I must agree that we need to "see it to believe it" that they match, because the index missing from the production explain plan as a potential index is very odd, and I'd hate to chalk it up to RDS Aurora having done something to the codebase. Also, could you show the output of SELECT @@optimizer_switch\G for both staging and production?

Have you compared the schema on production vs stage? From the explain output, it doesn't look like the WEIGHT table even takes into account an existing ndbnum index like it does in staging.

What happens if you remove the ssl- options from the client's my.cnf file (just comment them out) and connect using the middle option specified above: mysql --ssl-ca=/etc/mysql/certs/ca-cert.pem -u ssluser -h 192.168.18.128 -p (ps, you don't need to explicitly set the --ssl connection option, as it's implied by ssl-ca)

@JamesLupolt that is one of the arguments i've heard, but not something I've experienced personally...all I have experienced is a timeout after 20 minutes of a simple .count() query on an indexed field in a store of 156mil documents :) nothing scientific
