Now that you have a geoJSON file with the correct projection, you can start following Bostock's tutorial. I think your main problem was the coordinates. You'll need to deal with the projections. The tutorial covers that.

It was the coordinates systems. The projections. The default for geoJSON is WGS84. Yours uses something else. It might be weird for outsiders but it is normal for the people here, hence the downvotes.

@Jurg Wait, now I'm confused. Were you able to convert the shapefile to geoJSON already? Only that it doesn't work with Bostock's code?
