Good point. still no easy feat detecting them from mars, picking the right ones and reverse engineering those without attracting attention.
Sep 15, 2020 12:07
Just reading the data, if you suppose they have advanced computers that can crack our encryption, will give them some insight probably, but only whats send over the specific satellite anyways. It would require them to have a lot of knowledge over our technology already though. Maybe they have to capture on satellite and revers engineer it? Hard to do this unnoticed though ...
Sep 15, 2020 12:07
The provider would probably notice a satellite not functioning correctly or havin strange traffic. Also I believe any http-based-service like google will timeout before successful handshake with a ping time of several minutes!

Sep 11, 2020 18:13
If they have superior computers they can probably mine bitcoin an use these to hire spys to get the anything they want.

@AnnaRudakovskaja Your comments highlight very well how poor judgment, ignorance and prejudice is responsible for messy, hard to maintain code bases and, failed or over budget projects and unnecessary workplace discrimination.

@user5728491 The fact that money can be used as universal tool to manifest ones dreams and ideas and in the process also to determine access and distribution to scares resources, including ones free time is unique compared to any other comparable aspects one might have.
Aug 21, 2020 11:06
@user5728491 If Bill Gates decides he wants to cure malaria or Paul Allen decides he wants to roam the Oceans in Luxury ... well they just do it. If the average joe decides the same, well the can dream it. You´ll find that has nothing to do with the length of their hair nor the number of their children.

Aug 17, 2020 19:34
@O.R.Mapper I guess , then it is high time to read some good books...
Aug 16, 2020 16:11
@Sycorax: Yes, that one. That would go on my list if I wanted a job as architect. If I wanted a job in data warehousing I´d choose "Data Warehouose Toolit" by Ralph Kimball and so on ...
Aug 16, 2020 16:11
The thing is, I´d talk more about books that explain an concept rather than ones that teach a specific skill, which will probably age fast.
Aug 16, 2020 16:11
"The Clean Coder" by Robert C Martin (uncle bob) is also a good read even if I do not agree with everything he says. Has some good talks to be found on youtube also. Most notably this one: youtu.be/ecIWPzGEbFc
Aug 16, 2020 16:11
"Joy Inc." by Robert Sheridan is also great and offers an alternative vision of professional work organisation, albeit one the industry does not seem ready for, yet, unfortunately.
Aug 16, 2020 16:11
For A job interview, it depends what Job I´d wanted to get...
Aug 16, 2020 16:11
@Sycorax Must reads for every Prgrammer are, in my Opinion "Peopleware" by Timothy Lister and Tom DeMarco (about workplace and productivity) "Design Patterns" by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph E. Johnson and John Vlissides (Gang of four) "Refactoring" by Martin Fowler

Aug 14, 2020 13:07
Can you state the country please? In Germany for example you would have a clear legal claim!

Jul 1, 2020 17:44
So either you get to leave a seemingly toxic workplace with "a huge amount of money" on top or you won´t have any trouble with X? Sounds good to me!

May 1, 2020 11:53
@leeand00 I does not matter If I believe you or not. Only thing that matters is if we can get a question here that fits the site and is actually answerable. I think there is a good question in this somwhere ...
May 1, 2020 11:53
Ah, so you running a business with the goal of keeping employees happy and sane sounds great to me. Still it is a very broad question. May you can focus more on the question and what you are having trouble with?
May 1, 2020 11:53
btw. while you are certainly describing a potentially stressful and, for some, unpleasant workplace, I can not see any direct relation to mental health. Only Advice I could currently give, is: If you don´t like it, don´t work there!
May 1, 2020 11:53
Do you plan on being an employee or an employer of said future environment?
May 1, 2020 11:53
@leeand00 did not have that problem here, but I felt the same way on IPS, so I stopped participating. Maybe you should take a deep breath an re-read your question, because currently, basically it reads like a big rant. (and isn´t that what reddit is for? ;)
May 1, 2020 11:53
Hello @leeand00 - I am not the down voter, but I can see that your Question is probably not the best fit. It is extremely broad and I am not sure it is possible to give you an answer as there are many ways to operate a company/department. I any case, this is more a topic for a book than a forum post. Please have a look at the help center, especially: workplace.stackexchange.com/help/dont-ask

Apr 28, 2020 12:57
Also How would that conversation go. Boss, I want to do the gig from home - Why, we sold in-house consulting days, we have to go there? - I won´t tell you why, just do it?
Apr 28, 2020 12:53
And if he can´t? The consulting jobs I did so far always required my physical presence. (mainly because the customer expected it) I don# t understand you logic here
Apr 28, 2020 12:15
Also I´d think it is quite dangerous id you had recent surgery that prevents you from lifting things and you don´t tell your employer about it, so he will ask you to help lifting things.
Apr 28, 2020 12:14
BTW: In Germany it´s the other way round. Employers pay a disability-fee if they do not have a certain % of staff with disabilities. So mostly an employer will welcome people with disability status if they can.
Apr 28, 2020 12:12
So how would an consultant who can´t hold a door travel to the customer with his luggage and his notebook?
Apr 28, 2020 12:08
Is this Canadian law you are talking about here?
Apr 28, 2020 12:07
So they can´t test anything at all? If I am having a disability that prevents me from concentrating, surely a coding test would be unfair?
Apr 28, 2020 11:40
so you did answer non of my questions ...
Apr 28, 2020 11:15
An if he ask you to help put up some server racks, some month in you do what ...?
Apr 28, 2020 11:15
Ho will you travel to the customer with your luggage and Notbook?
Apr 28, 2020 11:14
So instead of informing your employer that you have a condition, you hide the fact?
Apr 28, 2020 11:13
@nick012000 Did your doctor also forbid you to talk? No? So you could have passed the test surely by acknowledging the Situation and offering to get help no?
Apr 28, 2020 11:10
So how are you gonna get yourself into the building when you can´t hold a door?
Apr 28, 2020 11:09
@nick012000 If you can´t hold the door that pretty obvious. How are you gonna get in? As for the rest, as I said, you can still acknowledge the situation and do try to help without doing any lifting.
Apr 28, 2020 11:09
@nick012000 I am repeating myself her but: OP dos not state anywhere that you physically have to carry the box ...
Apr 28, 2020 11:09
@nick012000 Also, I don´t know if you read the question correctly, but this whole thread is not about interview questions but about behavioral "tests"
Apr 28, 2020 11:09
@nick012000 I still don´t get where you see a policy that puts anyone at a disadvantage? Would you care to explain, so I can follow your reasoning?
Apr 28, 2020 11:09
@nick012000 Where do you get the Discrimination from? There is a difference between Ignoring a problem and not being able to help but but recognizing it and for example get someone who can. OP dos not state anywhere that you physically have to carry the box or that is is always a heay box.

Apr 17, 2020 02:08
@Moo I don´t know if you want to misunderstand me here? My original comment was in regards to OP´s question and this answer. Employer cant retaliate thorough reference (in Germany). And it has to be benevolent/positive/in good faith whatever you wanna call it (not a native speaker, the German word is "wohlwollend")
Apr 17, 2020 02:08
@Moo Well the law states the reference has to be "benevolent" and they cant lie. So they can´t retaliate by giving you a bad reference. Most of the cases that go before labor court end up in getting the reference letter corrected. Also i´ts cheap to go to court over this for the employee, he usually only has to pay his own lawyer.
Apr 17, 2020 02:08
Depending on where OP works, they could not even withhold a good reference. In Germany they would be required to give a positive reference if asked to by the employee ...

Apr 17, 2020 01:53
@Myles I also disagree. While every company is different and some may have a higher turnover rate than others, if you have a much larger than average turnover rate and you don´t know why / that is not your specific goal for whatever reason, you have a problem and its helpful to discuss this.
Apr 17, 2020 01:53
@DragandDrop: My guess is that anyone who stays longer than a year or two in this environment has given up and become part of the problem ...
Apr 17, 2020 01:53
@selectstriker2 Exit interviews are a very unreliable source of information. The recommendation what reasons to state why you are leaving are always something generic like "personal / professional development goals doesn't fit the current employment anymore" as not to burn bridges. You cant expect the people who already left to help you fix your problems. Better to concentrate on those who still are there and ask them what needs to change.
Apr 17, 2020 01:53
@JoeStrazzere anyways it´s sad. While the market is starving for good good developers there are company's out there that unnecessarily burn trough dozens of them at a time while keeping everyone involved unhappy ...
Apr 17, 2020 01:53
@JoeStrazzere could be, I don´t think its entirely clear formulated. Hence I put the "If you really mean " in my answer. Strange use of the word turnover for a HR person, if they don´t meant that. Maybe OP can clarify?
Apr 17, 2020 01:53
@JoeStrazzere 35/25= 140% meaning 140% of your staff has to be replaced during a 12 month period or an average working duration of 8.57 month

Apr 12, 2020 09:55
How is this "sit out the non compete" thing going. Are you on gardening leave, getting paid by the old employer? Are you not getting paid at all?
