Interesting situation. Maybe the eSIM got corrupted and impacted the location detection? The overall picture is rather vague though.

PSA: Merged the cifs tag into . cifs was only used on 8 questions, and 7 of them already had as a tag as well.

@PatMyron Please be aware that not all the rules valid on SO transfer 1:1 to AD. One of the differences you already learned about is that we are more relaxed as far as verbosity of posts is concerned. AD and its users are way less technical than the typical SO user.

That model can be upgraded all the way up to Sequoia.

I had to disable 1Blocker first to see what you are talking about. Ouch.

@bmike „talk like a bird“ day?

@Tetsujin Wonder if the NVRAM approach could be used to install other operating systems via Recovery as well?
Feb 3, 2024 16:06
If you look for a way to use the keyboard to edit the path/directory shown in the top Finder window, add a new, specific question. It might help to also list the constraints you are facing (e.g. are you allowed to install new software) because some of the things you seem to be looking for won't work out of the box.
Feb 3, 2024 16:05
@paul23 I can only add to the explanations bmike already has given. The existing question is rather broad, so people read it as "how can I use the keyboard in Finder so I don't have to rely on the mouse" and answer it accordingly.

I have no idea. Technically it isn‘t spam, maybe they are just fooling around.
Aug 2, 2023 18:17
@Tetsujin Yeah, didn‘t see any value in keeping them. Removed some of the previous occurrences as well.

it‘s amazing how many Anthony Jacksons out there seem to have similar AppleID problems :-)

@MartinSleziak thanks
Jul 29, 2023 08:16
Let's find out then.
Jul 29, 2023 08:13
@MartinSleziak I know, but shouldn't the Generic Bot take care of this?
Jul 29, 2023 08:11
@MartinSleziak The room is automatically feed with any AD question which becomes a Hot Network Question :-)

@MartinSleziak Fixed, thanks for bringing it up.

If you copy a PDF to the place where the scanned images are, open it in Preview and modify it (e.g. rotate a page): can you save it?
Mar 28 23:59
@red_menace I see the auto-quarantining both in the standard directories (Downloads, Pictures) and in some I created myself. But I don't think the quaranting is the issue here, something else is preventing the saving of these files.
Mar 28 23:59
So, IMHO, the question is why saving doesn't work for you. In which directory are you trying to save?
Mar 28 23:59
Ok, tested it myself: Preview indeed adds a quarantine attribute when opening a file. But I didn't have a problem with saving a scanned image.

What does type awk return, both directly on the command line and as part of the function?

Jul 23, 2024 22:16
As interesting as it might be, I don‘t have time to do any research on this right now. But I stumbled across a link yesterday which might be interesting from a historical point of view, and also is slightly related to the topic: danq.me/2024/07/21/ascii

What I intended to point out is that answers are usuall better-received if the poster doesn’t state their opinions as facts. But it‘s your answer at the end.
Jul 23, 2024 05:16
I try to avoid making such statements if I can‘t support them with a reference. In the specific case, I can think of several reasons why macOS (OSX) uses case-insensitive filesystems, but I don‘t have a reference for any of them.
Jul 23, 2024 05:16
We prefer answers to be based on facts and not on opinions, fact-based answers are usually also better received by the community.
Jul 23, 2024 05:16
Not sure playing with words will get us anywhere :-) What is the source for the statement „case insensitive filesystems were created to help people who might experience problems with the use of uppercase“?
Jul 23, 2024 05:16
This is the claim I was referring to, taken from the footnote in your answer: „case insensitive filesystems were created to help people who might experience problems with the use of uppercase.“
Jul 23, 2024 05:16
Do you have a reference for the claim that case-insensitive filesystems have been created for people who might experience problems with the use of uppercase?

@jsx97 Mike pointed out a few issues with the question as currently written, and gave some ideas on how it could be improved. Can you try to revise the question with an edit?

Why do you need TestFlight to test your own application? Can‘t you just copy the compiled binary to the VM and run it? The same should work for applications from the Store (even if I don‘t really see a reason to run those on an old version). I agree that iCloud testing won’t be possible, but the rest will work.
Feb 12, 2024 06:04
TestFlight you can do on your main OS, you don’t need to use older versions for this. if your app uses iCloud, this might be an issue.
Feb 12, 2024 06:04
Why do you need to log in via AppleId to test your software?
Feb 12, 2024 06:04
Why should it? You already got a newer version out of the box, Apple doesn’t backport drivers etc. to older version of macOS.
Feb 12, 2024 06:04
The Apple page is a bit misleading (there are several MBP 2023 models, and the M3 was released late in 2023). You usually can‘t downgrade to a version of macOS version which is older than the hardware.

Nov 24, 2023 18:03
I partially agree with the grumbles. Both the size of the question and your reluctance to try the things proposed make it difficult to actually recommend something. Analyzing such issues involves a lot of trial and error, starting from a clean system (new install of macOS only, and one monitor) is essential if you want to isolate the issue.
Nov 24, 2023 18:03
Also, based on the first part of the description, the fact that it occured with a new Mac and does not depend on the version of macOS, there are already a lot of things pointing towards a hardware issue. Which kind of makes it obvious what the next step should be.
Nov 24, 2023 18:03
This is the first time you mention three monitors which just shows that debugging such issues without access to the hardware is extremely difficult. Sorry to say, but with all the support you got from Apple Care already and in the comments above, you might have run out of magic bullets.
Nov 24, 2023 18:03
In the first paragraph you mention that the issues start a few hours after a reboot. I agree, it’s a pain (that‘s why I would ask for a HW replacement), but a few hours sound less worrisome than days on end.
Nov 24, 2023 18:03
Also, when Apple asked you to not install any third party apps, they want to reduce the potential causes. So reinstall just the OS and try to reproduce the error. If you can, you (and Apple) learnt something about the issue.
Nov 24, 2023 18:03
If it started as soon as you got the Mac Pro, a hardware issue might indeed be the cause. Do you have the option to bring it back to Apple and have it analyzed/fixed under warranty?

To be more specific: please provide a complete set of commands so others can reproduce the problem. Right now we just see how the command was build, but we don’t know the value of self.
Jul 25, 2023 20:25
Can you please add the exact command you used to create the value?
Jul 25, 2023 20:25
Your python commands seem wrong, defaults read does not create/update anything. Can you please add the exact command (doesn’t matter if it was bash, zsh, python) you run to create the value?
