Thanks for the reply.

@derobert Ah :) That's what I thought, I could maybe use debian in a VM and I would install an older gcc there.

Q: compiling the 3.3 linux kernel in 2016

gideon[Update]: So I hope this is clear, essentially the kernel is wired to check the installed gcc version. So it doesn't seem to build with gcc6. One error more or less causes another one. I'm trying to follow this book : Writing linux device drivers. The book works with v2.6.31 but he has updated...

I'm really sorry to poke you guys but could you please take a look at this Q please :) Purty please

Glad I could share it with you. He's a guy with 3 MIT degrees who left his to make this site, eventually funded by google and Bill Gates foundation.

His math practice system is all AI based ;)

Anyway, I got concrete math on my iPad now. Lets see how that goes. Couldn't get shut-eye for hours over this and now it's 3am! I'm off to bed. Thanks @Boni @skillpatrol and everyone else who got involved in my hairy conversation I appreciate it :D
Oct 4, 2015 21:07
@Boni can be be more detailed, implement what exactly?
Oct 4, 2015 21:04
Just haven't practised enough of the stuff to solve problems quickly.
Oct 4, 2015 21:04
@skillpatrol that makes sense. Under the chapter sums I see a "Finite and In􏰌finite Calculus" sub heading, I don't know all too much calculus but I do know what a limit, derivative and Integral is.
Oct 4, 2015 21:01
True. Yep. I've got a kindle version :D
Oct 4, 2015 20:57
It is on my endless reading list.
Oct 4, 2015 20:57
@skillpatrol that one I've looked at and it looks scary.
Oct 4, 2015 20:54
Or perhaps a kindle version.
Oct 4, 2015 20:54
There's a hard cover version that costs like $100 ! wow. But given that I've tried so many options I might actually buy it.
Oct 4, 2015 20:53
@skillpatrol ah. Thanks. Yep. I've heard of this one.
Oct 4, 2015 20:49
Because I have many programmers who say that math is not a requirement, but in my case, I do want to understand the math under the programming.
Oct 4, 2015 20:48
But I'm hoping it's not a waste of time.
Oct 4, 2015 20:48
@Boni so I've started studying math on khanacademy.org and it's been slow :(
Oct 4, 2015 20:47
@Boni yep, Yes, I could perhaps look at quick sort and be able to write in my primary coding language. But it's mostly when I get to the algorithm books like Knuth or Skiena that it's plain gibberish to me.
Oct 4, 2015 20:45
Ah! Thanks
Oct 4, 2015 20:45
@skillpatrol @skillpatrol puzzles.stackexchange.com ??
Oct 4, 2015 20:43
Hmm. I've had interviews from Japan, Netherlands, Germany and they've asked a lot of algorithmic problems that require fast thinking.
Oct 4, 2015 20:42
So is my assumption correct that if I study math (discrete and calculus) I should understand these algorithm books better and therefore have a better grasp and program harder problems better.
Oct 4, 2015 20:40
And when I read the algorithm books like the one I mentioned earlier, it's got tons of discrete math that I don't know yet.
Oct 4, 2015 20:40
No no, I don't want to avoid math in any way. I want the better jobs out there. Some very high paying, but I don't get through the interview when it comes to the puzzle problems like on project Euler or code jam.
Oct 4, 2015 20:38
@Agawa001 I need to work on my SQL but yes I have some DB experience. MS SQL.
Oct 4, 2015 20:37
@Agawa001 Over the years I've gotten bored of programming business programs.
Oct 4, 2015 20:35
@Agawa001 @Lucas I don't mean math came from programming, I certainly understand how math is the underpinning of everything...
Oct 4, 2015 20:34
I got this book : http://www.amazon.com/Algorithm-Design-Manual-Steven-Skiena/dp/1849967202

and I'm having a hard time following all the math that comes along with it! :(
Oct 4, 2015 20:34
To be specific, I got this book :
Oct 4, 2015 20:34
what do you mean?
Oct 4, 2015 20:33
I see. @Agawa001 I wish that were the case for me. It's the other way around for me. Programming is pushing me into math.
Oct 4, 2015 20:32
Sometimes it's based on advanced high school math, but sometimes just based on a well known algorithm.
Oct 4, 2015 20:31
However, there are a number of challenging interviews I'd like to get by better where they ask a lot of algorithmic problems.
Oct 4, 2015 20:30
@Huy Maybe we're alike, I've been programming for years and get paid a nice sum for doing a data collection application. No math involved.
Oct 4, 2015 20:12
@Agawa001 I mean, Does learning math => (number, theory, geometry, statistics, calculus, linear algebra etc) help you with programming problems, especially the puzzling kind, like google code jam ?
Oct 4, 2015 14:55
I would think so but I would want a confirmation.
Oct 4, 2015 14:55
So for learning I can take my time, but I do need to get a better job sooner than later, I'm highly paid from where I live but I need the money. When I've tried for jobs with major companies many times I've got stuck at programming puzzles and that are quite mathy I'm wondering if anyone knows what I'm talking about? They're just puzzling and hard programs, say like google code jam Will studying math make me better at this?
Oct 4, 2015 14:50
I don't want this to sound like the typical question asked. I'm a programmer. I'm quite interested in math but I'm not very good at it. I'm slowly working my way through Khan Academy's Algebra and Trig and maybe break through the calculus barrier. My math pursuit is two fold, pure learning and getting better Programming jobs.
Jul 24, 2015 09:49
thanks :)
Jul 24, 2015 09:41
:22980623 that's a nice way to put it.
Jul 24, 2015 09:33
@skillpatrol I would love to do that.
Jul 24, 2015 09:33
@skillpatrol this I have begun. I've practiced plenty algebra at khanacademy.org and I continue to do so... but you're saying I have hope without a tutor ?
Jul 24, 2015 09:28
@Huy I can't privately at 25 do a high school qualification in my country. I have to attend a school. Which won't accept me because I have a "gap" or years off after 10th grade. And no one cares that I worked or anything.... A levels is the only choice..
Jul 24, 2015 09:26
@Huy if they didn't they probably took local equivalent qualifications. Which is another story.
Jul 24, 2015 09:25
@Huy the US is out for me, getting a visa for anything, even tourism is upto a flip of a coin (going from the country I'm at)
Jul 24, 2015 09:24
@Huy Top Universities in the UK only take A Levels. Our standard minimum A-level offer is A* AA - A*AAA with an A* in Maths from imperial.ac.uk/study/ug/courses/computing-department/…
Jul 24, 2015 09:18
The extremely high ranking univ. have CS degrees that are completely math based. So they require math. They prefer your you if you have Math, Further Math in your subject list.
Jul 24, 2015 09:16
@Boni The top universities do.
Jul 24, 2015 09:16
But what even you're saying is "Out with the tutor"
