Many of the graduate level textbooks I worked through were not great. It was when my professors supplemented the materials that my study group and I were able to get anywhere with any depth.

You might look at high energy protons. In proton therapy, different proton velocities will deposit their energies at different tissue depths. Some variation of this might work for your story.

I suggest you look into 'vacuum polarization'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_polarization I'm pretty sure its the name of the effect you're interested in.
