@james.garriss: No. Powerpoint slides are the death of understandable teaching. They lead to going too fast; they force a single rate of coverage without responding to what the class "gets" or doesn't get; they discourage responding to students' interest or confusion; they put everyone to sleep. When you are doing example problems, and ask the students what to do, what happens? "Oh, well that might work, but it's not what's on the slide so we'll ignore your input." That's horrible.

@Orbit: No, it's really not quibbling. "If the current rate keeps up for the next 30 years, then 25% of women will have had abortions" is a very different claim than "25% of women now have had abortions". And I believe the wording "not accurate" just means that the Solicitor General was not accurately conveying the claim made.

@OwenReynolds: No, based on the study it is not reasonable to make that conclusion. Most women alive today passed the main part of their reproductive lives much earlier than 2014, when the abortion rates were likely to have been significantly different. A different study would be needed to make that conclusion.

The causes of the super-seasons are clearly magical and tied to two locations: summer/heat/fire associated with the doom of Valyria, the smoking sea, and dragons; and winter associated with the Others and the far north beyond the Wall. There's a reason it's called "A Song of Ice and Fire": the causes of the super-seasons are the fundamental mystery behind the whole thing.

This is wrong. It's perfectly normal to say "floating on the water", and just saying "She's floating." would sound pretty strange, and more likely to be metaphorical (she's on cloud 9) or like she's floating mid-air (in the fizzy soda room, or the ISS...).

@RomanOdaisky: Perhaps you are not familiar with the US train system, or lack thereof. The only passenger train service in Ohio is from Cleveland or Cincinnati, which is probably a journey of several hours from where they are. The only time to board the train is at 3 am. The trip takes 35 hours and costs $156. Driving takes only 17 hours.

Heck, the US government of today couldn't duplicate a modern laptop.

Do you mean 21st century college students? If not, it seems weird to invoke a second historical population from the misty past for comparison. (Also, as krb said: I wouldn't bet on the college student.)

@emory: Satellite surveillance of the planet's surface is performed continuously by several parties. Landsat—with publicly available images—performs a complete coverage cycle every 18 days.

@Federico: No. "If" clauses usually use either the simple present ("If the British government does not follow through…"), if the condition is viewed as relatively likely, or the simple past (as in this question), if the condition is merely hypothetical.

@Michael: "Except"?

But obviously you can count grapes. And everything you say about "chicco" applies equally well to "slice". The point is that there is very little rhyme or reason to these things. As with prepositions in different languages, it's bootless to ask why.

Why are grapes uncountable in Italian?
