A place to talk with friends from the EE community about vacuu...
May 5, 2013 16:31
@jippie How so?
May 5, 2013 16:27
I'm having a bit of a disagreement with a friend, hopefully one of you could clarify?

1 = On
0 = Off

Now does On represent an Open or a Closed circuit?

Mar 3, 2012 18:32
I suppose you just cannot handle my superiority in the art of the debate, eh?
Mar 3, 2012 18:28
Ah I love the sweet smell of success.
Mar 3, 2012 18:23
In case you do not understand, I am referring to your hostile reaction to the user known as "Dave" asking you about your statement in which you referred to him as a troll.
Mar 3, 2012 18:22
Well perhaps you should reread that sentence. I never said you misquoted a soul. Rather I said you take situations out of context and then imply someone else is to blame.
Mar 3, 2012 18:21
You seem to have done so for the past hour?
Mar 3, 2012 18:21
Really?
Mar 3, 2012 18:21
Accuse? Hell, you've got it done in text for the whole world to see.
Mar 3, 2012 18:20
I'll have what he's having.
Mar 3, 2012 18:20
You're just too good at taking things out of context and then insinuating it is the other who is at fault. Have you considered running for political office?
Mar 3, 2012 18:19
I dare say I have a rather new and modern dictionary.
Mar 3, 2012 18:18
Also, if you have some inherent problem with the site, perhaps you should just not participate.
Mar 3, 2012 18:18
My dictionary does not specify that to be the case.
Mar 3, 2012 18:16
@Marcin Indeed I do: "Having or showing a lack of thought or intelligence;"
Mar 3, 2012 18:12
@Marcin Do you understand the definition of "vacuous"?
Mar 3, 2012 18:12
@Marcin It is by no means a perfect system, but it is the best we've got. Meta exists for discussion of such things so that we may improve the site. Now I seriously urge you to take your issues to Meta if you wish to discuss them further and perhaps see some action.
Mar 3, 2012 18:12
@Marcin Now your just going off and insulting my intelligence. I do not appreciate that. I'm trying to be civil here, but you seem to have a problem greater than the closing of this question. Meta exists for issues with the site, which is why we say ask there. The comments of a question are intended for the discussion of the contents of the question for purposes such as clarification and not an extensive discussion of the issues with the site it exits on.
Mar 3, 2012 18:12
@Marcin No he did not. This is something that has been decided on by the community as a whole. This site is community oriented and run by the community. This issue has had much discussion and a general consensus has been reached that questions of this sort are not on-topic. Again, if you feel otherwise feel free to bring it up on Meta.
Mar 3, 2012 18:12
@Marcin Four non-moderators voted to close this question with Thomas Owens making the 5th and closing vote. If he hadn't, I would have myself. As for the "identical organisations, with identical attitudes to education?" piece, you cannot make blanket generalizations that all industries have different views. Different companies in any industry will differ in their culture but I digress, this is clearly off-topic as per the FAQ and communities opinion on the matter.
Mar 3, 2012 18:12
@Marcin There is a difference between career advice for a programmer and career advice for programmers. This question involved software development, but you could just as easily switch it out for anthropology or chemistry and it would be the same question.

Jan 31, 2012 23:04
Have a good evening everybody (and a good morning Yannis?)
Jan 31, 2012 23:00
@RebeccaChernoff Programmers is a great site and a great addition to the SE network. There is a problem with inconsistency and difference of opinions, but we can work to fix it by being more active in the process either as a user or moderator.
Jan 31, 2012 22:57
@RobertHarvey My only experience with migration has been on a "vote to close & migrate manner", so not to any real extent.
Jan 31, 2012 22:56
@Gilles I honestly don't feel I can offer my opinion on that matter as I haven't concurrently spent significant time on Programmers and SO. I also did not engage on SO in a serious manner before Programmers came about so I can't offer a true opinion on any changes.
Jan 31, 2012 22:54
@kiamlaluno I think that participating on the meta for a site will help get a better understanding of how Stack Exchange operates, as well as the particular "branch" of the network.
Jan 31, 2012 22:52
@Jarrod I suppose that would be a tough one on my part considering my young age and relative lack of experience in the industry. I think that largely, I can tell what is and what is not related to the world of programmers, but some times I will just have to step back and look into something if I am not sure of something or knowledgeable on the matter.
Jan 31, 2012 22:50
@AnnaLear Again I'm not sure what facilities moderators are provided to communicate with users, but I would do my best to explain my reasoning for my decision and do my best to answer questions or issues the user has with my decision.
Jan 31, 2012 22:49
@MarkTrapp A desire to become more active in something that I consider to be a great part of the internet. I've learned a good bit from this site and continue to offer what I can when I can
Jan 31, 2012 22:42
@SteveJackson A better understanding of what is on-topic throughout the entire site is a must and needs work.
Jan 31, 2012 22:41
@AnnaLear I think being a monitor warrants an active communication between other members of the site and moderators. That said being available in-chat is a must.
Jan 31, 2012 22:39
@MarkTrapp I think the current moderation team has done a fine job and will continue to do so. I personally don't agree on the level of closing questions that are on the margin, but I don't see that being a conflict.
Jan 31, 2012 22:36
@kiamlaluno I think one of the most important things is deciding what constitutes on-topic and what is not, which a user can do with 3.000 reputation.
Jan 31, 2012 22:30
@Jarrod I can dedicate an hour or so in the morning, and mid-day. The evening allows for more time as well. I feel at least 2-3 hours would be a good amount for both moderation and participation in general.
Jan 31, 2012 22:27
@MarkTrapp I do see flagging and meta as important. Regarding flagging, unless I saw something that was truly inappropriate, I used my "vote to close" option. Meta is what plays a role in how the site is run which I feel is more important. As for my low count on the matter, that is simply my lack of formal involvement (I've tended to lurk in the past) but regardless of the outcome of the election, I intend to become much more involved in Programmers overall.
Jan 31, 2012 22:23
@BlackJack I'm not sure what the exact facilities are, but if after explaining to the user (and making sure they understand the situation) I would have to perform a temporary ban in some form.
Jan 31, 2012 22:17
@MarkTrapp The moderator should ideally be both a user and a "janitor". Any site needs some level of cleaning up, but should also be involved in promotion of the site which is just as important as cleaning in maintaining and cultivating a good community.
Jan 31, 2012 22:13
@RobertHarvey As I mentioned in my "speech" on the election page, I will moderate moderately, taking action where only definitively necessary.
Jan 31, 2012 22:11
@BlackJack Lead by example. Additionally, I think have providing clear direction on the objectives of a cleanup will help encourage new participants who may not be sure of what the proper actions are.
Jan 31, 2012 22:09
@AnnaLear It depends on just how far. If it is total mismatch for the site, I would be inclined to close/migrate/delete depending on the context. If it is a "fringe" question, I say let the community be the judge on that one.
Jan 31, 2012 22:07
@ChrisF I would have to say I'd vote less often (to close that is) because of the binding vote.
Jan 31, 2012 22:06
@AnnaLear I just feel that there is not a true consensus on where the line is drawn in the sand. There are guidelines, and they are largely fine, but it seems as though what one may consider fine another considers off-topic is not certain.
Jan 31, 2012 22:03
@MarkTrapp Generally, we're in the right direction. I just think we need a bit of refinement in what qualifies as on or off topic.
Jan 31, 2012 22:00
Sorry, I'm still at work and up to my neck in Hudson configs.
Jan 31, 2012 21:58
you're
Jan 31, 2012 21:58
@WorldEngineer I think your missing a few digits there at the end.

Nov 24, 2011 13:51
@perlj Just try searching for several variants of your question's title. It may take 10-20 minutes to effectively search, but you will avoid the duplicate question.
Nov 24, 2011 03:27
@perlj Have you tried searching for a question of that nature first?
Nov 7, 2011 13:11
@ThorbjørnRavnAndersen I think working with a 6502 for years might have skewed my idea of performance just a bit.
Nov 7, 2011 12:13
@ThorbjørnRavnAndersen Really? I've got to look into that one.
