I think we're just repeating ourselves.

It says you can make a spell attack by throwing or hurling it. It follows you can choose not to make a spell attack by not throwing or hurling it.

You could choose to allow the caster (or maybe thrower, if different) to activate it or not, but the answer to SeriousBri's question is "No".

And you make that spell attack by "throwing it or hurling it with a sling". There's nothing to support the idea that throwing it might or might not make the spell attack.

The words "if you make a ranged spell attack" do not appear in the description. I guess technically if "throwing it or hurling it with a sling" triggers the spell attack, then you could make a normal attack by hurling it from something that isn't a sling. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet-shooting_crossbow

"you can make a spell attack" means you have a choice, and don't have to make a spell attack, but that could be because you have the option of not using it at all.

dndbeyond.com/spells/magic-stone says if the pebble is used for an attack, it does damage equal to "1d6 + your spellcasting ability modifier". That's not "normal rock damage". It doesn't say it "can" do that damage.

But if the thing that you can do with the stone to make a spell attack is throwing it like a normal rock, how do you do the same thing without making a spell attack? "It usually works" doesn't matter, because "usually" you haven't cast Magic Stone on it.

@HenryTaylor before "Peter Pan" was a film or novel, it was a stage play. Peter appeals to the theatre audience to save her - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_and_Wendy#Plot_summary (Whether any production has ever decided not enough children were clapping and allowed Tinkerbell to die, I don't know.)

In context I think it's reasonable to read "those hot, spicy foods" (my emphasis) as a claim specifically about chilis. And a followup comment says: 'By hot, spicy Thai, Indian, Malay food I was using shorthand for "hot by means of chili". I'm well aware that before chilli we used to use black pepper to spice our food but these days most asians consider black pepper to be in the category of "not hot and spicy" food'. cooking.stackexchange.com/questions/93840/…

There's the Anthropic Principle. If demons were that powerful and didn't have any weakness, there would be no non-demons left alive to ask about the nature of demons. That doesn't explain how the weakness works, but it does in a way explain why one exists.

Lock your bike to a bike rack on a windy day. Come back later. Is the bike still there? Ground speed is zero. Did you put any work into keeping it there? No.

There's a simple way to demonstrate that the velocity in F x V is ground speed.
