Most of my pre-2000 information so far has come from spec sheets/sales brochures on archive.org (uploaded as PDFs, as well as a handful of documents scraped from Apple.com via the Wayback Machine), but I believe I'm still missing a fair amount.

I'm going to be doing some more research soon to expand this answer further — does anyone have any suggestions for where to find data about bundled and/or preinstalled games on Mac computers, particularly pre-2000? apple.stackexchange.com/a/405406/12285

Been a while since I hung out in here 24/7… How's everyone? :)

Finally got a hat that I can line up with my icon! :D

Nothing quite like the feeling of posting a long, well-researched answer. :) sighs happily

@SB87 Does the same problem happen in a guest user account or in Safe Mode?

This question was just closed as a duplicate, but it really sounds like a different question to me... could someone who voted to close explain? apple.stackexchange.com/questions/261319

@bmike Oh, good idea! But how do I get from that to copying filenames? Would I still need to handle that part manually?
Nov 5, 2016 04:33
Is this in any way possible?
Nov 5, 2016 04:33
What I'd like to be able to do is have some program match them up by audio content, and then I want to take the filenames from the MP3s and transfer them to the matched WAVs.
Nov 5, 2016 04:32
I have a folder with 133 MP3 files, and a folder with 200+ WAV files. All of the recordings in the MP3 folder are represented in the WAV folder, plus some other recordings as well.

I need some advice:

@Edity Basically, your best bet for keeping your iPad virus-free is to keep it up to date. Besides the fact that malware is almost non-existent on iOS, considering how sandboxed everything is, an antivirus app really wouldn't be able to do much — Besides, Apple doesn't allow "antivirus" apps on the App Store anymore.
Oct 6, 2016 03:48
@Edity Jailbroken?
Dec 7, 2015 09:08
thanks, bmike :)

A: How can I use an iPad with a Retina display as an external monitor?

timothymhThe app Duet Display lets iOS devices connect to a Mac that is running at least OS 10.9. The Mac needs duet software which is a free download. It's currently available for purchase on the iOS App Store.

Hey mods, this answer from a year ago has gotten 7 upvotes in the last week. It's possible this is just a recent spike from search results or something, but I'm worried they might be from Duet Display puppet accounts.

@knzhou I haven't forgotten about you! School has been busy. Have you found any new information since we spoke?
Oct 6, 2017 22:36
Yikes! Okay, I'll finish making these test files and upload them when I'm done. We'll talk more tomorrow, presumably :)
Oct 6, 2017 22:26
I'm going to try an experiment on my end, might take a little while.
Oct 6, 2017 22:26
sure, might as well
Oct 6, 2017 22:25
You could; is there something you hope to test by doing that?
Oct 6, 2017 22:23
Does the delay seem to entirely correlate with length?
Oct 6, 2017 22:22
Is the one you sent me the shortest that makes Preview hang?
Oct 6, 2017 22:22
Ah, that would't be sufficient. I was going to propose some editing.
Oct 6, 2017 22:21
Do you have Adobe Acrobat?
Oct 6, 2017 22:20
Good point, we should try to test that.
Oct 6, 2017 22:19
Hm, okay.
Oct 6, 2017 22:19
Thank you for this interesting problem, by the way, I love troubleshooting haha :)
Oct 6, 2017 22:18
I assume you're back in your account, in normal mode?
Oct 6, 2017 22:18
Can you open Activity Monitor and see if any processes have "tex" in their name, or are otherwise TeX-related?
Oct 6, 2017 22:17
hmm
Oct 6, 2017 22:17
Oh, okay. That would be surprising if that was the issue then; Sublime packages are pretty sandboxed within Sublime Text.
Oct 6, 2017 22:15
What is its name?
Oct 6, 2017 22:15
You mentioned you made some of the PDFs yourself, so you must have a LaTeX editor of some sort?
Oct 6, 2017 22:14
Okay, progress!
Oct 6, 2017 22:07
I'll keep brainstorming; let me know if anything changes when you try those.
Oct 6, 2017 22:05
Keep in mind that for Guest mode you will need to have the file in a location that you can access from another account.
Oct 6, 2017 22:04
One way is to enable the Guest account in system preferences and log into that. This will negate any of your user settings. Another thing to try is Safe Mode, which doesn't launch any unnecessary processes when you boot/log in. You can enter Safe Mode by rebooting and holding Shift until you see the login screen.
Oct 6, 2017 22:03
For certain types of thing, yes, but I'm not sure if they would be relevant here. It's absolutely worth a try though:
Oct 6, 2017 22:02
Do you have any TeX software installed which has plugins that might be affecting Preview?
Oct 6, 2017 22:01
Still nothing for me, and I'm on exactly the same version as you.
Oct 6, 2017 21:56
Okay, what happens if you export it from Preview and open the exported PDF?
Oct 6, 2017 21:56
welcome to Ask Different, by the way :)
Oct 6, 2017 21:55
Pardon the obvious question, but have you tried rebooting? :) What is the source of these files; did they all come from the same place?
Oct 6, 2017 21:55
Hm, it's not freezing for me. What version of macOS are you running? What happens when you download a copy of the file you just uploaded and try to open it? Is the file on an internal drive?
Oct 6, 2017 21:55
Do you have a tool selected? What happens when you have no tool selected and you use the other type of selection (text vs. rectangular)? Can you upload a sample PDF that does this?

Oct 7, 2017 06:21
You beat me to it!

Feb 19, 2017 06:15
@BradThomas Referring to your claims that "adulting" can be used to mean "hard" because adulting *is* hard: If we say that chocolate is tasty, then a delicious meal could be said to be chocolate.
e.g. "Yum, that fettuccine alfredo was really chocolate!"
