@Jay Your tests sound reasonable and worth considering. I'd rather have rounded women who happen not to interact (Black Widow, Gamora, Shuri) than cardboard women who have a long conversation about their manicures and then get fridged to provide manpain which kicks off the plot. The second example may pass the Bechdel test, but it's not a story I'm interested in.

@jay If there are so few scenes between two women that a specific scene has to be parsed to figure out "are they talking about the men, or the job the men are doing?" then it's likely that work has failed. It's simply not that complicated. Are two named women talking about something (a hobby, politics, religion, cooking, cats, their phones, their kids, Girl Scouts, the linoleum) that does. not. involve. a. male. character? And again: passing or failing doesn't make the work GOOD. It doesn't even make the FEMALE CHARACTERS good. It's just an analytical lens.

@jay if two female characters are lawyers and discuss how to get their client acquitted, and the client is a man, and if the client were female no plot points would change, I would not consider the client's gender to be relevant. I would say that exchange passes the test in spirit. But I think Amadeus is right: It's not about carefully parsing pronouns. It's about an entire attitude towards gender and stereotypes.

@Rasdashan and don't be heterocentric or cis-centric either — "wife" doesn't require "husband." She could be married to another woman. Or someone genderfluid, nonbinary, or agender.

@LateralTerminal AUGH! really? I didn't know 101 was still burned into the zeitgeist like that. damn. what's an entry-level class called in British schools?
Feb 21, 2018 18:28
okay I really have to go now, but this was a good discussion. I hope the proposal succeeds :)

older pyrex is great
Feb 21, 2018 18:23
it used to be, but i think they were purchased by another company which cheapened the ingredient mix
Feb 21, 2018 18:23
the newer pyrex can shatter in your oven too, which is bullshit
Feb 21, 2018 18:22

Feb 21, 2018 18:20

Feb 21, 2018 18:14
how do you not have food spill when you're going to blend it?
Feb 21, 2018 18:13
it looks like Tom Servo
Feb 21, 2018 18:13
what the fuck even is that
Feb 21, 2018 18:10
dude, have you ever blended hot soup with a loose lid? sure-fire route to getting your face scalded
Feb 21, 2018 18:09
always keep the lid on, particularly when blending hot liquids like soup
Feb 21, 2018 18:07
but good start!
Feb 21, 2018 18:06
I'll post an enthusiastic yes later on today; I'm really supposed to be working now :P
Feb 21, 2018 18:05
edited a skosh, still reading...
Feb 21, 2018 18:02
If we don't call it GD101, we could call it Scott Stack Exchange, since he can pretty much answer every single question by himself :D
Feb 21, 2018 18:00
I wonder if that will affect our site stats, for questions answered/closed/etc.
Feb 21, 2018 17:59
Now I want a "noob" flag so I can go down the list: noob noob noob noob noob noob :D
Feb 21, 2018 17:58
it really ain't hard to pick them out. throw a bunch of darts and you'll hit them
Feb 21, 2018 17:56
to quote Steve Trevor's grandfather, we can do something, or nothing, and we've already tried nothing
Feb 21, 2018 17:55
that's fine; debates might draw superusers like Yisela back in
Feb 21, 2018 17:55
I just want to get the vast majority of the My Adobe Be Broke and Tutorial on Demand questions off our front page
Feb 21, 2018 17:54
I'm sure there will be many spirited debates about borderline cases, but that's okay
Feb 21, 2018 17:54
the community, obvs
Feb 21, 2018 17:53
we apparently will need more discussion on the scope, though, since WELZ is seeing it as just tutorials and I'm looking at all noob stuff
Feb 21, 2018 17:52
less mean than "Beginners," probably
Feb 21, 2018 17:52
but it doesn't hurt to invite other suggestions
Feb 21, 2018 17:52
I think GD101 is pretty solid
