In other news, I unsubscribed from the Computer History Museum's YouTube channel after watching the first 30 seconds of their new puff piece on Silicon Valley Bank. ... Maybe right in the middle of the scandal was ill-timed??

@Richard Yes, and he has a lot more like that but sadly they're not grouped into an album. If you click his username and then pick "recent" instead of "pinned collection" you can see a lot more variations generated from the same text prompts.

Well, it's a different sort of slapping than the thumb stuff that's used in funk. With an upright bass --playing slap-style-- you slap the strings to make a dull thud sound on all the rests on the page. So it becomes like percussion instrument at the same time. It's also used in rockabilly.
Apr 2, 2023 06:15
But yeah, it was pretty tough to do on the thick nickel strings.
Apr 2, 2023 06:14
They make special strings that make it easier. "Weed whackers" they're called.
Apr 2, 2023 06:12
Right, some other shows have been much more challenging on the bass. For The Robber Bridegroom I had to learn slap- bass and tape up my fingers every night.

It's a small local theatre. I think it seats about 200 comfortably, a little more if they're packed.

@PrinceNorthLæraðr The songs are difficult. Lots of weird-length phrases to count. But fortunately for me, it's not too challenging to play on the instrument. On lots of shows I've needed to learn new techniques, but not here.

It's a lot of fun. I think it helped that we ran out of lime juice at work. So I spent the 3 weeks before rehearsal started squeezing limes every day.
Apr 2, 2023 06:05
Upright bass. Lots of oompa-oompa
Apr 2, 2023 04:34
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Very cool. Just got home from the 3rd performance. The star of the show has to be the crazy foam wigs from our wigmaker (frequently, she's an actor but here we needed her to make wigs instead).

Sadly, the drum part isn't as interesting in this one, as compared to Superstition or Sir Duke. With those you can pretty much hear the whole song embodied the drum part, but here I'm not getting the same crystal ball effect. ^^

And even that figure is doubled on the bassoon.

We had the first band rehearsal for Into The Woods, and it was far less traumatic than I feared. The difficulty is in the odd length of phrases and rhythms that involve the whole ensemble. Nothing too technical, fortunately. In fact it's all eighth notes or slower except for one 4-note sixteenth figure.

At home when I want to sound like a bass I just hit the octave pedal. poof! it's a bass.
Mar 3, 2023 01:37
I may need to do some Simandl.
Mar 3, 2023 01:37
Happily, I've been asked to play bass in the next musical: Into The Woods. I fear this may be closer to Sweeney-level Sondheim rather than Night Music-level.

Hmm. What about giving it a feed or a bot?

I'm a mod over in coffee and computergraphics, but I can see a button to freeze/unfreeze even this room.

I think it can also just be any moderator from across the network, not just the mods on music.se

My most recent coffee-related discovery is a brand of instant coffee made in mexico called Oro which is the easiest/best I've found so far. It seems to dissolve more easily than any other instant coffee I've tried. It just slips into the water with no resistance. Nothing floats on top waiting to be stirred in.

 The Auditorium

A place to share music as you write it and other stuff like that.
Jun 27, 2023 13:22
@kargirwar I forgot to say it at first, but this is good work especially for a self-taught musician. The problems I'm pointing out are very minor details and you have almost everything looking very good already.
Jun 27, 2023 13:16
(not sure if my terminology is perfect here ^^. I'm trying to be super precise but it's at the edge of my technical vocabulary)
Jun 27, 2023 13:15
Using a quarter rest here makes it hard to quickly find the quarter note pulse in the measure, because the rest is straddling half of the second quarter note pulse and half of the third quarter note pulse.
Jun 27, 2023 13:12
Jun 27, 2023 13:11
Oh, there are some places with a quarter rest that should be written as two eighth rests instead like here:
Jun 27, 2023 12:51
Does that make sense? I'm not not sure if there's one "best" answer here. Another advantage of using just chord names is that it can make the whole piece fit onto fewer pages, so fewer page turns.
Jun 27, 2023 12:48
On the other hand, if the piano player you want is someone you already know then you can just ask them which notation they would prefer.
Jun 27, 2023 12:48
For myself, my skills are in guitar and bass, and to a much smaller extent clarinet. So if I wanted to add a piano part to a piece, I would personally keep it very simple like just chord names and let the piano player use their knowledge and skill to flesh out the details.
Jun 27, 2023 12:46
@kargirwar I think that choice will depend on a few things: Who your audience is (who you want to play the piece). How much effort you want to put into this project. And how detailed is the sound in your head that you want to reproduce.
Jun 26, 2023 02:48
Also, in lots of places there is a marking of "3:2" which could be written more simply as just "3". The ":2" part is the default value. You only need that number if it's going to be something other 2 somewhere.
Jun 26, 2023 02:46
@kargirwar At first glance, there are a few things that might be improved. For one, the key of D# minor is often considered awkward because every note of the scale is altered. If you change the key to the equivalent or enharmonic key of Eb minor, then all the notes stay the same but there are fewer altered notes so it can be easier to read.
