This is an idiomatic phrase (actually Biblical, Luke 12:48). To those God has given talents and gifts, He expects them to use those gifts. From the Wikipedia article on the Parable of the Faithful Servant from Luke 12: The second part of the parable includes a caution that much will be required of the person to whom much is given.
