This meaning of "retire" is also seen in the traditional UK firework safety instructions: "Light the blue touchpaper and retire to a safe distance"

Google is likely summarising the wikipedia article on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garbage_collection_(computer_science) , which in turn cites a 1960 paper by McCarthy. I can't guess which video is being referred to, though. @NeilMeyer, could you share a link or reference with us?

"all the processors stuck in anything from Furbys to CNC machinery"... Now I'm thinking about CNC machines being operated by Furbys. :)

I was watching the 1982 film Tron last night: it makes frequent reference to the users (as distinct from the programs written by the users).

"CUTS is Kansas City": I got the impression that they differed in their acceptance of the 1200 baud option, but the related question you linked to says they both recognised it.

@SteveSmith The "crash" was in N.A. consoles, but I'm interested in the effect on the global video game market as a whole. As some answers have pointed out, the prevalence of home computers in Europe meant that video consoles were less important there, and the "micros" seem to have carried on regardless. I'm not limiting this to Europe, however, and am interested in effects anywhere outside North America. One could argue, for example, that the US/EU NES is a result of the Video Game crash; if there had been no crash then (Japanese) Nintendo may well have just shipped the Famicom worldwide.
