@Pakk certainly the link mentioned provides no evidence that this was an instance of censorship.

There are a multitude of reasons why a student may not have been able to keep particular (or any) essays Like? I can't think of any. Why wouldn't you keep all your work?

Firmly disagree. Any monetary value attached to your employee's efforts immediately prompts the comparison of the effort made to the reward gained, and $100 is a puny amount for a salaried professional's time. The intent - to show a token of appreciation - will be lost in the value judgement attached to the amount, even if it's known that it's out of your own pocket and not the company's. The insinuation is that the company's valuation of the effort is zero.

Employees who are really busy often resent having to take time off because all the work they would otherwise be doing will still be there, and be even more urgent, when they return. If you're going to do this, you have to ensure that it's not simply delaying the next lot of over-committed work.

Why does his being salaried entail that he isn't paid overtime?

A point which may be relevant is their definition of "virgin" forest - by the definition in the paper, any forest whose original biodiversity has been altered, not one that has been razed and replanted: "The second kind of loss is qualitative and involves a change or degradation in the structure, function, or composition of an ecosystem (Franklin et al. 1981; Noss 1990). At some level of degradation, an ecosystem ceases to be natural. For example, a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forest may be high-graded by removing the largest, healthiest, and frequently, the genetically superior trees"

@Araucaria ? They have?
Oct 18, 2018 08:53
@R.Schmitz it doesn't exactly work like that in the UK. Sick leave is a statutory entitlement, is always paid after a certain number of days, doesn't come out of a pool of 'allowed' days (your employer has no right to allow or disallow you a statutory right) and would only feature in employment contracts if the company has chosen to go above and beyond the law.

@JimmyJames hit the nail on the head there. The management-type who wants to add resources is trying to get something done within a set of constraints. The conclusion to draw from being presented with Brooks' Law is that you can't get that thing done. This is not an easy fact to accept for someone who already feels that they lack control of the situation.

Does the premise of the question require spacecraft and not other more exotic forms of travel? A broken teleporter lost or discarded would be a plausible if unoriginal trope.

In my experience you can tell a recruiter that you can't accept calls between x and y hours, they'll acknowledge that, and then call you whenever they feel like anyway. So you can set up voicemail or block their number, but asking them to restrict their calls to certain hours will almost certainly be ignored. You can force the issue using voicemail and if they want your business, they'll have to deal.

Can we please clarify the meaning of the term "snapped" - in British English this would generally be interpreted as a momentary flash of rudeness or hostility, nothing to be particularly concerned about, but in U.S. English I gather the term is meant similarly to "going postal" or "losing it". This drastically alters the interpretation of the question.

A diligent mortgage agent may refuse to accept such an arrangement when they learn that you are not truly 'in it together' - but if they don't, that doesn't mean it isn't a terrible idea. Form a limited company with terms that adequately protect you and buy the property through it if you are truly insistent on helping this person.

Yes that's what bothers me
Dec 7, 2016 21:23
Are they presenting the same kind of machine solving the same kinds of problems that D-Wave proposes to?
Dec 7, 2016 21:21
The fact that there is only one D-Wave with no competitors and no contemporaries in academia publishing peer-reviewed research showing that their own similar machine produces good results gives me the creeps

@BernardMeurer I'm not at liberty to say. There is a degree of facetiousness involved but I just wanted to remark that this is not simply a trolling exercise so don't ban him straight away...please?
