I actually think that not misgendering people is very important - I would no more want to use the wrong pronouns than the wrong name (which is ironic since I'm extremely bad at remembering names...). And I think that SE considering this is a good thing. But the way the CoC, and especially the FAQ, are written, is not good, and the way they have treated Monica is abysmal - even if she had violated the CoC (which I've seen no evidence of), this would still have been the wrong way to go about it.

(The other issue is between AO3 and a subset of SF/F fandom who are being very concerned that fanfic writers joke about having won a Hugo)
Oct 16, 2019 15:42
Yes. I'm very fed up with the situation. Speaking as a SJP (like an SJW, but Paladin) and as being in a relationship with a trans person, I am very in favour of not misgendering people, and if that were what the new CoC requires I would be applauding it. But it's not, and kicking out a respected moderator and shaming her with the media under her actual name, and resolutely ignoring all the long-term members who've made the SE sites into what they are... it's way beyond what I can support.
Oct 16, 2019 12:55
well, two of my main online communities are having big kerfuffles adversely affecting people I care about, so... Monday it is

Spent the whole day in server hall upgrading a PKI system. My head is full of noise.
Aug 25, 2019 17:43
All this is very near to Arlanda, the main airport for the Stockholm area. The authorities don't allow building houses near the airport because that inevitably ends with noise complaints. So the farms and the woods nearby are likely to stay the way they are, giving us a lot of lovely routes to go riding!
Aug 25, 2019 17:41
When we got out of the woods we were just a few hundred metres from the stable.
Aug 25, 2019 17:41
This is very good training for the horses, the climbing is good exercise for the muscles and the tricky ground means they need to be careful about where they place their hooves, which trains their balance. And mine - it's hard to sit well balanced on a horse that's moving around sideways and downhill!
Aug 25, 2019 17:40
The stable is attached to a farm, and there's forest nearby, so we can ride on the small gravel roads, or along the fields (there are paths where we are allowed to ride that won't harm the crops), or in the forest, or a mix. Today I went out with two friends. We started out on the road, then turned into the woods, then climbed a hill that's maybe 20m high and with a lot of undergrowth so the footing is a bit tricky.
Aug 23, 2019 15:11
I'm going to spend tonight sleeping - too old for Friday night partying... tomorrow mostly at home, and Sunday going horse riding. I'm planning on hacking (=riding out in nature instead of in a paddock) for at least an hour.
Aug 23, 2019 12:37
@yagmoth555 so no rest for you this weekend?

Q: What is a glue record?

LanceBaynes This is a Canonical Question about DNS glue records. What exactly (but briefly) is a DNS glue record? Why are they needed and how do they work?

Aug 10, 2019 18:55
I've had 5 weeks so I shouldn't complain. Though I did work a bit, but I could set my own pace and do most of it sitting in a chair on my porch so it wasn't exactly painful.
Aug 10, 2019 09:18
Tomorrow's the last day of my vacation. I think I want to be retired.
Jul 29, 2019 14:08
@peterh I lack about 30 reopen votes to get all 6. (And yes, I do occasionally vote for reopening!)
Jul 29, 2019 14:08
@peterh Yes I am, near Stockholm.
Jul 26, 2019 08:31
Didn't even go horse riding yesterday - would have been no fun for me or the horse
Jul 26, 2019 08:31
It's heading up towards 30°C here today again
Jul 26, 2019 08:30
Indeed. I'm doing a little work for a client, sitting in the shade on my porch.
Jul 24, 2019 16:57
And once helped him figure out the German text on the Austrian DNS registrar site so he could keep the domain "dotat.at".
Jul 24, 2019 16:56
@Hennes I confess to not getting that reference... I "met" Tony in Usenet some 25 years ago
Jul 22, 2019 19:05
But I don't want to go travelling every year. It gets tiring.
Jul 22, 2019 19:04
Usually me and my husband travel somewhere for a couple of weeks during the summer - last year we drove from Sweden to Scotland, the year before that we flew to Italy.
Jul 22, 2019 19:03
This year it's just relax, get some things fixed around the house. I've been having some health issues during the spring, and will have surgery to hopefully fix them for good sometime in late September/early October, so I want to just enjoy the peace and quiet at home now, take the time to go riding my horse a lot, to charge my batteries before the surgery.
Jul 22, 2019 15:55
I've just started my 3rd week of vacation. Two more after this one still to go.
Jul 22, 2019 12:01
@Hennes Do you know ftony or just follow him on Twitter?
Jul 20, 2019 14:46
I'm really happy with this one. I hope it'll keep as long as the last - 5 years until it starts feeling too sluggish is a good run for a laptop.
Jul 17, 2019 17:44
Including opening Firefox and getting all my tabs back
Jul 17, 2019 17:44
Also, the Migration thing is great - I just told the new computer to copy everything from the old one. It took a couple of hours due to using wifi instead of cable, but once it was done, everything just works
Jul 17, 2019 17:43
Todcay I finally got my new laptop! I em very much enjoying having several VMs chugging away in the background while working in several browser windows, and it does not keep freezing!
Jul 16, 2019 09:44
the question in question is workplace.stackexchange.com/q/140119/9164
Jul 16, 2019 09:44
@JourneymanGeek yeah, but if you then get asked "so you have no work experience" and you say "that's right, I've never worked", and they later find out that you did work for a couple of months, they're going to start wondering why you lied. Lying about stuff is a good way to get fired.
Jul 16, 2019 09:43
@Hennes I really don't get why I got that many upvotes on an answer that seems so obvious and selfevident
Jul 12, 2019 14:57
I just got told that my computer won't be ready until mid next week. I might be able to get a rebate though as they just released new models after I'd ordered but before it got delivered
Jul 9, 2019 05:17
It should be ready for pickup this week.
Jul 9, 2019 05:17
I'm waiting for my new Macbook Pro, which will be the most expensive laptop I've ever bought, even accounting for inflation and suchlike.

the second image one shows people in traditional dresses, basically only used in midsummer celebrations now

Jun 23, 2019 14:44
@yagmoth555 in Sweden we do those kinds of fires on April 30th. On midsummer we raise phallic symbols and dance around them, a bit like that scene in the original Wickerman.
Jun 16, 2019 10:51
hey, I get to play with my pet peeves and you don't have to join in :-)
Jun 16, 2019 10:34
@JourneymanGeek I'm trying to not use "google" as a generic term, I don't want them to be the default...
Jun 16, 2019 09:33
@YetAnotherRandomUser this is why I use duckduckgo instead...
Jun 16, 2019 09:33
@yagmoth555 grats in advance!
May 21, 2019 09:34
@window.document I'm doing some as well. Not many left now.

A gentleman's agreement only works if both parties behave like "gentlemen". Which your partner doesn't. This means it's time for the two of you to get down to brass tacks and put things into writing, before you stop being friendly.
