@IvanT. - I think you're asking a legitimate question, but by virtue of having given your reasons you're drawing some analysis of your actual reasons. Maybe you can clarify - do you literally just care about the question in your title, or are you looking for insight into your exact specifics?

oh, yeah, I wasn't trying to suggest that anyone was saying to shut them down at all. Just sharing my thoughts, not targeted at anyone!
Mar 17, 2020 17:29
Ideally I'd like to see us do whatever we can to help facilitate these questions, versus find reasons to shut them down. I tried to write my meta question neutrally but with such a significant impact on so many workplaces, I think we need to do what we can to be helpful.
Mar 17, 2020 17:22
I don't think we have a real issue at this point, or that we need to change anything, but I feel like we're on the verge of getting flooded and I figured it would be worth having a discussion now because tensions could get high in the midst of things
Mar 17, 2020 17:20
@DarkCygnus thanks for pointing out the Health tag on my meta question
Mar 17, 2020 17:14
I agree regarding your frustration, and I think your answer does a good job of pointing out the UK specific context
Mar 17, 2020 17:14
@motosubatsu I think you want a "be" in your first sentence, as in "You'd have to be"
Mar 16, 2020 13:19
meanwhile they're all a high match for the "real" user I suspected of being the troll, which felt nice to confirm since I didn't get anywhere trying to look at date and time patterns in SEDE
Mar 16, 2020 13:18
I've been feeding all the troll posts I've been able to find through a software that categorizes speech and grammar patterns, that one doesn't really match at all.
Mar 16, 2020 13:16
I don't think it's the troll, the writing style doesn't fit
Mar 16, 2020 13:05
well done
Mar 16, 2020 13:02
Do you want to take a stab at editing that question? I'm happy to also, just didn't want to overlap if you already were
Mar 16, 2020 12:58
apparently
Mar 16, 2020 12:58
I don't do grammar this early in the morning

Mar 16, 2020 12:58
I feel like it get take some edits to make it less bait-like
Mar 13, 2020 17:36
but then I thought, I can just go home and make my own (germ free) pie
Mar 13, 2020 17:35
@motosubatsu I have to admit I'm a little curious, being a big fan of pie
Mar 13, 2020 17:22
so let me get this straight, we're basically sending everyone home because of a contagious virus, but we want everyone to come to the break room and eat food together?
Mar 13, 2020 17:21
The funny part is, minutes after the email about WFH, someone else sent an email saying there was pie in the break room for "pi day" which is tomorrow
Mar 13, 2020 16:36
My employer just announced full time WFH for all back office staff if/when local schools are closed
Mar 13, 2020 16:09
I'm still trying to reconcile the fact that Shog doesn't like Beyonce
Mar 12, 2020 13:22
What's the German for dad joke? because that's what my kids would have called that.
Mar 12, 2020 13:15
haha

I know a little German

Q: How can I deal with irascible, unprofessional manager?

TheValI work for a large-size engineering firm, in the R&D department. I am working there from 6 months by now, and it is my first work after my MSc degree. I like (unsure now) both the company and the position, because I can work in research projects with other universities. I also collaborate with th...

I consider myself to have a wide vocabulary but I will admit this question had me googling for a definition:
Mar 11, 2020 11:18
well done everyone
Mar 11, 2020 11:13
I rarely get on in the evenings, after staring at computers all day I need a break!
Mar 11, 2020 11:12
oh I missed that
Mar 11, 2020 11:09
greetings
Mar 10, 2020 19:39
This new blockquote look is crap. It makes long answers look more like a wall of text and doesn't break things up visually like the yellow background did
Mar 10, 2020 19:38
Yeah I want the yellow back
Mar 10, 2020 17:25
At home though my chromebook is touch and I love it!
Mar 10, 2020 17:25
In some cases I've even found it distracting, when someone tries to point at a laptop screen and unintentionally moves the mouse. We have a touch sensitive screen in our main conference room here, and no one seems to remember it's touch, so it's a pretty frequent thing that people will go to point at a graph or something and inadvertently click on it.

@motosubatsu jinx
Mar 10, 2020 14:57
Go to your user profile with ?tab=reputation at the end of the URL and it gives a play-by-play explanation of points
Mar 10, 2020 14:53
ah, that makes sense
Mar 10, 2020 14:41
I suppose it makes sense to hide who cast a vote so that it remains anonymous, but some votes have USERIDs
Mar 10, 2020 14:40
do you know why the userid column is mostly null on VOTES?
Mar 10, 2020 14:40
that would be an interesting angle as well
Mar 10, 2020 14:31
so this whole idea might be moot
Mar 10, 2020 14:30
I'm not sure if deleted content is stored permanently, since once a deleted question is a certain age (a few days?) you get a 404
Mar 10, 2020 14:30
this question is deleted, and isn't in POSTS or POSTSWITHDELETED or POSTHISTORY: 154669
Mar 10, 2020 14:29
yeah, that looks like just a tally of deleted things related to questions (i.e. a count of how many comments have been deleted from a question), not a list of actual deleted questions

My local government has requested that non-essential businesses either close or move to remote working if possible for the next two weeks so - to be clear - if VPN is not (officially) on the table, then is your office closing? Or are you considered an "essential" business?

All it takes is a shift in the employment market to the point where software/IT people aren't the kings of the hill any more, and advice like this will become damaging. Go ask anyone who is near retirement in traditional manufacturing or any of the other major industries of the past how things have gone for them over the last decade or so. Yes, you need to be able to take actual PTO, but that doesn't mean you should ignore the potential for a gray area where you might get called for a real emergency, and it might be in your best interest to take that call.
