I like this answer - I just wanted to add that I/O utilisation would have been a concern as well as the CPU usage.

For example - if you want them to review specifications against broader company objectives then is that expectation included in the job description? If you are asking them to do X and then complain they aren't also doing Y, it's going to be a cultural difference.

Have you considered that this employee may be part of a "quiet quitting" movement, where employees do just the job they are hired to do. Younger employees have seen that what passes for going "above and beyond" as a norm is rarely rewarded.

+1 to this. I'd never heard of nohello and assuming I had seen it on a slack status I'd still never even consider looking at it. For all I know/care it could be goatse. I'd certainly have a red-flag on any dev who thinks they're that much of a rockstar programmer or so busy/important that everyone else should have to change their behaviour to fit them, or that their concentration is going to be broken for 15-30 minutes by a friendly greeting. In fact I've met devs who genuinely are worthy of Rockstar status, they tend to be the most personable and open.

@ewwhite - in a technical context you could define what aspect of performance you are addressing. Terms related to speed, efficiency, resource usage and responsiveness.

This is a great answer. I would add that, even a couple of days later, that the incident is still clearly concerning the OP. As a result they should report the creep's actions to both the police and the club/pool to protect themselves from future unwanted attention, but also others because the guy has probably done it before. There is absolutely no reason why they should have to be having to prepare for or be constantly on-guard to be dealing with such a situation from this person in the future when they're just going to enjoy a bit of swim/sauna time.

As an addendum to this excellent answer - racism is also used as a more accessible replacement for xenophobia. Something which lies at the very core of most nationalist organisations.

At the moment I'm inclined to vote to close this question as 'primarily opinion based'. Please tell us what you've found and what conflicting information you'd like to resolve. More information about your situation may also be useful such as family makeup, country, cultural/religious background if appropriate.

No answers beyond "don't use the method any more, as it shown to be ineffective and evidence x,y, and z all indicate is likely to be harmful" are going to be evidence-based - they can only be opinion based.
Feb 16, 2017 00:25
The evidence base is clear on the matter and is also in evidence in the question posed as the elder child sees it as an easy way out.
Feb 16, 2017 00:25
As per the questions with an unacceptable premise meta discussion, the first point in the most popular response is "disagreement over an objective, verifiable fact."
Feb 16, 2017 00:24
This question should be closed as 'primarily opinion based' and I have voted for that to happen.

have a search for twinkle twinkle little rockstar, they've done some lullaby style covers of various rock songs, also an ace cover of the imperial march from Star Wars (youtube.com/watch?v=ExZLubNF78A) if that's you're kind of thing. :)

parenting.stackexchange.com/questions/27439/… asked about some music sources/ideas... I have a few tracks on my Deezer account (like Spotify) which you might like, they're not exact matches but will get you started

@AJHenderson - I know you from photography.SE, right?

also if a child gets placed and the parents really don't like it (irrespective of if it's a school they chose or not) then there is a transfer process. so you might have to wait for a space to become available but often a suitable (if not ideal) placement can be found.
Jul 3, 2014 18:46
in many authorities when they assign children to schools they don't know who they are, it's anonymised so it's quite hard to cheat it. The easiest thing to do is move next door to the school (and I know parents who've done that).
Jul 3, 2014 18:44
Not really as again it's done by the local authority who do it on a set of predefined criteria (fostering/adoptive children, siblings, distance, religious requirements etc) which are evidence based. To get into a situation where you list 6 schools and get none of them is exceptionally rare (and hence newsworthy)
Jul 3, 2014 18:39
Yes Ida, school places are strictly limited as there is a maximum class size of 30 children unless there are very exceptional circumstances (and that is up to the discretion of the local authority and not the school). So getting into the state school that is best for your child is by no means a given.
Jul 3, 2014 18:16
That's true Ida, but if they're that bothered about it then it's up to them to determine their priorities. Also even if they have to take their child to that school there are ways to transfer after the child has started if there is a serious problem (which religious considerations would count).
Jul 3, 2014 18:08
The religious instruction thing is a bit of a grey area since although they can be a religious school, the religious instruction and activities they can provide are quite limited since most of the curriculum is mandated at a state level.
Jul 3, 2014 18:03
Going back to the question - Karl is right that there is an appeals process here but there are various options for appeals and ultimately although they don't like it, you can homeschool.

@HenryVarro - I can't speak for the US but here in the UK many of the role models that soccer provides are hardly shining examples of humanity - they're certainly not people I'd want my 9-year-old idolising. Aside from a bit of running about it really doesn't bring much of lasting value at all.

and that maybe what I've seen is not normal for 99.999% of the excel using world
Oct 28, 2014 19:53
You (and Eric) are right that it probably isn't necessary and to only do it if you have problems. Sometimes I forget that I've seen some of the office products pushed way beyond their limits
Oct 28, 2014 19:50
I'd like to think they've sorted it now, as I left just as 2007 was about to hit the streets
Oct 28, 2014 19:49
so it just grew... and grew until it went pop.
Oct 28, 2014 19:49
which never quite got the job done before more work came in
Oct 28, 2014 19:48
If my memory serves me right, the situation was that objects to be cleared were not done so on the End Sub, they were just left hanging for a kind of garbage collector
Oct 28, 2014 19:47
one example I had was working on live data from a stream and they literally wanted recalc every 3 seconds
Oct 28, 2014 19:47
Only if you don't need them
Oct 28, 2014 19:46
yes, and constant recalcs
Oct 28, 2014 19:45
But I have seen a few issues with heavily used sheets where not clearing even relatively common objects causes issues. I did have a quick read of Eric's article
Oct 28, 2014 19:44
I can't really talk about specifics as I'm under NDA and for completeness I should say I left a few years ago.
Oct 28, 2014 19:43
fair enough :)
Oct 28, 2014 19:43
I'm of course full of BS as you put it :)
