The Loop

@TomJNowell The parent .htaccess has some rewrite rules, but no passwd rules.
Without the sub-directory .htaccess, a direct URL request returns the image/pdf.
With the sub-directory .htaccess, wordpress returns a html page "Sorry, could not find".
Which is weird and confusing. Eh, the fake 404 html response will do for the moment.
Nov 21, 2022 20:54
And I have no idea why I misspelled "apache". Twice.
Nov 21, 2022 20:28
I'm guessing there's some kind of redirect or rewrite to WP happening before appache serves up those images/etc .. but while before WP would see those are images and serve them up, perhaps now it is seeing the `.htaccess` file and doing something else.
(I'm probably guessing wrong as to the actual mechanics of what is happening there).
Nov 21, 2022 20:25
@TomJNowell It's an appache server. there's one specific directory I want to have the server require basic auth on. The directory only contains images, pdfs, and the like; so WP shouldn't need to get involved. I dropped a .htaccess file into the directory pointing to a .htpasswd file (but might have bungled the AuthFile path therein) .. but what is happening now is that WP is returning a "Sorry, we could not find this content" message in our site template dressing.
Nov 21, 2022 07:15
I'm trying to set up basic-auth for a given directory on a wordpress site .. but what works on a regular site doesn't seem to be working here (instead of being prompted for a password it looks like wp is handing the request) I feel like this might be a too basic question for Q&A and so was hoping someone would point me to a webpage with instructions.

One week of garbled data to untangle now.

> The meta functions expect slashed data. Yes this is nasty, but that's the unfortunate position we're in. You can pass the value through wp_slash() before passing it into this function.

stupid question: If I store with update_user_meta($id,$key,$text), should I expect get_user_meta($id,$key,true) == $text` ??
Apr 16, 2018 12:32
probably well. it's from the various reddits.
Apr 16, 2018 12:07
ah, a different kind of gif. In another community a common genre of questions pops up and the traditional answer is "please refer to the flow chart" .. and a link to i.imgur.com/EwiChyD.png

Slow internets are a pain
Apr 16, 2018 11:14
Implying .. they don't want to see any changes from yesterday they've already handled, i.e. before 2:34pm. I can however handle that filter outside of WP.

The main goal is to avoid downloading 10,000 member profiles to find the 6 that have changes .. because the main drag in that is the transfer speed of 10,000 x N KB of data.
Apr 16, 2018 11:12
(That is, the staff person in the office might say "show me all changes since I last downloaded, which was at 2:34:01 PM yesterday)
Apr 16, 2018 11:11
(when I say "dates" I actually mean "datestamps" with seconds level granularity .. but I can do grab a whole day's worth and filter out the slop offline)
Apr 16, 2018 11:09
do these buckets need to be pre-setup, or can they be made on the fly?
Apr 16, 2018 11:08
And wouldn't be "searching" them, just retrieving the full list when needed.
Apr 16, 2018 11:07
Kinda makes sense for speed reasons since those taxonomies would start with zero records and only slowly grow, rather than start at 10,000
Apr 16, 2018 11:07
If I wanted to find which of 10,000 users have changes submitted between two dates, I'd go look at a list of user ids I stashed into taxonomies when saving the data for those changes into user_meta?
Apr 16, 2018 11:03
use taxonomies as a kind of index thing to query instead of users?
Apr 16, 2018 11:02
we have 10,000 members we'll be adding as users.
some small percentage will update their member data each week/month/etc
we want to find just those members and pull down their details for processing
and not be forced to download all 10,000 to examine offline
Apr 16, 2018 11:00
uh oh.
Apr 16, 2018 10:59
We are logging user requested changes into a "changes" meta, one great big array which also have dates associated. We then want to find all users that have changes between 2 dates, which we can do if we stuff the change dates into "changes_dates" using add_user_meta instead of update_user_meta. We then want to be able to flush out old changes later on after they've been handled elsewhere.
Apr 16, 2018 10:57
oh .. no concept of "order". OK, that changes things
Apr 16, 2018 10:56
wouldn't that also delete the other visits_dates on the same date?
Apr 16, 2018 10:55
@TomJNowell ok, but if I have (say) a user_meta for "visit_dates" and another for "visit_reasons", and someone visits twice on one day for different reasons, and I know (somehow) it's the 5th entry in the list .. how do I delete just that 5th entry from both user_metas?
Apr 16, 2018 10:34
So, this is a simple "what function am I looking for " question. I hope.
Apr 16, 2018 10:34
OK, assuming that understanding is right ... how might I go about zapping an individual value at some index. Example, after 5x add_user_meta(key, value) I would see get_user_meta(key) return an array with 5 values. How would I delete (say) the 2nd and 3rd values?
Apr 16, 2018 10:31
And thus get_user_meta returns an array with multiple values, and not just everything in [0]
Apr 16, 2018 10:31
I think I understand the difference between update_user_meta() and add_user_meta(), in that the former always affects user_meta[key][0], while the latter instead adds the new value into user_meta[key][+1].
Apr 16, 2018 10:29
Can I ask a simple question my google-fu is failing me here?

Lousy weapon, man-sized vs man-sized. Stupid clumsy polearm, or suicidal ankle-slasher.
Dec 29, 2017 09:47
Giants don't need to worry about someone poking them in the chest/head/arms because, y'know, tall.
Dec 29, 2017 09:46
A scythe isn't usually used as a weapon, because (a) it leaves your arms/torse exposed as very difficult to parry etc, and (b) opponents can usually move about as much as you could reach, so at best an awkward area-denial.
Dec 29, 2017 09:45
Then I won with: a scythe. A mutha-heckin giant scythe. Snicker-snak there goes a dozen heads, swish a platoon are now footloose and fancy free (and screaming on the ground).
Dec 29, 2017 09:44
A brief diversion as we imagined a giant, stomping about the battlefield, with no weapon in hand ... but a giant lute instead. He's a bard. He's big in Cleveland. Big everywhere actually.
Dec 29, 2017 09:43
There was also discussion about what weapon a giant might use on a battlefield.

The usual were trotted out: giant hammers, giant spears, giant clubs.
Interesting ideas were added: iron-bound boots with shields strapped to ankles
Dec 29, 2017 09:37
The outraged and insulted orc captain followed, and suffered an AoO from the barbarian. The bard had successfully converted his puny attack action (d6 dmg, -1 to hit) into a devastating 2d8+4 dmg with +4 to hit (magic + strength). High fives all round
Dec 29, 2017 09:35
Did a quick play-test of 2e combat with full suite of combat actions (and no stupid fumble rules). Players loved it. The puny bard, with a STR 7, charged forward, did a Called Shot, and did the ol' Zorro mark on the orc's chest. Next turn he withdrew/disengaged, making sure his movement went past the hulking great barbarian.
