Just to add, I'm from the Western US, and I've never heard the phrase

and I don't know about the forces involved in spinning objects within the tornado, but is the cow picked up and thrown, or does it literally rotate around the tornado's axis?

@Tristan While we do often refer to "brown gravy", that is usually only to distinguish it from other gravies like "white gravy" which is what you are describing. Also, if it is a generic powder mix as opposed to actual thickened broth or stock, "brown gravy" is appropriate to distinguish it from actual roast beef gravy, or lamb gravy, etc

Console "users" do tend to be called "players" or more recently "gamers", so I think having a domain-specific customer name at least has precedent, if it isn't totally common.

What about wholphins! Why isn't anyone talking about wholphins?! ;)

If an AI can pass a Turing test, it's not a valid Turing test, right? I mean, isn't that the point?

Just to make sure it is said....Don't do this!

You ever see Debbie Downer sketches on SNL?

The question is invalid as the OP is asking why hotels without kitchens don't offer kitchens. And if his "grandparents" really wanted to grill a piece of fish and/or totally-non-Hawaiian Okinawan sweet potato, the Four Seasons - Maui offers many public outdoor grills

@PeterVandivier Having people misunderstand you, or skeptically trying to get at your underlying question is hardly a flame war. I'm sorry if my comment sounded like a "flame". I was just trying to clarify your question (which is part of what comments are for). We've all seen too many questions which are designed just to make a point or to literally incite an argument, so hopefully you will understand when we are immediately skeptical of questions which start with a questionable premise, especially when the OP rejects any attempts at a frame-challenge.

@NKCampbell Actually, it was Nolimon who made the original observation, I was just agreeing with Nolimon!
Nov 8, 2018 22:57
Okay. I'm sorry, I misunderstood your question. It looks like Valorum got at what you're actually asking, which is about whether sleight-of-hand artists even exist in Middle-Earth.

@PeterVandivier I don't think it's an idiom. Are you maybe coming at this from a second-language perspective and assuming it's an idiom just because you haven't heard the phrase? I'm pretty sure it means exactly what it says on the surface. Gandalf is saying he is not a magician who does cheap tricks (which Nolimon mentions, is how the Hobbits may see him based on his performance so far), but is an actual practicer of Magic™ as Bilbo should know full well from his previous experience (in The Hobbit)

I think you're reading too much into it. What about the phrase implies to you that Gandalf is using a "common reference" and not just being descriptive?

Kimono aside, these are all common terms in Hawaii, and if you ask for any of them, a salesperson will understand that you wish to cover up (for modestly, warmth, or fashion) and show you a wide array of cover-ups, from thin, whispy scarves to easy pullover dresses.

I'm a bit late to this, but I feel I just have to add my two cents...I'm pretty sure that Tolkien didn't believe in doing evil to achieve good (the "ends justify the means" argument), and so he would never have a mostly-"good" character kill a mostly-"good" character to avert evil. To wit, I would say that it was out-of-character for Elrond to do anything to hurt Isildur, letting aside any conscious decision he may have made.

And @Valorum mentions this, but they fire a freaking RPG! I think the police would arrest first and ask questions later in that case!

@EricLippert I'd guess it was Michael Collins in the Lunar Command Module Columbia.
