@pojo-guy there's even evidence that some Norsemen even practiced their own sect of Islam. Incidentally, OP, that is probably the name you should go for, not Vikings. Viking was a Norse word for the people who went out and raided, most of their culture would not consider themselves Vikings

@pojo-guy where are you getting that they went as far as Oklahoma? As far as I know they never left the north-east coatline.

@BryanKrause if the deliverables were the notes and the data, then I would expect grading to be based on those items exclusively. Unless the "actor" was a faculty member with enough knowledge to grade, no reasonable student would expect them to be grading, and therefore the expectation changes. My math work certainly changed when my process was graded as well as my answer. I see this as a positive aspect of the disclosure. Again, the problem is not that the call is graded, it's that the instructor has stated that he refuses to disclose that it will be.

@BryanKrause the problem is not the content of the conversation, it's that a reasonable person could conclude that there is not a third person listening into the phone call. That, coupled with the instructor's refusal to disclose that he will be listening in rubs me the wrong way. It's not that the instructor can't grade based on the phone call, it's that he should be disclosing that he will be. In particular, it strikes me as similar to grading a math problem based on shown work without telling the student you will do so.

@MassimoOrtolano in most instances I can think of where it would be implicit that a third person might be listening in to a conversation, I think it would be entirely inappropriate for that not to be disclosed. As an example, I can think of calling one's parents at their home number (assuming they have a landline). If I were to do this, I would expect both parents to pick up the line and announce themselves. If they did not do so I would assume they were not on the line. The problem isn't that they listened in, it's that the lack of announcement implies that they are not on the line.

How is this not story-based?

@Muze I think you missed the point of biodiesel

Aug 23, 2018 18:27
I think you overcorrected - why make people in France walk all the way to Beijing? I'd say anyone in Europe, Asia or Africa should probably head to Jerusalem

Is it possible there's some material of worth in this wasteland that they can't make use of at the moment, but don't want someone else to get their hands on?

Jul 12, 2018 18:56
making minor spelling style and grammar changes on year old posts is probably not what they intended
Jul 12, 2018 18:54
no, I mean are they having their desired effects - ie incentivising helpful behavior

A: What manner of weapons and armor would be suitable for freezing conditions in the middle ages?

Hosch250To address the obvious problem about cold, have you ever gone on a walk/hike in winter (5-25 degrees F)? Simply walking with a heavy coat and boots makes you extremely hot. Add an inch of loose snow, and the heat from the effort to walk becomes incredible. Lack of heat in a moderate winter is goi...

@Gryphon ... Worldbuilding stack exchange? I was mostly joking
Jul 12, 2018 13:26
@Gryphon apparently you're creating controversy
Jul 11, 2018 18:08
@Secespitus Meant to post this comment: "That would actually only work for some ants. A girl-ant would actually sink in just about any liquid, but the other gender is boy-ant."

@Secespitus I had something else in my clipboard

If a question is asked properly, you should have no trouble answering if you have the proper knowledge because the acceptance criteria should be obvious (although I'll admit that's not always the case)

@byte96 Any or all. We don't ask about the purpose of the question, as long as it meets the rules. You can read the [help] for more information
May 9, 2018 15:07
@byte96 What's your question?

Hi!
May 9, 2018 14:41
That makes sense
May 9, 2018 14:40
And on that topic, what are the numbers next to people's names some times? eg Future Historian has 802 and earlier I was 4382

Clearly I haven't been in chat very long xD

... and before the edit, it seemed extremely broad. If you felt attacked, it is only because the rules around asking questions on this site are very specific, much more so than most places on the internet. In order to keep our site useful and high quality, we have to ensure all the questions meet our criteria before answering. It can seem rude at first, but the rules do make sense if you stay long enough. All that being said, Welcome to Worldbuilding!

This question has attracted 4 close votes. If it receives 5, it will be put on hold. I personally believe that the question you ask with the edit: "Is there any real world technology to help find a human at the bottom of the ocean?" is on topic here. Before you added that, I wasn't quite sure what your question was (can I use the giant mutant finder from X-Men? What if I picked up the entire ocean and looked underneath?) Stupid examples, but they highlight just how broad the range of possible answers is. This site is about giving specific answers to specific questions...

@mattdm only in terms of shore length - a 1d line curved through a 2d plane in such a way as to be infinite. This answer implies a 2d surface curved through a 3d space in such a way to be infinite (just a different 3rd dimension than we're used to)

It seems like it's already set here, but I think this question fits better on Skeptics

Recently in Zimbabwe a dollar wasn't even 1 to 1 with itself so keeping it exactly 1 to 1 seems very hard

You might consider putting these dragons into an 'anatomically correct' post first then ironing out the rest
May 21, 2018 18:47
Also how do the dragons fly if they can't lift their heads for more than a minute or two?

What do the poles of your planet look like? If they're free of ice then you might be able to significantly shorten your journey, assuming they can navigate the crazy weather. Or they can stop every few thousand miles on the way there sorta like the Norse
