@bmike that sure reads like an Ubuntu question to me.
Nov 12, 2013 13:47
@timothymh That's a very useful feature.

Ah. Missed the tiny shift icon--reading on the iPad. :)
Oct 31, 2013 13:56
⌘ - Space used to bring up a Spotlight search box. Did they change that behavior?
Sep 26, 2013 15:26
@stuffe I'd guess it is but it's most likely going to fixed by a subsequent release, or maybe a fresh install.

Q: iOS 7 music controls not working

KevonyaAs soon as I updated my phone, my music controls stopped working. On the lock screen and in the Control Center, I can only change the volume, not the song. The buttons to change the song light up when I touch them but the song doesn't change. I have to go into the Music app to change the song eve...

I find the demographic of this question interesting:

Sep 26, 2013 13:54
@patrix that's a paraphrase (with some direct, unattributed quotes) from the MIT jargon file.
Sep 26, 2013 13:33
I should clarify—I don't think you'd be stealing at all. It's part of the language, and a word that needs to be taken back from the black hat crackers. ;)
Sep 26, 2013 13:31
@Brant you wouldn't be stealing from me. Stephen Levy discusses the origins of the phrase in his book Hackers. One can hack away at a problem. An ugly, but effective solution can be a hack, or something hacked together. There are displays of classic MIT hacks on the walls throughout campus—like the fire truck atop the dome—most of them are physical and have nothing to do with computer code.
Sep 25, 2013 22:55
@stuffe me too. But Schneier used the word and I'm quoting him. It is a neat hack in the MIT sense of the word.
Sep 25, 2013 22:18
Apple is trying to balance security with convenience. This is a cell phone, not a ICBM launcher or even a bank account withdrawal device. Apple is offering an option to replace a four-digit PIN -- something that a lot of iPhone users don't even bother with -- with a fingerprint. Despite its drawbacks, I think it's a good trade-off for a lot of people.
Sep 25, 2013 22:18
Bruce Schneier comments on the Chaos Computer Club's fooling the iPhone Fingerprint scanner, calling it a nice hack but goes on to conclude:

And in other news, Ars Forums Commenters' (aka Arsers) heads' explode contemplating the (near movie plot) exploit of Touch ID. I need to go outside!

That is an almost perfect description.

@bmike I'm a supporter of Apple Support overall, I just find the forums to be difficult.
Sep 25, 2013 16:22
@bmike and you were way too kind to the Apple forums, which is your noble way.
Sep 25, 2013 16:20
@stuffe I do the same, and my observations are similar. I don't reconcile the account though. ;)
Sep 25, 2013 14:34
@stuffe I'll allow it—but you're on a slippery slope. ;)
Sep 25, 2013 13:51
@stuffe your attention to detail is…admirable?

I also don't think this is a likely backdoor, but it's fun to think about.
Sep 21, 2013 12:05
@Undo @bmike I'm not certain that they would. While I marvel at the skill, patience and resourcefulness that security researchers and hackers bring to the game, we're not certain that the secure container on the A7 chip will relinquish any information. If you can't count the number of hashes, and lack one of the required "master" prints, how would you find the vulnerability? Note that I'm not saying it isn't possible, merely that it isn't a certainty…

You've beaten me down with your persistence.
Sep 20, 2013 11:06
I'll leave that debate for another time. Running out the door here. :). I'm not going to fight you on the tag, I don't see any real harm, I just think it's too finite to be useful. Next we'll have tags for Elm and Pine.
Sep 20, 2013 11:02
I don't really see need for an editor-specific tag as related questions should be readily searchable through other means.

Yeah, I was posting as a point if interest, not sound the horns.

Sep 19, 2013 19:42
At least my messages are flowing again. Just before I solved the problem I managed to force my phone to "invalidate" the id.
Sep 19, 2013 19:32
@bmike Passwords that are (were) tied to ACN and ASW accounts expire every 6 months. Not sure if this will be ongoing for me now that I'm out. I guess its an edge case which is why nobody else has seemingly had this issue.

@bmike No need. I solved it myself. Posting the answer to my question next... Short version: When your Apple ID password expires, your iOS device may not alert you. ;)
