The age limit of 21 for alcohol is somewhat unusual internationally. Elsewhere, it’s often 18 or 16 (for some types of drinks).

This is a graph of the German tax rates (the blue dashed line): upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/06/… As you can see, the progression is continuous and not in steps. (I’m sure I've linked that same graph before, on another similar question; but I can’t find it.)

@rexkogitans: The German (and Austrian) Länder are usually called states in English. You would speak of Germany, Austria etc. as countries.
Apr 10, 2018 17:14
@Martin Bonner: The important thing here is that A and B numbers are unique for Germany, whereas L numbers are unique only for a single Land (so there probably are 16 different “L8”s, unless the number happens to be unused in a few of the states). K numbers are duplicated even more often, and aren’t used in everyday life, only for administrative purposes. – Of course, E numbers are unique for all of the EU.

There are many more conceivable reasons. See theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/mar/13/… for some ideas.

The first paragraph assumes that preventing the transfer of knowledge is the only possible motive.

The charges weren’t dropped. The article you link to for that claim quotes Marianne Ny, prosecutor: “In order to proceed with the case, Julian Assange would have to be formally notified of the criminal suspicions against him. We cannot expect to receive assistance from Ecuador regarding this. Therefore the investigation is discontinued. If he, at a later date, makes himself available, I will be able to decide to resume the investigation immediately.”

@walen: No, you never need a passport within the EU (and in fact I haven’t owned one for the last fifteen years or so). But people, especially people from countries where national ID cards are uncommon, loosely say “passport” when they mean “passport or national ID card”. People may also loosely say “country’s passport” for “country’s citizenship”.

@janh: Yes – trade, possession and use of most drugs is a crime in Sweden (with the common exceptions of alcohol and nicotine). So the situation is somewhat similar, except that this policy on drugs is more widespread globally than the Swedish asymmetrical policy on prostitution.
Dec 27, 2017 05:29
@Draif Kroneg: Note that all this is immaterial to this question, which is not “What is the best way for a country to deal with prostitution?” or similar. However, I don’t think you have properly understood the point of view that is prevailing in Sweden: It is not just about human trafficking or force; prostitutes who have decided themselves to work in this “industry” are also considered in (psychological) danger.

Furthermore, it seems this is a No, not a Yes: Charles can’t abdicate out of his own free will, he needs the parliaments’ approval.
Dec 18, 2017 12:57
A complication would be that the other realms that Charles is also the heir to (Canada, Australia, etc.) would need to pass equivalent laws.

@CramerTV: I think nobody will claim that hurricanes are a new thing that only came up with the industrial development, because that is obviously wrong (we have historical records of storms from centuries before any man-made climate change started). However, hurricanes get their energy from moving over warm water – which, incidentally, also explains why they quickly lose a lot of their power after making landfall. So it is quite plausible that higher temperatures of ocean waters (due to climate change) will make storms stronger and also push minor tropical storms over the hurricane threshold.

@SJuan76: I think you misunderstood the numbering part. It’s not about appearing religious vs. non-religious; rather, it’s about different religious groups dividing the text into (numbered) sections differently, so choosing any particular numbering could be seen as a statement in favour of, e.g., Catholicism.

This is indeed a theory/practice difference. In theory, where the 112 is operated by the fire brigade (“integrierte Leitstellen”, centres that handle calls both for the police and the fire brigade, are increasingly common in Germany), they should put you through to the police where appropriate; but I’ve had the same experience as you, unfortunately. In my case, it wasn’t that urgent – a car accident with a roe deer; no humans injured, and even the deer was able to flee on its own legs –, and I called 112 because there was no coverage for 110. I insisted, and in the end I got put through.

Another data point: NW Baden-Württemberg, S Lower Saxony, didn’t know the term nor immediately understood it. It clearly doesn’t seem an issue of regionality; perhaps it was popularized by a film, or a book, or a TV series in some groups but not others?
