Wow, still some old names in @Hennes and @JourneymanGeek!

@RonBeyer Well, they refresh/update/draw/etc, certainly, but from a users perspective shouldn't flicker
Dan
Oct 26, 2021 07:05
Might be worth just adding, for the avoidance of doubt, that they don't flicker when being viewed directly in real life

@Farhan What does stay awake mean?
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 10:11
@DanHulme Our lot seem to change their mind weekly on whether HV is a thing or not - it's currently very much not
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 10:08
@DanHulme I quite like the idea of riding through the airfield cafe shirtless, parking up the bike and just jumping into a plane still shirtless. That'd raise some eyebrows
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 10:07
@DanHulme shrug, I see all sorts go through my club
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 10:02
But honestly, are we buying this " but the fellow students often look me up and down, usually looking confused and/or disapproving."

Unless he's accidentally joined some kind of "through to ATPL" academy, you go to any field and your average GA pilot is not wearing "smarts"
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 10:00
@DanHulme Oof, I wore shorts on the weekend when fl. 2 adults in the front of a PA28 on a hot day, I don't care, I'm keeping cool!
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 09:58
And he's British aswell, I can tell you for now, there ain't no dress code on british GA fields
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 09:57
I mean, come the hell on
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 09:57
@DanHulme Oh, but now he goes flying training twice a month but isn't sure how to dress:

@DanHulme I think I'm quite sensitive to this because we had the same problem on ServerFault. Eventually you just get bored of speaking to people who clearly don't work in the industry
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 08:26
And personally, I think it makes the Stack look a little silly and childish
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 08:26
@Koyovis I think my point is that I don't think he's asking any of these questions in anything like "good faith". He's got to be straight up making some of them up
Dan
Aug 8, 2019 08:25
@fooot Because from what I can tell, they're basically a troll
Dan
Aug 7, 2019 16:21
Why are we still letting this guy ask such inane questions? He's got to be a troll at this point? He claimed to be learning to fly previously

Q: Is it right to call out out “50...40..30..RETARD” in a C172 simulator?

CloudPlaying flight simulator in a C172 (since we don't have any in my local schools) and the 'co-pilot' I fly with (only know him online) insists on calling out "50...40..30..RETARD, RETARD". I know airbus does this automatically, but it annoys me and puts me off, but he argues that we still need t...

@Federico No hard feelings :D I just realised it was a bit of a non-answer. I'd answered because the mag drop I found was only a few weeks ago, but when you responded I realised I didn't really have anything authoritative and then I remembered conversations about grounding
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:35
Cafe isn't bad at all nowadays!
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:35
@Jamiec Obviously I'm biased, but in reality if you've not done Gloucester go there instead as it's such a cool airport - proper regional job
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:33
Just north of Gloucester in flying terms
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:33
That's the one - EGBO
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:31
@Jamiec Yeah, ,we're a bit spoiled at Halfpenny Green as it's got the old A Triangle
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:30
@Jamiec Never been to Elstree, though oddly I spent months staying in the Village Hotel down the road on a project many years ago
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:30
@Jamiec Halfpenny Green for me
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:13
It was an amusingly timed question as I'm pretty sure I tipped over the demonstrated PA28 limit a couple of weeks back, not one of my more relaxed landings
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 12:11
@Jamiec Same - where do you fly from btw?
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 10:56
A substantial amount of his questions add really very very little to the site
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 10:55
One minute he's terrified of everything aviation, the next minute he's learning microlights and now he's wanting to bust crosswind limits in a Tomahawk
Dan
Nov 15, 2018 10:55
Is there a particular reason Cloud is just allowed to keep posting bullcrap?
Dan

@RoryAlsop Similar here, loved aviation for literally as long as I can remember

What I will say is your manager's position is common in the UK, and would appear to meet our and EU legislative requirements. Note a planned appointment to a Doctor is very different to, say, recuperating from an operation
Dan
May 12, 2020 13:01
@hb20007Why does it matter if it exists somewhere? Companies have wildly different policies, and they all need to conform to the relative legislation. Even single companies may have different policies for different geographic regions. The only thing that matters to you is if your company policy complies with the relevant law. The rest of the question seems broadly immaterial

@Frank Having spent 10 years in consultancy, working closely with dozens and dozens of organisations globally I'm telling you that it's your world view that is whack. You have a bizarre and confused view of business and their needs. This isn't to say HR is your friend or their to protect you, but you're getting bent out of shape over distinctions that simply don't exist in most places.
Dan
Apr 24, 2020 16:50
@Frank Personnel is synonymous with HR. I don't know if there's a language problem, but you're talking about a difference that simply doesn't exist. Although to be honest, I suspect you're just outright trolling. Every company of a certain size needs some form of people management, somebody to manage contracts, legal requirements and employee issues. What you call it is immaterial.
Dan
Apr 24, 2020 16:50
@Frank You appear to be woefully misinformed about how companies operate.
Dan
Apr 24, 2020 16:50
@Frank Most large companies will have some form of HR function - what they're currently branded as or calling themselves is largely immaterial. Your comment is silly.

Dan

"You are wrong because even after your manager clarified things for you, you seem to hold onto your own understanding and not accept the clarification." Managers aren't some all knowing entity that must be obeyed no matter what - this goes doubly so for matters of legal. It's fine to get confirmation and shift the liability, but OP isn't wrong for "holding on to their understanding" of something

And I still maintain that asking somebody to perform is a world away from partaking in near enough any activity
Dan
Dec 18, 2019 15:12
@TymoteuszPaul The difference is they simply don't have to engage, and I disagree with anybody or any company that makes them de-facto mandatory through pressure or whatever. Yes, obviously, OP doesn't have to do it on pain of death but they clearly don't want to do so. If OP had posted "I really want to do this show that my firm are doing - should I" I'd be answering "Absolutely, what a great opportunity to get to know your team and colleagues. Go for it"
Dan
Dec 18, 2019 15:01
@TymoteuszPaul That's deliberately disingenuous. As it happens, I'm a huge fan of team socialising and building - but it needs to be done on terms people are happy with. Going out for a drink, or doing something optional such as paintball, karting or whatever or even encouraging people to personalise their workspace - yeah, that's fine, encouraged and excellent for business. Forcing people to dance or take part in non-work activities that they don't want to do is a long long way from that
Dan
Dec 18, 2019 14:12
@Erik Exactly, it's just not on. I've been to lots of companies where the occasional e-mail goes out offering all kinds of weird and wonderful opportunities for people to do stuff. Some of them sound fun to me, some of them sound worse than work. If people want to put a little employee show on, that's cool - to make it de-facto compulsory is out of order. @Ruadhan2300 Cheers!
Dan
Dec 18, 2019 14:08
@TymoteuszPaul I disagree completely with everything you're saying here. Expecting employees to dance and to perform is not normal, it's not like a team building event, it's not like introducing yourself. Most adults will not want to dance or perform on stage - I'd go as far as to say most adults simply don't have the skills or inclination to do so. And to compare it to a presentation, a standard business practice, is absurd.
Dan
Dec 18, 2019 14:06
I go to work to work, not to be "put out of my comfort zone" or dance, or entertain people or whatever crap they make up

@Bilkokuya It's hard to say whether you're right or wrong regarding it being career limiting, but I think a genuinely important skill is to be able to present yourself and act in such a way that others don't feel they can bully you into this kind of nonsense. I have to say, I've worked at a LOT of organisations (I mean a lot) and I've never heard something so ridiculous as this request.

Dan
Oct 19, 2018 22:53
@th3no0b Why are you so convinced that this stuff should be included in your contract? A contract isn't some hard line document that can you never deviate from - it's impossible to list all parts of a role. Do you feel you could opt-out of an important company wide meeting? Do you feel you could opt-out of a Health & Safety brief because it wasn't written in your contract? All Contracts (especially British ones) have a a huge element of 'reasonableness' - most people wouldn't consider being asked to attend a social function, during the day, while being paid to be an unreasonable request.

Dan
Oct 18, 2018 16:07
@th3no0b Social interaction is a KEY component of work, business and furthering your career. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that getting along with people is more important than anything else (Trust me, you have to be really good for people to put up with a bad attitude for long). You're not only creating a conflict where there doesn't need to be one, but you're also actively sabotaging your relationships and career
