"SELECT ((A+B)+ABS(A-B))/2" then you will get:A>=B : A, A<B: B, ELSE null.

So your company attracts people who are worth a $75 k salary, but now your manager trains them to be worth $150 k and you're surprised they leave for a better opportunity?

Dec 4, 2019 08:40
Well defined policies and procedures and no: it's not acceptable that everything is a special case that doesn't have to follow procedure: change the darn procedure then.

Is this desk in the company office or at your home?

You just sold you house...

Dec 6, 2018 07:56
This is a hypothetical question right?

Sep 26, 2018 13:44
@candied_orange A de facto standard is a custom or convention that has achieved a dominant position by public acceptance or market forces you can keep calling it "popular" but that doesn't give it enough credit. That's like calling science "just another opinion".
Sep 26, 2018 13:44
@andrew I did some research: Kazakhstan notation is: yyyy.dd.mm that is not the same as YYYYMMDD. The difference is only 2 points but very relevant.
Sep 26, 2018 13:44
@candied_orange using YYYYMMDD is following the ISO standard 8601.

Sep 21, 2018 12:14
@MichaelK the image posted is bad. The reasons why we should not use straws: there was a turtle with a plastic straw in its nose are also bad. The only reasons I've seen all play on emotional responses where scientific research to back it up is not there. The anti plastic straw movement is just a hype. Just like the anti plastic cup movement was a hype where people en-masse started using paper cups "because environment" which actually was more harmful to that environment.
Sep 20, 2018 13:55
It boils down to: don't lie. There can be a million good reasons to ban straws, but if you tell me to reduce plastic use and then show me an ocean full of plastic, that implies that the plastic I use ends up in the ocean. If I later find out, that's not the case, then you have been lying to me. And people react badly when being lied to.

@dly This a good and true answer. Maybe not one you like but: the question was why someone was called a noob. Not about whether it's fair they're called a noob. I can empathize with you that you like to play the game you like. It doesn't change the reasons why someone is being called a noob. How fair or unfair that may be.
May 15, 2018 23:32
@dly CS:GO on all levels is competitive. That's how that game works. You will be considered a noob for choosing those weapons. It clearly shows you are making suboptimal choices. If not a noob, then you're a troll for choosing those weapons because you either deliberately don't want to play to win, or you're a so much better player then the level you are playing that you just want to humiliate your opponents.

@Acccumulation where I live you have higher learning, where you can get your bachelor degrees but not your masters, it's like the first 2-3 years of university, if you complete it you can do a shortened university program to get your masters.
Feb 21, 2018 15:58
@jamesqf don't forget I'm talking about 20 years ago. You would be lucky to have a teacher with a STEM background if anything. Also in that time, right before the bursting of dotcom bubble the need for programmers was so high that anyone was hired. Any finished college education would land you a job but also you being home schooled programmer was a guaranteed hire. They preferred that over the psychology majors.

This answer is so incredibly diligent that it can be replied to all.
Feb 7, 2018 15:13
@Thomo the fact that the original email is sent to everyone is exactly the reason why the reply needs to be sent to everyone. If you don't, everyone will only have the first mail to form an opinion off. There's nothing unprofessional about that. It's about protecting your reputation. I think if people humiliate other people publicly, then, if they're wrong, it needs to be set straight publicly, with the exact same visibility.

Jan 29, 2018 16:12
One of the things is the "people complain about x and if I change it people complain about y" sentence. "So I can never do it right." This fails to take into account that the persons complaining about x are other persons then the ones complaining about y.

@Voo our company laptops don't contain any programs, user data or trade secrets, we use a remote desktops via vpn. Not a file leaves the company network. If your company laptop contains user data or company secrets, you're doing it wrong, regardless of if you're using it private or for business.
Jan 25, 2018 19:32
-1 This answer is much too rigid, there are a lot of situations where personal use of company property is expressly allowed. For instance (limited) personal use of a company issued car.

Jan 10, 2018 15:08
@terdon first: it wasn't an exam it was a hunt to catch cheaters. Like the asker said, he shouldn't have done this he should have gone to the dean when he suspected cheating. Second: let's say the entire group cheated, what could have been the best reaction they could have given? Well, if they want to get away with cheating, then: not answer at all.
Jan 10, 2018 15:08
@terdon well it wasn't, it was set-up to catch cheaters. By no means was it a simple question. It was a loaded question to catch a cheater.
Jan 10, 2018 15:08
Did you actually have a right to ask the question? What's the rules in your institution for suspected fraud?

A lot of workplaces rely on aggressiveness and abuse to keep their subordinates in line and they would consider that professional. And yes, they would consider that normal. If you don't have any good arguments or the people that work for you are smarter, then at least by making them scared they listen to you.

Nov 18, 2017 13:03
What I would do is get them to pay half back, to show good intentions and then wave the other half as a gift. That way, you're the good person because you just gave them a lot of money, relationships are saved. But after that, a strict : "no more loans". If you can and want to help, choose where you do and do it as a gift. My policy is a no loans between family and friends. And the worst thing you can do is: no more loans till you pay me back, because that will open the floodgates for future requests.

4 weeks on the job and you're already talking about several missed deadlines?

Oct 16, 2017 13:04
Because creepy is in the eye of the beholder.
Oct 16, 2017 13:04
Fortunately not.
Oct 16, 2017 13:03
And being creepy isn't illegal
Oct 16, 2017 13:03
Because you're setting a very low bar for being creepy

I can't work with: it was an attack because she felt attacked. In no way will I accept that as a definition of attack.
Oct 16, 2017 12:58
^^
Oct 16, 2017 12:58
that's laying the bar for an attack much too low.
Oct 16, 2017 12:57
I don't agree she was attacked in any way or form.
Oct 16, 2017 12:57
I can understand mary was blindsided and confused by what happened. And that cuased her upset. I don

I can't see why hookups won't occur at work. There's people, they meet, magic happens, people get married.
Oct 16, 2017 12:55
work is totally a place for hookups
Oct 16, 2017 12:54
ok so he should have asked mary if she was willing?
Oct 16, 2017 12:52
mary was not willing and she can say so.
Oct 16, 2017 12:51
someone feeling attacked doesn't make an action an attack.
Oct 16, 2017 12:49
A flirt is not an attack.
Oct 16, 2017 11:16
@MichaelKarnerfors
Oct 16, 2017 11:16
@MichaelKarnerfors such behaviour is totally fine. If you meet a stranger you're attracted to, this is one of the most polite ways to set up a meeting because it leaves all the power in the hands of the receiver of the number.
Oct 16, 2017 11:16
@MichaelKarnerfors he didn't step over the line.
Oct 16, 2017 11:16
@MichaelKarnerfors In the world where you live in, how do people get relationships? Where do people meet?

Oct 12, 2017 12:33
@marstato you're absolutely not making sense. It's not symbols/digit. There's no 8 times the amount of information. The example is about having 4 instead of 2 states on a voltage line.(the symbol) To encode the 8 times of information in that symbol like you say, the voltage on the line would be multiple voltages at the same time, which is impossible.

-1 for calling objects that have getters and setter not-real objects. That's the no true Scotsman fallacy.

Aug 25, 2017 16:57
because there's only 1 human race) is racism and it doesn't matter who does it to who, it's bad. I understand there are problems in society that needs to be fixed to give everyone equal chances (which does not mean equal outcome) my whole point is about not redefining the term racism to something only white men can do.
Aug 25, 2017 16:57
@astronat @astronat I don't have to because that's not my point. Racism is bad in any way shape or form. Acting on prejudice on basis of religion or skin color (I don't like the word race,
Aug 25, 2017 14:27
@astronot you're using some kind of twisted half-academic version of the term racist which is meant to mean that only white men can be racist. Normal people use the dictionary meaning of racist: treating people different because of skin color/religion etc. And yes, black people can be just as racist as white people. No power needed.
