@Shalvenay Is the characteristic of the "ranch panel" that the meter head is integral to it? A motivating factor for this design is the installation of a grid-tie battery-backed solar system, which would need to sit between the meter and the main panel.

(I am requiring ensuring grounding of outlets and GFCIs in all wet locations.)

The 1998 update apparently did not involve a code reset from 1962.

Full panel requires a code reset.

Perhaps HOM12M200PRB?
Apr 11, 2024 18:12
In either case, I'm trying to find a small panel that can handle this, perhaps 12 spaces? (It looks like the 150A branch breakers take 4, and I would like to add a few more branches, but don't need "full panel" size, but I'm not sure how to find the correct panel, since the usual expectation is that the main panel is the big one and the subpanel is the small one.)
Apr 11, 2024 18:10
@Shalvenay Do you mean that most panels that I might use as the new main can feed a 150A branch to the existing, new subpanel? The existing panel has a 150A main breaker; do I need an OCD on the upstream end as well, regardless of positioning?

I probably should have specified US, though I think the product lines are largely similar globally.

I've done the load calculations; a primary reason for upgrading is that the utility has incentives that are only available with a minimum of 200A. The utility will upgrade the service conductors on request. I'm not really asking for advice on the question of upgrading service to 200A; I'm trying to identify which specific panel products would be suitable for taking the incoming main conductors, feeding 150A (1 AWG) to the existing panel, and having some (a few) spaces for new branches.
Apr 4, 2024 22:05
What specifically do you mean by "uprating"? I inquired with the manufacturer, and the existing main panel is already at its maximum capacity. The idea behind keeping the existing panel is simply that everything is already installed and working, and it would be expensive and a hassle to move all the circuits.

Request for shopping help with electrical:

I'm considering purchasing a home that has a Square D HOM30M150RB. It has additional spaces, but the main breaker is maxed out at 150A, and I would want to upgrade to 200A to add some circuits and for other reasons. My thought is to add a small new-main panel and feed the current panel as a subpanel, but I'm not sure what product I'm looking for; everything rated for 200A and up that I see is a full-home load center with 42 spaces and everything. Do I even need an OCD for the sub feed on the new-main panel, or does the main on the existing panel f

It may be worth noting that with a moderate amount of practice, most people can learn to change magazines in about 2 seconds.

One note about fuel economy: Moving at a constant speed, the load of your car contributes very little to the efficiency calculation; it's mostly about wind resistance. If you get on the interstate and drive fairly flat at a consistent speed, you will probably get much better fuel economy than you seem to expect.

K2 was chosen entirely on the basis of its CW pattern! (I'm an Extra and would have loved to had K2/N2CS, but those are taken until after the scheduled collapse of the USA, so...)
Feb 24, 2021 22:27
I'm entirely joking. I'm brand-new on this particular SE, but you can check my network profile; been around a while.

I downloaded it and have it on my tablet. Koch is the one that sends at the target speed, starting with just two letters until you can copy reliably. Considering modifying my profile; is the convention around here just to put it in the text box (won't be putting it in my username)?
Feb 23, 2021 02:32
I am now! My plan has been to try the Koch method with one of the software trainers.

I'm not a CW guy yet, but it's a goal! The main page for ULS loads fine, but once you start clicking on the links, it goes so slowly as to occasionally time out, and if you click on a link twice it logs you out (?!). The ae7q calendar links just look to be running a day behind and should show the link to my page tomorrow.
Feb 22, 2021 18:35
I wish I could have had K2CS, which is my initials and sounds fantastic on CW, but fat chance of a juicy 1x2 ;-)
Feb 22, 2021 18:27
I actually waffled and changed the order on my list, which reset my receipt date, but ah, well. ae7q didn't have a link to 02-20, but I manually changed the URL and saw myself on the list. I don't think there's going to be any problem, I'm just bored (especially after having been cooped up for so long, plus this past week)!

@MikeWaters Currently AI5BO. I expected it to go through on Friday, but figured there are all kinds of reasons for delays right now but that it might happen today. My original authorization was e-mailed to me early in the morning.

@MikeWaters I linked to that question in my question, which is very specifically about an aspect of the process not addressed there.

@Nelson Even a 6-year-old is capable of grasping the concept "you borrowed an apple and have to put it back to be even".
Oct 5, 2020 18:24
@RustyCore In my personal experience, that question presents itself quite readily even in the first or second grade (along with "but what happens if you do take 3 apples away from 2 apples?"). I cannot comprehend not introducing negative numbers until grade 6.

@jamesqf No sane person would have wanted to live in the frozen wastelands of Scandinavia when the balmy Mesopotamia or Mediterranean were available, either.

@SirDuckduck, please do keep in mind that "sausage fest" is extremely informal and borders on the offensive in certain contexts. It's not interchangeable with "poker night" or "weekend with the guys".

I'd say it's more of a "stop what you're doing or we'll escalate".

@SebastianBechtel That definition would be manifestly untenable for fields such as physics where collaborations routinely have hundreds of members.

This is an inaccurate analogy. Close melee weapons switched to bludgeoning with the development of full plate precisely because impact can still do serious injury through plate armor. The conclusion is correct, but the example doesn't work.

Mar 13, 2020 16:49
Okay, that provides useful information. Can you also confirm the CPU clock speed at the time? (In Linux, this is under /proc/cpuinfo; note that it can change from second to second in response to load.)
Mar 13, 2020 16:49
How exactly are you measuring CPU usage on each platform? It's possible that you're seeing Linux slowing down the processor to save power and using 50% of a slower speed. It's also possible (since 12*4 ~= 50) that you're looking at a single-processor load on Linux and a whole-system load on Windows; you have a 4-thread processor.

@jamesqf A "suit" is an identical matched pair of jacket and trousers (and maybe waistcoat). A "sport jacket" is an unmatched jacket intended to be worn with contrasting pants.
