"I fear I am not being taken seriously because of my status as a student, and I cannot quit because my contract here is part of getting my diploma." Do you have a college/uni supervisor you can discuss this with? If you feel unsafe then the college surely can't expect you to remain in place.

@TheSnarkKnight makes more sense when viewed in the context of assumed income for tax purposes. How do you know when someone is in a role that deserves a tip or not? Or is just an assumption based on what are probably low paid jobs?

@TheSnarkKnight I just expressed my surprise that the tipping culture is quite so ingrained into the way things are done in the US (I'm in UK).
Someone should be paid for doing a job, that's not my concern how much or how little.

If someone goes above and beyond, yes I would probably give a tip to some people working in some jobs (hair dressers including - though some are earning good money).

I was just expressing surprise that it is so ingrained that to not tip is considered theft. Rather than the UK view that a tip is recognition of particularly good service. Not paying a workers base w
