@RichardU it would give me insight into what kind of balance HR is looking for so that I would have a better idea of how to pitch my complaint to them. I don't believe in just going to them and saying "this isn't fair" without offering a solution. Hence why I asked if there was a better workaround for holding employees accountable for their attendance while not punishing them for staying home if they're sick.

If we have a doctor's note then yes, the absence is exempt. But there's no slack for something like a simple cold, which is contagious and limits our ability to be productive but doesn't require going to the doctor's.

I've had to sit down with them for a "written warning" when I hit two points, at which point I did voice my concerns. They gave the impression that while getting points was automatic, interpreting the points was more on a case-by-case basis and that individual situations would be taken into account when reviewing them. I don't know how they intend to determine which absences are due to actual sickness versus just wanting to take a day off. I know all of my co-workers have complained among ourselves, but I'm not sure if that company-wide resistance has made its way back to HR or not.
