Q: Do we want a blog?

Matt ЭлленAs many of you know, we have a blog. For those of you who didn't know, that's no surprise as we haven't added new content since July last year. Last time we tried to get contributors for the blog, we came up with a list of topic ideas, enough for fortnightly content for a few months. It started ...

7 hours later…
3:07 PM
hello!

No
Yes

Maybe

Hello

hola

3:08 PM
Hello

Who has thoughts on the meta question?

I think the more appropriate question is: Do we want to write a blog? And the answer seems to be no, we don't, since we really haven't. — MrHen 2 mins ago
Me being my cynical self.

yes. I equate wanting a blog with wanting to write a blog in the post. we don't seem to have one at the moment.
well, not an active one

Right

I don't know what the powers who are would do with an inactive blog. Maybe wait for people who want to make it active again?

3:15 PM
Not sure. At this point, I think the only real path forward is just letting anyone who wants to post something when they feel like it.
What I can do is proofread/edit because it doesn't take me that long
But that isn't the bottleneck

Hi!

@MrHen that would go against the idea of having a target audience. I don't think that will change a thing
people can already do that
we advertise on the main site that you can do that

@MattЭллен I agree. But I don't see better options. :P

I could make it my personal blog for EL&U modding.

if you like :D

3:16 PM
@MattЭллен I don't think people actually read the sidebar. :P

We have a sidebar?

@KitFox yes but it can't sell alcohol until after 8pm

grumbles, hides flask
I don't think I'd stay as moderator for long.

@KitFox Actually, having a mod-blog wouldn't be terrible. Communities tend to respond better when mods communicate publicly

Too much griping about how dumb some certain users are.

3:18 PM
Not that I have any idea what you'd post about

How dumb certain users are.
How much I hate people.

Haha

How annoying the new enthusiasts can be.

constructive criticism can be good

The only relevant topics I'd feel like posting about are (a) tutorials on how to use Data.SE (b) how to find work to do on ELU (c) opinions on how to answer questions more effectively

3:21 PM
Yes. Great. Perfect.

Or, in other words, I'm more interested in talking about ELU than about English

that's cool, if we define the blog in those terms
maybe you could have the odd guest article about English, but focus on EL&U

@MattЭллен I think that's worth a shot if you can get people to actually write something
The good news is that most of the people who post massive Meta posts are already talking about ELU so it shouldn't be hard to filter some of those conversations into OpEd blog posts

I wouldn't subscribe to a blog that only discusses how to use ELU.

aye
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 it wouldn't necessarily be "how to use" but news about the site

3:26 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I'm not really thinking it needs to be just about ELU. I'm just noting that I'm more willing to write about ELU.

Fair enough.

So an ideal content spread would probably be 50% "Heavy" English; 25% ELU topics; 25% "Intermediate" English?
It's hard to guess

That'd work for me.

@MattЭллен Do you have a list of the hit counts for the existing blog posts?

But I'm hardly typical.

3:29 PM
I would say if there aren't any contributers who want to write about English and two contributors who want to write about the site, well, there's not going to be any posts about English.

@MattЭллен Well, yeah :P

@MrHen yes. Prescritivism vs Descriptivism is the most popular post

@MattЭллен What are the others?
Are we just getting hits from search engines?

it's difficult to see, exactly.
oh, I've found a table...
I'm trying to see all time
that's for this week
anyway. I'ma commute.

Bye!
