@EndAntisemiticHate to my knowledge, the companies that use CrowdStrike's faulty product are 100% in control of the software they choose to use. Similarly, to my knowledge, said companies are 100% in control of outsourcing or not outsourcing vital business functions in an effort to make more money.

@Servaes thank you! That's much clearer for me +1
Dec 27, 2023 03:21
@Servaes I asked because I wanted to understand what you meant by "You are viewing this through a very woke lens, and very explicitly so, which is of course a non-starter for understanding anti-woke sentiments". I thought that it could mean "you're looking at this in way that's aware of social and political issues, which is a non-starter for understanding those who are against awareness of social and political issues", but found that illogical (this is the politics SE, so an awareness of political issues is somewhat encouraged), and wanted you to clarify.
Dec 27, 2023 03:21
@Servaes "That is complete and utter nonsense" - so you're saying that words don't have definitions, and those definitions are not to be found in dictionaries, and when we use words those words don't mean their defined meanings, and if you use a word to mean something other than it's definition then that's not confusing? The only one trying to argue "hypotheticals in the abstract" is you. I'm talking about concrete definitions of words. "ask for clarification": you can't define a word that you insist on using incessantly, how are you going be able to clarify anything?
Dec 27, 2023 03:21
@Servaes this has nothing to do with your high school philosophy class. Words have definitions. These definitions are found in dictionaries. When we use words, those words mean the things that they're defined to mean. If you use a word and mean something different then that's confusing. If you're unable or unwilling to define what you really mean then you should use different words to explain what you want to say.
Dec 27, 2023 03:21
@Servaes I think it's important for one to be able to define the words one uses. Otherwise misunderstandings occur. That's why I linked to a proper definition: "aware of social and political issues, especially racism". So if you mean something else when you use the word, that's going to be confusing to people who understand it to mean what it's actually defined as meaning.
Dec 27, 2023 03:21
@Servaes what is your definition of the word "woke"?

@Crazydre but if they gave a social security number then they would be identifying themselves, which they don't have to do :-)
Jul 13, 2023 22:24
@phoog "as a non-Austrian citizen you need to be able to identify yourself, the exception is only for Austrians" there seems to be a paradox there :-) how do they identify the people who don't need to identify themselves?

@MaikLowrey I suggested generating a hash because I mis-read your question! :-D Upon reading your question again, I see that you already have a unique identifier: it's the link that's in the comment field; so there's no need for hash generation. Sorry for the misunderstanding :-)
Feb 13, 2023 14:22
@MaikLowrey hi! Well, I wasn't asking about the data handling: I was suggesting that you circumvent the need to store any copyrighted data in your database by using client-side scripting to render the card on the user's device. Then I suggested that you generate a unique hash of the data and store that hash in your database. Like this you are not storing or serving anyone's copyrighted content.
Feb 13, 2023 14:22
@MaikLowrey if you create your "card" on the fly using client-side script then you're not storing anyone's copyrighted content, or even requesting it from your servers. You could have your client-side script create a hash of the card and send that hash to your servers, to then relate it with other users.

Bear in mind that teenagers need more sleep than adults and younger children - google search - what is enough sleep for you is likely to be several hours less than your daughter needs.

This answer only mentions the clothes, but that's just a small part of the question. The OP was told to rent a more expensive apartment and to eat more expensive food. What should they do about that?

@DonBranson it ignores it by only focusing on one narrow aspect and not mentioning any other factors. 100 years ago there were far fewer people in the country. When looking at the rate of mass shootings per capita, instead of the number of incidents, the increase isn't as sharp. Also, while the rate remains fairly stable, the number of deaths has increased.
Jun 10, 2022 14:12
@DonBranson I see. That overly simplistic way of looking at it wilfully ignores all other factors, such as a reduction in mass shootings during the Federal Assault Weapons Ban and an increase after it was lifted, and a similar correlation between a rise in mass shootings at the same time as a rise in number of assault weapons manufactured, and research showing that "Mass shootings involving assault weapons or high-capacity magazines were far deadlier".
Jun 10, 2022 14:12
What is the point of these posts? What does it matter what guns were available 100 years ago? 100 years ago people send children up chimneys to clean them. Is that also something that we should aspire to in the 21st century?

May 17, 2022 00:35
Can you get away with ignoring it? (That's what I've done with my current company's IT department's conditions of use document, and it's been 5 years without anyone querying it)

It depends where you're travelling to and from. A month ago I flew between Spain and England and didn't have to show PCR or LFT results - I only had to upload the QR code on my vaccination certificate to the different systems operated by both countries and everything was fine.

Do you do code reviews before merging code into the main branch? Do you have automated tests which would catch mistakes? Do you have different environments through which all new code must pass before it reaches production?

@NiceToMytyuk ...It's like the expression "trying to run before you can walk". I think you'll get better results if you start with "crawling" (programming basics - the game I mentioned or Scratch) then move to "walking" (real programming but with Python, then repeat with JS), and finally to "running" (AngularJS - building on the foundations from the previous stages) [2/2]
Oct 28, 2021 08:18
@NiceToMytyuk it's a shame that you've been restricted by the company like this. After programming for several years, it becomes apparent that the language you use to do it doesn't really matter. I think that trying to teach JS+Angular as their first programming language will have the effect of putting most people off programming for life...[1/2]
Oct 26, 2021 11:05
@NiceToMytyuk I wouldn't use Javascript as a first programming language. Try Python. In fact, start with having them play a computer game like Shenzen I/O to see if their brains are up to learning how to program. If they manage to complete the first few levels of that then get them started learning Python.

the emergency number which should be understood internationally is 112 wikipedia map
Oct 4, 2021 04:06
@ChrisH London used to be just 01, and then they switched to inner and outer London being 071 and 081 respectively, and then all regions changed from 0xxx to 01xxx so London became 0171 and 0181, and finally they changed it again to be 020 (with the first digit of the number coming from the old inner/outer system). They made a right mess of it :-D

Sep 9, 2021 07:36
It's 'correct' as in it's used colloquially and understood, but grammatically it's not correct because "20" is an adjective, and follows the standard rules of using the verb 'to be' + adjective: "I am 20", "I will be 21 next month", "I was 19 last year". Other colloquialisms are frequently used and understood: "you crazy!", for example, is commonly understood to mean "you are crazy!", but that doesn't make it grammatically correct. (That probably isn't the best example, but it's the first one that popped into my head :-) )

re. the comments - you can flag your own answer and ask a moderator for action
Sep 9, 2021 07:36
You can use the verb "to be" when talking about a scheduled event in the future, such as a birthday, but being a particular age is not a scheduled event. That's why "it's my birthday tomorrow" is correct, but "I'm 20 tomorrow" is not.

@JonBentley "it is reasonable for a site owner, who has worked to create and provide free content, to view attempts to block their revenue sources as malicious" - I can see why they might feel that way, yes.
Aug 21, 2021 17:29
@JonBentley if a site owner makes their content freely available via an HTTP connection then that's up to them. They can't then claim that people accessing that content are stealing it. My ad blocker blocks trackers. If a site serves its own adverts then I see them. There's nothing to stop site owners using advertising responsibly, but hardly any of them do.
Aug 21, 2021 17:29
@JonBentley that seems to depend on jurisdiction - I see that in the US the act of blocking ads could contravene copyright law; however in Germany people are free to block whatever they like, and I've just skim-read an article which claims that sites which use adblock-detection code might be acting illegally in the EU (though this appears to be untried) (edit: your comment disappeared as I posted my reply!)

If you look on the bright side: you're getting paid to do nothing. John wants to do your job. Everyone else wants John to do your job. You could just let him do it, collect your monthly salary, and look around the company to see if there's something else there that you'd rather do instead. Or do whatever you want - it doesn't sound like anyone will mind.

@ColleenV "I don’t have separate sick time, they give us a larger pool of time to use for both vacation and sick leave" - is that common where you live? I've never heard of anything like that before. Sick time isn't holiday time. (I would ask "can they get away with that?" but they obviously can)

@John lol, good one :-D although it depends on the country in question (actually, after looking at this, I see that it depended on the region or town in many cases!) Thanks for the metric measures, though :) (what is 1000lb, mentioned as the weight of the bolt, btw? It sounds quite heavy!)

@GrumpyYoungMan "so this value should be in feet as well" - metres would be even better IMO - that way the majority of the planet could understand it :)
