.
My reputaion bar is really very green and red. Thanx to Robert Cartaino♦ for ending the war of question for human medicines on pets

7:39 PM
@AnkitSharma the litter box is basically assocated with cats

@Chad And ferrets, and possibly rabbits/guinea pigs/chinchillas... but yeah, mostly cats.

@Beofett Ask 100 kids what animal uses a litter box... how many you think answer cats

It's just a name, propose a new one on that other thread if you are interested in renaming

@jonsca There are several already there.

@Chad I wasn't saying you were wrong... I definitely agree it is primarily associated with cats. I was just pointing out that it isn't quite exclusive to them

7:44 PM
I am proposing not this one

so, downvote this one :)
and any others that are animal specific

I am asking for the support of others

The room name doesn't define the topic, most of the chat room names are puns, etc

I personally like meagerie

@Chad I already downvoted it (and upvoted menagerie)

7:46 PM
This one bothers me more for what goes on in the litter box... i considered scratching post but again too catty
but scratching post would not bother me like this does
I shivver with revushion every time i click the link to come in

How about something more pets have in common?
Like the things they sleep in?
or on?
"my owners lap"

Anything but the place where they go pee and poo.

oh god

user15026
@Baarn That can have weird connotations

@AshleyNunn I wasn't completely serious about it

user15026
7:48 PM
@Baarn Fair enough :)

user15026
Menagerie might work well. I guess it comes down to eventually reaching some sort of meta consensus, if we can. :)

@Baarn would probably need a (sometimes NSFW) in the title :p

Thought we did already

We will never find a name for a room everyone is happy about… I don't even really like cats (I know in how much danger saying this on the internet puts me), but I liked litter box for its connotation.

Like I said I am just begging for support to change the existing name

user20683
7:51 PM
The Water Bowl?

user20683
granted that excludes fish

user20683
but still

Feeding Time

user15026
I suspect the name of the room, like other things will not please everyone no matter what we pick

user15026
@WorldEngineer I am totally totally totally reaching here, but fish can live in bowls of water? At least stereotypically.

user20683
7:55 PM
"The Owner's Table"?
