Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?

My application is the BASIC Stamp 2 Editor from Parallax. I have the old version of the Board Of Education with a serial port instead of USB, but a USB to serial adapter that has proven to work on Windows.

Q: Application under Wine cannot access any serial ports?

larsksI'm trying to run this program under Wine (that's programming software for a Kenwood TM-V71 radio). The software installs and runs without a problem, but when it comes time to select a serial port everything is greyed out: Wine autodetects all the serial ports just fine: $ ls -l $WINEPREFIX/dosd...

I see a question posted about eight months ago with the same problem. In his case, he was trying to program a radio, in my case, I’m trying to program a micro controller, but we went through the same steps and came to the same conclusion.

@Criggie a request for suggestions, but I didn’t put in a lot of effort because I was trying to gauge the room.

Having trouble accessing serial ports with Wine.

PTL, it worked! Add this as an answer (please explain what goes on though), and I’ll mark it as correct.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
Right. I’ll try the second one.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@roamia tried it, the session died and disappeared before I could reattach.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
Worthy of note, Plarium Play and even Mech Arena are free.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@roaima I have no previous experience with the screen command. I'll try again and do that in a moment.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@roaima Hang on, back to your first suggestion, I tried binary 2>&1 /dev/null, but that isn't quite what you wrote. Is it what you meant, or should I try again with binary > /dev/null 2>&1?
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@roaima the screen command exited immediately with no output or apparent effect.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@waltinator That gave me a large file I do not understand. What am I looking for?
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@roaima I tried 2>&1, and it actually made the desktop file not work at all. Will try screen...
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@waltinator I will try that.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@roaima pretty sure I tried that, and it didn’t work. Am currently using ‘binary > /dev/null’ with said effects. Will try the other again.
Jul 7, 2023 17:18
@NicolasFormichella I thought of that too. It didn’t work.

@NightmareWolf OK, so it’s probably not saving the blend file. Why are you trying to do this, exactly?
May 15, 2022 20:39
@NightmareWolf I ask because I’m wondering if there’s another way to do this, since after some brief searching it doesn’t look like a saving option is immediately implemented. You can however try to find the python operator for saving a project file.
May 15, 2022 20:39
OK, I’ll get to testing it myself and hopefully find a solution.
May 15, 2022 20:39
try maybe: blender -b myfile.blend --python-expr bpy.ops.mesh.primitive_cube_add()
May 15, 2022 20:39
@NightmareWolf I would actually not use that option, since I’m not sure how to enable scripts for auto execution off the bat. I would put the script as a text block in the blend project, and then run it with —python-text MyScriptName
May 15, 2022 20:39
@NightmareWolf You can add cubes with python, you can run a python script in blender from the system command line. Will that do what you need?
May 15, 2022 20:39
@NightmareWolf you obviously didn’t understand what I’m trying to say: If you don’t intend to open an operating system, that basically means you don’t intend to use a computer. I mean, are you saying you want to launch Blender from “windows power shell“ or “command prompt” or “LXterminal“ or whatever the Apple command line thing is?
May 15, 2022 20:39
@NightmareWolf Are you referring to opening an operating system terminal, running blender in console mode (blender -b), and running a python script of the blend file (—python-text render_anim_split)?

I remember that tutorial. Off the top of my head, all I can say right now is double check it. Chances are, you skipped a step.

Jun 13, 2021 18:31
Nvm. Bye!
Jun 13, 2021 18:21
Off-topic question: does three look massively different from two? Because I always thought 2.80 should’ve been three.
Jun 13, 2021 18:07
So… I guess just wait for 3 to come out.
Jun 13, 2021 18:06
Ok, that’s probably a bug, then.
Jun 13, 2021 18:04
Blender 2.93.0, Windows 10 Home 64 bit.
Jun 13, 2021 18:03
Not for me.
Jun 13, 2021 18:01
I didn’t do the donut tutorial either. I just discovered object-render particles by hearing about it,
Jun 13, 2021 18:00
The particles do not rotate with the cube. They stick to it in the right positions, but they rotate like compass needles. If this is supposed to happen, then object-render particles are almost useless in animation.
Jun 13, 2021 17:59
Okay…
Jun 13, 2021 17:57
If I cannot rotate the cube in object mode without applying it, I cannot animate its rotation (except with animall)
Jun 13, 2021 17:56
But… that means that the donut in tutorial cannot be animated.
Jun 13, 2021 17:51
The particles have a compass effect, but it’s more about up-and-down than north and south.
Jun 13, 2021 17:48
… That shouldn’t have any effect on animation, should it?
Jun 13, 2021 17:48
Snapping… oh yeah. Transform snapping.
Jun 13, 2021 17:48
Yes, I put the driver there on purpose, so you could just press play and see what I mean.
Jun 13, 2021 17:47
@Chris I edited again.
Jun 13, 2021 17:47
@Chris there, I think.
Jun 13, 2021 17:47
@Chris I will if I need to. Let me see if I can reproduce from defaults.

Jun 9, 2021 15:40
The answer is updated. This file is tried and tested, and it does work. Sorry I provided an answer that I hadn’t tested myself. 😕
Jun 9, 2021 14:26
I don’t know how to initialize chat yet, so that something I need to learn. Meanwhile, I will work on re-creating blend file and node set up. I did have to reconnect all the nodes after creating the same material slots and assigning the same materials for the two objects.
Jun 9, 2021 14:05
@hellocatfood OK, confirmed, for whatever reason it doesn’t work unless both objects have the same material slots.
Jun 9, 2021 14:05
@hellocatfood huh. I tried it out and you’re right: it didn’t work. Pretty sure it should, though. Maybe this is a bug?
Jun 9, 2021 14:05
@hellocatfood wait a minute… There it went! OK, that is a bug. I have the same node setup as before (although I did add material slots with the same materials for both objects), but something refreshed, and now it’s working.
