Clark is working to mimic that 19th century tone, which is more, call it people- and manners-oriented. It also has some structural differences, like much longer and complex sentence structures than the more modern 'one statement per sentence' style that Douglas has.

@JustinAlexander I'd say, given those specific excerpts, the main difference appears to be the topical approach--ex. Adams, being a big fan of technology and its possible directions, spends a lot of time in his work sharing that interest with the reader.

As far as 'what makes them tick' and the other comparisons you want made, this seems to be a pretty involved analysis. Are you doing some kind of review/comparison work on these two books specifically?
Dec 8, 2015 03:29
That's a pretty broad question. I know HHG, don't know Jonathan Strange. A brief Google indicates that it is a novel that was adapted into a TV series. So which version are you comparing?

G'night :)
Dec 1, 2015 09:56
But yarrrrrrrrr turns into yawn
Dec 1, 2015 09:55
I think 'they' is becoming the default English gender neutral pronoun, in spite of people's dislike of its plurality.

Also going to bed soon, but if I haven't said hi to you today @BESW, then hi!

Dec 1, 2015 05:02
More comfortable, I hope!
Dec 1, 2015 05:00
I'm going to try to go to bed earlier than last night, but it'll still be awhile.
Dec 1, 2015 04:58
Ah, then timely g'night then :)
Dec 1, 2015 04:56
And g'night, sleep well...same to Jasper though he disappeared fast, heh.
Dec 1, 2015 04:56
Ah, si si. I shot you a quick email from my more recently made gmail acct, Kit, so you know it's me.
Dec 1, 2015 04:55
I think it evolved from the statement 'good to go' or 'okay to go' meaning 'ready to go'
Dec 1, 2015 04:54
'bout 2 hours to go before it's Dec here.
Dec 1, 2015 04:49
Yep, means all is good.
Dec 1, 2015 04:48

Dec 1, 2015 04:46
Uh, probably somewhere. I know I have you on Tumblr too, so we could message that way if you need.
Dec 1, 2015 04:46

Dec 1, 2015 04:46
We-elll...let me organize the bits kind of worth reading, and send 'em to you. A few days maybe?

Nov 30, 2015 22:19
I suppose that could be a good thing if you need some gravitas.
Nov 30, 2015 22:18
Tabernacle seems much more cumbersome than fuck, for emphasis purposes.
Nov 30, 2015 22:12
Oh, in English, fuck is almost a metaword, it can serve pretty much any purpose now.
Nov 30, 2015 22:12
...tabernacle is a swear word? O.o
Nov 30, 2015 22:10
Aroo?
Nov 30, 2015 22:09
Hm, fair enough. As a complete monolinguist I have no idea either, heh.
Nov 30, 2015 22:06
Does 'bitch' 'd'chienne' have the same connotation in French as it does in English I wonder?
Nov 30, 2015 22:06
I love it
Nov 30, 2015 22:05

Nov 30, 2015 22:05
Wait...shit shit son of a dog?
Nov 30, 2015 22:04
If Great-Aunt Esther doesn't speak French...
Nov 30, 2015 22:04
The nice thing about bilingual swearing is it opens up more social options for swearing.
Nov 30, 2015 22:03
Take care Kit! We can pound some words whenev.
Nov 30, 2015 22:03
Also, yes, that fine art of environmental/social discrimination.
