I understand working in your bedroom, but laptops are portable. You could put it in the kitchen or somewhere overnight.

A person can disagree with what someone said, and still want to read it, especially if people are claiming the words amount to insurrection.

Personally, my employer is very apologetic on the rare occasions they ask for my time after normal working hours.

Jan 3, 2020 23:17
What are they going to do if they do find you interviewing on a break? I'm thinking a company that scared of turnover is unlikely to fire you.

Sep 14, 2016 16:13
@Laiv, just because you can't modify it after you create it doesn't mean you can't customize it before you create it. You can make your query as dynamic as you want at runtime, then prepare it, then parameterize it.

Mar 18, 2015 18:31
@DVK, @CreationEdge, @Erica, I definitely see your points. I think this would be a great meta topic. You should know it was reopened by the community, not by a unilateral moderator decision.
Mar 18, 2015 18:22
@AE, There's nothing wrong with the improvements you made to your answer, just try to consolidate them into two or three edits if you can. That way the page doesn't get bumped unnecessarily, people are more likely to read your improvements in your preferred form because they don't come in multiple parts, and the system doesn't auto-flag.
Mar 18, 2015 15:48
@Erica I think these sorts of questions are uncomfortable, but important to have out there. It might seem a little crazy, but this is how some parents genuinely feel. I'm happy to provide a forum to shed a little light on the situation, even if it does cause a little chaos on the site for a while.
Mar 18, 2015 15:39
@DVK No @Beofett has some new work responsibilities that left him without time for the site.
Mar 14, 2015 04:32
@anongoodnurse Yep, I'm getting your pings. Have fun on your vacation. I had a good break and am ready to come back.
Feb 23, 2015 16:13
@anongoodnurse, @RoryAlsop good to have you on board. I'm a little burned out at the moment, so I'd like to take advantage of your new-mod energy and take a few weeks off. Let me know if that's going to be a problem.
Feb 13, 2015 14:38
@Beofett Okay, I undeleted and reopened as well. I didn't notice the snit angle. I'll send a mod message asking about his reasons.
Feb 13, 2015 13:57
@Beofett Because he asked, it was of a sensitive nature, and was drawing a lot of controversial answers. Having all three factors pushed it over the line for me. We can see if a stack exchange employee can disassociate it instead, if you prefer.
Dec 15, 2014 13:22
@RoryAlsop, I pinged Tim and didn't get a response yet. If I were him, I would do paternity leave through Christmas if I could. I just wish someone else would cover his duties while he was out. This site can get by with one mod under normal circumstances, but it's far from ideal.
Dec 15, 2014 13:15
Okay, @Beofett, looks like an inconvenient week for both of us. I'll make an effort to check in.
Dec 12, 2014 21:54
@Beofett I will be smartphone-only for the 20th to the 28th, so I probably won't be checking in very often, if at all. Will you be able to handle the Christmas trolls without me?
Nov 27, 2014 18:15
@RoryAlsop Make me work on Thanksgiving, why don't you? ;-) Thanks for the heads up.
Nov 21, 2014 17:56
@Joe They're all basically the same as far as kid appropriateness. R2-D2 is already fully constructed and employed in the Naboo Royal fleet in Phantom Menace. When Anakin is freed and leaves with the jedi, he leaves C3PO behind, who is built except for outer coverings.
Nov 20, 2014 17:42
@Joe I watched Star Wars with my kids when they were around that age with no problems. Just keep an eye on if it gets too much. I can't remember where I saw it, perhaps on one of the DVD special features, but there was a discussion about how scary the scene is for some kids where Jar-Jar's hand is stuck in the engine when Anakin is about to start the racing pod, and his "tongue is fat" so he can't call for help. Things we don't consider scary are often seen very differently by kids.

@medica That's probably a good question for moderators.stackexchange. Social acceptability isn't even close to a universal concept. That means you can't really tell if someone's trolling on the subject matter alone unless you know him well. Usually I go by the tone and try to give people the benefit of the doubt if I can't tell.
Nov 18, 2014 17:20
They're starting to ask about if we're interested in participating in Winter Bash this year. I don't see why not, but I thought I'd throw it out there. If you're not familiar with Winter Bash, they basically give out hats your avatar can wear for accomplishing various tasks. Here's the link from last year.

@medica I'm keeping an eye on that account. Usually a spammer would try again. It's not unheard of for parents to legitimately share links to sites they found helpful. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.
Nov 14, 2014 17:39
@medica No, I'm not going anywhere, for the moment at least.
Nov 14, 2014 17:38
@JeremyMiller I appreciate it.
Nov 6, 2014 15:31
@Beofett I was wondering why I suddenly started having more flags to handle.
Jul 3, 2014 17:40
In other words, if they want their child to be able to opt out of yoga, fine. If they want to force the entire school to opt out of yoga, I would have a problem with that.
Jul 3, 2014 17:39
@Ida I though that was funny too. My guess is if they were receiving religious instruction, the parents would be freaking out about that instead of yoga and vegetarian diets. Still, I support the rights of parents to freak out about whatever they want to freak out about, as long as it doesn't impact my children.
Jul 3, 2014 15:09
Here in the US it would be illegal for the government to force a child to attend a religious school not of his choosing. Our media is always telling us how much more secular Europe is than us. Interesting article.
Jul 3, 2014 15:04
I'm guessing the other schools are overcrowded and the Hindu school has excess capacity. Our school district had similar issues, which stuck my son in a sub-par school. That's one of the reasons we homeschool now.
Jul 3, 2014 15:02
Personally, I find the idea of appealing to the state for relief from the state to be a little ridiculous, but I'm one of those crazy liberty freaks who homeschools his kids.
Jul 3, 2014 15:00
Homeschooling is legal in the UK, with about 50,000 students going that route. I believe you also have private school options.
Jul 3, 2014 14:59
The article does mention an appeals process, but the UK does have compulsory education laws, so if you lose the appeal, you would be required to either attend the school you were assigned, or make private arrangements.
Jul 3, 2014 14:58
I thought this was interesting even though off topic, so wanted to discuss the topic in here.

Q: Child (4-11) does not get into any of their preferred schools - now what? (UK)

VictorySaberI've just been reading this article on the BBC 'No meat' Hindu school place offer 'outrages' parents and I am wondering what position are the parents left in, under UK law. Consider for example, like in the story, a child (let's say 4) doesn't get into any of their six preferred schools. Th...

Apr 22, 2014 16:37
@Beofett I asked in academia chat if it would be on topic there and so far the result seems to be "no." I'm okay with letting the community vote to close or not on this one.
Apr 21, 2014 20:07
@Beofett Thanks. I've deleted quite a few comments myself as flags have come up. I'll try to check back occasionally to make sure they don't spring up again.
Apr 15, 2014 12:30
@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun Sounds good.
Mar 28, 2014 12:38
Okay, I'll add a comment.

Q: Any road trip destinations near N. IL for 4 days with a 3 year old

buck54321I am trying to plan a road trip for 4 days at the end of September. It will just be me(dad) and my 3 year old daughter. We live in north-central Illinois, but am willing to travel anywhere within a few hundred miles. I would like to go to one or two places a day. She travels well and I will be pr...

Q: How can I avoid my girlfriend getting depressed over studies?

JorgeWell, I'm not exactly a "parent" but certainly I try to "educate" her about things I lived. (since we both live together and alone since young (18)). The fact is that she is 22, and is at a pre-university class that she has to pass in order to be able to start studying the career she chose. We ...

Cool. Thanks for the input guys.
Apr 21, 2014 15:58
@MichaelT Do you mean like RPC?
Apr 21, 2014 15:56
Makes sense. I can implement the backend part myself. I just didn't want to reinvent the wheel if I didn't have to.
Apr 21, 2014 15:53
I'm already planning to keep an open comet connection.
Apr 21, 2014 15:51
Most of what I've found only does the reactive part within the one page on the client.
Apr 21, 2014 15:51
Howdy. I have a question for the web developers in the room. Anyone know of a reactive framework that goes all the way up the stack. For example, I check a checkbox, it notifies the backend, which stores the value in the database and transmits the new value to all clients which are displaying that checkbox, and those clients automatically check that checkbox.
