So you do have a PHD, and you think that a problem that you and your colleages couldn't solve would be an appropriate measuring stick to judge him by??? That seems like a ridiculous standard to set.

If he's the best boss you ever had and that's the worst thing you can think of, he's doing pretty great.

Jan 19, 2023 18:31
I'd say these conversations could still be interesting. Obviously not the whole story from the beginning of time... But I think it'd be interesting to know why they decided on Cherry instead of Oak, what was that decision process like? How are they thinking to come to that decision? Or you can ask hypotheticals, like why do they think Spiders are attacking you? See what kind of backstory they fill in.

Nov 16, 2022 00:24
lmao if you can't see, you probably aren't in a line of work where you are physically risking your life like this.

Oct 9, 2022 21:51
Yeah, you can find nice business casual clothes to wear. It sounds like they aren't even asking him to wear a tie. How you present yourself is very important.

It's actually common for people to overspend on their company card and then pay back later, sometimes weeks or months. I'd try to save myself the embarrassement and try to get a small loan in the next few days and go to the accounting department and get it resolved, rather than confess directly to my boss.

Oct 9, 2022 03:54
@wiss13There are quite a few countries where war and hyper inflation are ruining countries. Also, you can spend a little more now to live closer/more comforably, and just work in Germany for 1-2 years more than you were planning? Maybe you will work better and fit in better and you will get a promotion or raise? You are thinking short term.
Oct 9, 2022 03:54
@wiss13 To be perfectly honest, you probably are not as effective as you can be at work if you are taking so much time travelling and not having your own place. You should be thinking about retiring in Germany, not your home country. You never know what will happen, disaster could happen and your savings can be spent quickly. You could be robbed.
Oct 7, 2022 16:25
Jesus, dude, I get wanting to live where it is cheaper to save money at the expense of living further away from work, but if you are making good money it is REALLY nice to have your own place. Consider finding a place of your own just because it would be nice. I think you'd enjoy it more than you would think.

A prophecy is a foretelling of future events, not a spell. Somehow someone was able to see parts of the future, and passed along what they saw. They saw a hero, they didn't choose one.

The amount of self deception is staggering.

@mmeent Yeah I could see that, that does make a difference. Suppose a marine biologist gets lent a boat to do research on, would the captain/owner be listed as an author for supplying a hard to get and more expensive resource? It feels like you need to participate in the original research to be an author, and you are a contributor for providing resources.
May 1, 2022 03:11
@markvs How is this different from using other studies as a reference? Other results are referenced and credited all the time without giving authorship?

Mar 24, 2022 04:15
To make a general life lesson perfectly clear: You can't get 20 people to agree on anything. Anything short of raises or bonuses, you'll never get 20 people to agree on any one thing. Even with raises, a few people will be suspicious, and will ask if extra work will be expected.

Jan 26, 2022 09:01
@Steve Yeah, I meant to describe the difference between the two in that on day 1 of a new job I can write some useful VBA. With large companies, it can be a whole approval process just to get an IDE, and you have to convince multiple people the value it'll bring, and then get your work approved to interact with so and so's servers, etc. It's so much easier to do it in VBA and be able to demonstrate the value immediately rather than go through the hassle I described. It sounds like if he requested to do it, they'd turn him down.
Jan 26, 2022 09:01
Actually you can automate stuff with Excel. I make good money having built dashboards with VBA lol. Yeah, you can use Python, but usually granting permissions takes forever, and trying to convince your managers its a good idea doesn't work. With Excel and VBA you can just do it, and then when you show it to them they are instantly happy instead of having to fight them on it.

Tell them you are being 15K under market value and now you want to paid 15K over market value. Tell them to pound sand if they decline.

"Bona Fide Occupational Qualification". They are asking a legal question, if you can physically do the job in question. They aren't asking about your condition, but if you can do the job without putting yourself or others at unnecessary risks. For example, someone who has unpredictable seizures probably shouldn't be on a ladder constantly or a truck driver.

Why would you sell at the bottom of the market? Continueing to buy consistently means you are buying at the bottom of the market, so that you gain back more when the market returns.

You will always have authority as a teacher, but what you strive for is respect and recognition as a good teacher, and that comes from others recognizing good character. Good Character includes honesty and humility

Oct 28, 2021 00:30
Yeah, it's hard to imagine the distance it takes to get someone from 0 experience to absolute beginner. There's a huge amount of groundwork that is common to programming that experienced people take for granted when learning a new language.

Since you have a wide range of deliverables, this is a great opportunity to make the case that you should be a manager, and that you should have some coders/testers/engineers under your management.

Something something Science handwaving blue reflects certain radiation from the sun to protect organisms from low threat radiation. Or it's the result of certain minerals consumed to protect against radiation, imagine everything like the Flamingo who is only pink because of its diet.

Speaking of knowledge of the war... How about detaining any general that defects. Lee was tempted to fight for the Union, but said he couldn't fight against his home state. If Lincoln had just detained him, the war would have gone a lot better for the Union.

This is the exact reason. I've worked for a lot of different contracting agencies, and they do this often.

"Describes not explain" doesn't sound right. Gravity itself is the explanation for several natural phenomenon, and the Higgs-Boson explains gravity. Just because Gravity can be described and it's effects measured, doesn't mean science can't also explain it.

Crypto is good at storing value, it's not so good at being transactional. Like gold. It stores value, but is not convenient for using as payment.

Aug 18, 2021 14:12
Who were these other people? Other PHD students? Post Docs? Professors? You are brand new, it's hard to imagine that these criticisms are really about you. It's hard to tell why this happened, but it sounds like it's political. Something is happening between your advisor and these other people involved, and they are using you as the battle grounds to criticize someone elses decisions.

Aug 18, 2021 03:28
The advice you need is to loosen up a bit and be more friendly. You can share a lunch with coworkers and not get too personal. You will have a very difficult career if you intend on not being personable and give everyone the cold shouldar.

Wow, an opportunity to make an employee very happy and dedicated to her job and your company, and your sentiment is "meh, I don't feel like it". YOu say she is motivated, but she about to lose all motivation. Why are managers response always "how can I harm this person" instead of "How can I build this person into a better employee".

You could hire a paralegal for a small price to deliver it and explain the situation to him. Make it a cashiers check or a Same as Money deposit product. A lawyer might be too expensive, and will take at least an hour. Another member of the legal profession will have an obligation to fulfill the contract with you.

Jul 20, 2021 00:28
They aren't making any committments to you, they'll cut you loose the very second it becomes convenient. Go for it, business always has risks, hiring someone who moves on in 6-12 months is inherent in every candidate.

Jun 26, 2021 03:17
You need to ask people to create an agenda and attach it in the meeting invite, and then you can hold people to the agenda. Then when the 30 mins are up, you can say "Hey guys, I have another meeting, if we didn't get to everything on the agenda then lets setup another meeting." Hopefully this sets the tone to tackle the items on the agenda and to keep to the time on the meeting invite.

You have some leverage here, if your boss actualy threatens anything, you can admit this doesn't look good. But it looks much worse to his boss that he as a manager has no clue as to what his employees are doing

Both parties develop a coalition to govern before running for an office. Many people are single issue voters, and often don't support all of the other parties policies.

"This is just fluff" or filler, come to mind. Meaning something says a lot, without any giving any practical information on how to do it. "This is just a bunch of buzz words" also describes whatever is trendy, and people expect it to solve all their problems; "Big Data" and "Cloud Computing" were big buzz words that seem to have died down.

Isn't technology very wasteful in the R&D stage, and then after proof of concept, engineering serves to make it efficient, portable, & viable from a commercial stand point?

You can take his computer away and ask him to copy the dictionary. If he voices that he doesn't like this, ask him to at least pretend to do some menial amount of work to get his computer back.

May 11, 2021 02:31
An AI would be able to do a complex claculus in less than a second, much faster than a human could even copy and paste it in a calculator. Asking an AI to compose a unique poem it would be able to do it about a specific topic could be done in less than a second. It's telling that an AI can do any number of tasks and respond almost instantly.

In general, a good interviewer will want to see that youhave a logical approach to a problem, that you think about it, ask questions about assumptions, see that you have a thought process in mind. It doesn't have to be the exact way they do it, unless you have a bad interviewer, in which case you can't do anything about that.

Don't ask for advice on how to improve your email from this professor. The professor seems to think that course information is something you can research yourself, and would expect you to improve your emails through your own research too. You'd be comitting the same mistake again

You have it backwards, time slows down for those on the approaching the speed of light while time continues as normal on earth. So if 100 years pass on earth, it'll be only a fraction of time for the computer to work.

Trying to get free work out of employees is wage theft, and you can report it, and that wage theft is FAR more unprofessional than what he is accusing you of.

Problem with that is that only 1/2 of the universes will get clarification whether the experiment worked or not. All universes should agree to wait for an experiment in which we all can be informed.

We kinda aleady do. If you belong to a rich, politically connected family you will go to the best schools, learn a lot from your family, plan to go to law school in middle school, and have networked with other politically connected students through out middle school to college. Becoming a politician is 1000 times easier under those circumstances than the circumstances of average person.
