Fri 17:13
I should add - as a Military nerd, I do like the premise of this question - but it needs a lot more work for it to be answerable.
Fri 17:13
@RobertRapplean - The more an Explosion is constrained, the more powerful it is. You also mentioned that this Aircraft carrier has limitless size, which has a bearing. The other reason why location is important is that some things don't react well to explosions (say for example - the Jet Fuel tanks or Weapons Magazines) and other areas have lots of pipes (which could propagate the blast wave to unintended places - like what happened with the sinking of the Kursk)
Fri 17:13
IMO, this is too vague to be answerable. There are too many variables that would have significant effects. Such as the Material used, even we assume Steel, when you say 'Internal layout similar to an Aircraft carrier' - there is a world of difference between the Hangar Deck (which has open access to the atmosphere and relatively large space) and say the Engineering room or the berthing area.

I vote to reopen. Yes, this is a serious topic, with the most serious of consequences. That said, there is still a good question here about Desperation and Interview technique. I agree that OP needs proper mental help to deal with the Suicidal ideation, We can still assist on the Workplace issue.

Jul 1 06:36
I want to add - the last time I dipped my toes in the Job Market - was 2 years ago. I think I sent out 30-40 applications, had around15 phone interviews, 10 proper interviews, 4 follow-up interviews and ended up with 2 job offers. Yes, there are ghost jobs and other trickery happening - but my experience is that if you have skills that are valuable and you present your CV well and follow-up with a call to the recruiter (after a bit of digging) - your chance of success is much higher.

Jun 30 23:00
TL;DR - it is right to refer this person to professional help, there is no inconsistency :)
Jun 30 22:59
I, personally, have given answers whereby I have pointed out that the OP does not have a 'Workplace' problem, but has a Mental Health problem and suggest they consult with a professional. Just the same way I would with a Legal question - where it is firmly in the realm of the obvious. For this one, whilst it is firmly in the realm of the obvious, it is of such a serious nature that it requires professional help, which we cannot give. We can only help with the Workplace component
Jun 30 22:57
The more a situation deviates from the realm of 'very clearly legal/not legal' and more into the realm of 'it depends' the more hesitant we are to answer and the more likely we are to either VTC for legal reasons or give a 'This sounds right/wrong - but you need to talk with a Lawyer' answers. The same goes for Mental Health.
Jun 30 22:52
Which means often some concepts are very similar between AU, NZ, UK, US, Canadar etc. When there is a well-understood concept, we will generally answer - e.g. "My Manager squeezed my Bum, is this Sexual Harrassement?" - in almost all jurisdictions and almost all scenarios - the answer is "Yes" - so we would confidently answer "IANAL, but yeah, this sounds like harrassement"
Jun 30 22:50
I just want to add some nuane here - I have written many an answer that starts with 'IANAL' (because I am not) - However, I have been involved in Mediation and litigation at my company and have been rather successful in those regards. To that end, I have a fairly good grasp of major bits of legislation in my country. So I can quote the FTA, CGA, Various Employment Law and even a bit of Contract Law. I also know that a lot of the Anglosphere Law has a common ancestor in English Common Law.

Jun 26 04:52
@user721108 - This is the correct answer.

@L.Dutch And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence. Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again.

@gaazkam - Part 2: That is to say - if you want Immortal perfect beings, a few steps removed from God - Then Tolkein esque Elves are the way to go (although the Curse of Feanor would go a long way to saying Elves were 'Wise') - if you want a story about the cultural stagnation - then make them stuck in their ways, unable to adapte and eventually overtaken by other races.
Apr 23 03:45
@gaazkam - I am tempted to VTC this question - and here is why: You have correctly articulated a potential problem... Now it is up to you, the World Builder to decide how you want to address it, in relation to your story - Or to put another way - WH40K Eldar are the way they are because it helps GW's goal of selling small plastic figures for a tabletop war game. Tolkein's Elves were the way they were because of the role they had in his Legendarium. Part 1

@Caleth - Investigated... By the Police. Prosecuted... by the Courts. $100,000 is the average cost in legal fees for a Self-Defense case that goes before the courts. Firstly, you have to qualify for a Public Defender - and you most likely wouldn't and secondly - in some cases, you have to pay some or all of the fees. So I ask you again - Would you be happy to pay the state $100K for something that was clearly justified?
Apr 11 09:53
@Caleth - okay, assume for the moment you are attacked in your home, with your children in the house by an assailant with a knife, you kill them. Quintessential self-defense. Would you be happy with being forced by the State to pay at a minimum $100,000?
Apr 10 21:43
@Caleth - Again, in the video - he did not point the rifle at anyone until they attempted to assault him - Carrying a Firearm is not an inherently aggressive act. What you are suggesting is that you should be charged with a crime, even if there is clear video evidence you did nothing wrong... just so that the evidence can be evaluated.
Apr 9 19:07
@Caleth - except all the Video evidence that showed in each instance he was not the aggressor and shot in self defense after he was attacked.
Apr 9 19:06
@JimCullen - No, he did not. He went with a first aid kit to help people (we have video of him doing this) with a lawfully open-carried Firearm for protection. We have the video of when Rosenbaum attacked him, he tried to defuse the situation, attempted to retreat (FYI - He had no legal obligation to) and only shot when he was attacked in each instance
Apr 9 08:43
@JimCullen - we had the video evidence. It was quintessential self defense. Kyle was attacked in thr initial encounter, attempted to retreat before Rosenbaum attacked him and was shot for it. He was then attacked by Huber with a Skateboard (lethal force) and finally shot Grosekreutz when he pulled a Glock on him. At no point was Kyle the Aggressor. It was a malicious prosecution brought on by political pressure.
Apr 9 08:43
@Seff27 - I used it specifically to make the point. Your reaction is the reason why.
Apr 9 08:43
@DewiMorgan - Desire would definitely fall under Ill-intent. Need - that gets more interesting - but most Theft is not someone starving to death stealing a loaf of Bread. Murder requires ill-intent because you are still killing someone, Hitler or not. However, Negligence and Ignorance - there is a lot of room for Manslaughter.

Jan 22 20:16
Question: Are we allowed to have multiple sentient Civilizations... that died out - Whether by natural means or unnatural - or must it be only 2 ever. Also, are we allowed non-sentient life?

Jan 14 05:18
@MontyWild - I get the whole copy of a copy element - the problem is that the Memory and experience of Person 2 are not a Copy, that is new data. so when that is copied, you would not have the same error rate (due to compounding errors) from the memories of Person 1 - So if you could confirm on this point - cause otherwise yeah - it breaks a whole bunch of things.
Jan 14 05:18
Question - how much of their past life and to what detail to they end up remembering - e.g. is just vague recollections or are they going to remember passwords, account numbers etc.

Jan 6 19:13
@IMP9024 - Question: How disciplined or trained are the Triceratops in your story, without their mounted riders. Will they continue the charge or will they abandon it - because that answer will dictate a number of effective strategies.

Jan 3 08:27
I am clocking off SE for the evening - some other WBers may read the exchange and chime in.
Jan 3 08:24
Or to use another classic Movie line - from Predator: If it Bleeds, we can kill it. When I think of a weapons system for a world building answer, I am not designing it down to the point of knowing which materials are needed for which components - unless there is a good world building reason for that to be known. Sometimes World Building requires restraint - allow the user to fill the space with their own imagination.
Jan 3 08:21
To give a classic example: youtube.com/watch?v=YWyCCJ6B2WE - The characters are terrified of the Great and Powerful Oz, until they realize he is just a man. The Audience does not need to know how the machine he is using works - only that it is a machine and not magic
Jan 3 08:19
I see your reasoning - but from a narrative perspective - once the Character figures out that it is just a machine and utilizing the known 4 materials - does there need to be a detailed explanation to the rest of the characters - or is the fact that we know that it is no longer divine, sufficient to advance the story?
Jan 3 07:58
So, firstly - feel free to look at my Answers on my stats page - you will notice I have a penchent for Weaponary, Military stuff etc. Why do you need to design it - Are you looking to publish an in-depth set of schematics, is there a story reason why the characters might need to know exactly how it works etc.
Jan 3 07:54
I am with you so far - now onto the Plasma Cannon - From a World Building perspective - which is stopping you from saying that it is made possible by the unique properties of your 4 materials. What world building problem do you need to solve by having the exact ratio or composition known.
Jan 3 07:50
Okay - so that, right there, would be really good info to put into the question.
Jan 3 07:48
Sup
Jan 3 07:44
@IMP9024 - Cool- you say only these 4 exist... WHY - what is world building reason that only these exist? We are happy to assist within the confines of your world... But to do so requires more effort on your part. L.Dutch's initial comment is still very relavent. Why is it that simply saying that your weapon uses those 4 materials is not sufficient... To Re-Iterate: If you need us to work within these confines, we need more context on your part as to why
Jan 3 07:44
@IMP9024 - No, there really isnt. Once you use a Magic Material, you are no longer bound by realistic properties. Why is it that you need to use multiple materials, when one would suffice. Unless there is a reason why in your world only these 4 magic materials exist - but you haven't given any context or reason. I appreciate the edits to deal with 3rd party universes, but as it stands - I am not seeing a question that has any other answer than It works, because I say it does.
Jan 3 07:44
@IMP9024 - I am almost certain to VTC this question - firstly, we don't answer questions about other already built worlds - you mentioned Godzilla and Vibranium, which are both from other fictional universes. Secondly, you are already using hand-waive materials, AKA Magic - in which case the answer is 'It works because I say it does'

Dec 6, 2024 17:17
VTC - Brainstorming questions aren't appropriate for this site.

Nov 1, 2024 19:51
As is, VTC - needs way more work to be a world building question.

Sep 24, 2024 06:10
@JBH - Yeah - but after checking out Physics SE, I have changed my mind.
Sep 24, 2024 06:10
@JBH - it is a bit outside my wheelhouse. Truth be told, I am kinda interested to see the answers and the reasoning. But yeah - not my strongsuit.
Sep 24, 2024 06:10
@JBH I hear your point - but some of my favorite questions and answers have involved liberal usage of Back-of-the-envelope Maths. I dunno, I like this question so I am championing it :D
Sep 24, 2024 06:10
@JBH - I think a reasonable estimate, with solid reasoning does not fall afoul of Opinion Based in the strict sense.
Sep 24, 2024 06:10
@EdTate - Interesting. I am feeling argumentative, so I went over to Physics and had a look - I see their rules around Homework questions, I can see their reasoning, IMO though - this doesnt fall into that category - so we will see what happens.
Sep 24, 2024 06:10
VTC: Since this wants the number for Earth as it stands currently, this is not a World Building question, this is a Physics question - and should be moved (with an Edit) to the Physics SE.

Sep 17, 2024 08:13
@ohno Something isn't smelling right with this. If you'll excuse my tin-foil hat, they may be trying to either force you to leave or building a case to get rid of you.

Sep 12, 2024 18:31
I think this question would have a better chance of being asked on the WarThunder forums..

Sep 3, 2024 18:53
Mythologized. In most cases it was due to a last resort effort. If you exclude the Soviet WW2 tank, sniper and Flying units, then there is almost no successful all-female military units. The issue is one of Ratios - for every woman that has the capacity for Violence, there's already 100 men.
Sep 3, 2024 18:47
@Trioxidane oh no, Afghanistan is a perfect example, because cultural factors or not, the Women decided not to fight back. Historical examples of Women fighting are both rare and extremely mythologies
Sep 3, 2024 18:43
@Dmyt - Slavery was not ended with Technology. The Transatlantic slave trade was ended on principle. Unfortunately today there are more Slaves in existence than before.
