@JoeStrazzere Sure, good point. I suppose saying "Resistance is Futile" would not really help at this point. But, it is futile, because change is in the wind. A hard rain is gonna fall. Etc. I was thinking that someone would want to be ahead of the game. In front of the curve. NOT. Message received :-)

@JoeStrazzere "Good Enough" is about to change abruptly. I hope the "web version IS better", because all our work is shifting to a web version. I was trying to slide some change under the door before that happened.
Dec 19, 2020 15:55
@AaronF Unfortunately, this has been The Year of Living Dangerously when it comes to working closely with people, but I will get out there when I can. I'll try suggesting things through email for now though. .

@DanielR.Collins interesting story, I don't quite understand, but it helps me. Personally, I use apps on my phone only when forced to, and hardly use a browser on my phone because it is not worth it. Having lots of apps seems to me like how people used to have 20 different credit cards, back before Visa / MC become popular. Why would I want 20 different apps when I can have one browser? In fact, even 4 major credit cards is a hassle, someone always doesn't take my particular card. We have one electric company, one water company, one cable company... let's have one browser instead of apps.

@JoeStrazzere I do get some direction, and I also propose the things that I decide to do on my own initiative. Either way, there is just not much bandwidth for feedback at this point. Other priorities are looming. After those changes, maybe...

These drugs are very unpredictable and have damaging results for many. Should people be free to take them? Known dangerous substances can't be made legal. Alcohol was an exception because it was already so prevalent.

I don't know about you, but I don't exist at all.

@SankhaKulathantille Agreed. My last comment on this, lest it become a discussion: as I see it there are only "two real things" - The Void and Experience. Yet, they are one thing. But, that is the nondual perspective, not exactly Buddhism, as best I understand.
Mar 4, 2018 14:34
My stance on knowledge is that it is partial, unreliable, and largely a hindrance. Best to let that go also. Cheers!
Mar 4, 2018 14:34
@SankhaKulathantille Science has a defined, particular purpose, we cannot expect it to do everything. However, do two or more people tend to agree on the content of past life memories? My four past lives for example: I don't know anyone else who remembers any, let alone ones that agree with mine. So I take it as something without validity for determining how to respond to life as it is for me today. I no longer either believe nor disbelieve in past lives, as it has no impact on my life. My stance toward belief is that if it does not clearly lead to knowledge, it is a hindrance.
Mar 4, 2018 14:34
@SankhaKulathantille useful scientific theories require evidence that most or all people would agree on (given sufficient background knowledge) and, as best I know, there is no evidence for rebirth. Can you direct me to some?
Mar 4, 2018 14:34
I read The Dancing Wu Li Masters quite a while back. It now seems to me to be written from a nondual perspective, now that I know what that is, but I would have to look again. Gary Zukav has written other books more recently with a more elaborated perspective.

@ste. Yes! Why just the other day, I unfried an egg. Several times. Wait, that was my brain, on drugs.

@MarkRogers maybe the idea of anti-patterns is an anti-pattern? That would be about right.
Dec 1, 2017 13:34
Why bother to write a list of directions for how to drive from one place to another? Why not just create a railroad car and a track to go directly there? Work... Grocery store... Clothing store... Grandma's house... Instead of telling my brother how to drive to my house for Christmas, build him a custom vehicle that goes from his house to mine. Perfect! The reason that we write code is to generate code. Discard the idea that there is a 'computer' that runs the code, there is just another layer below that is interpreting. "It's Turtles all the way down!"

Analog TV could thus transmit an infinite amount of information, or an infinite amount of noise, you might say.

Sep 24, 2017 23:32
@T.E.D. so, raise the average. If the average gets to 100%, problem solved.

Sep 22, 2017 08:50
@jamesqf they can come in and close the company even if you have been successful. Success guarantees absolutely nothing. Nothing guarantees anything, actually. That is probably why people often just do the minimum and are sloppy.

Technical Debt happens when you overspend your Credit card. Then it gets Interesting.

@Buffy Deleted my comment under your Answer, if that is what you mean. I guess, in the big scheme of things, I don't really care what is taught or how or why or anything else, as long as it gets the students to having work and being able to develop in that. I learned all kinds of useless stuff, and probably wasted half a lifetime in school, but here I am. However, I have previously stated that I will not use SE chat because it is permanent, so I only replied out of respect for you. Ciao!

I remember n college psych class, the insanity defense idea, I said that anyone who would deliberately cause harm is insane. Prof agreed but said not everyone else does.
Aug 24, 2017 12:44
People all have the same basic needs. If we can get beyond this scarcity / competition thing, and get beyond the glamour / status / power ting, it would work fine. Is this a religious issue, or a psychological one?
Aug 24, 2017 12:42
Are we back to that jobs thing?
Aug 24, 2017 12:42
The purpose being?
Aug 24, 2017 12:40
Here's an idea: just have one big union, with everyone on earth in it. And one big company. Done.
Aug 24, 2017 12:39
Nonduality is more fun.
Aug 24, 2017 12:39
I don't see what unions would do for me. When I worked for a community college in another state, the union reduced my pay from $66 / hr to $44. Thank you SO much!
Aug 24, 2017 12:37
Well, Nonduality would make all problems go away.
Aug 24, 2017 12:37
He would have hated me, I ran a charitable (501c3) retreat center for a decade. Yeah, we were so trying to keep people dependent on us.
Aug 24, 2017 12:35
What other ways can people have a middle class lifestyle? Was talking with fiancee about the huge amount of wasted effort keeping track of money. Just get rid of it.
Aug 24, 2017 12:33
This connects with my idea about things like health care - it doesn't make sense for it to be for-profit, because illness is something we don't want and are trying to eradicate. Profit results from productivity, and so there is no way to measure that in health care, or other caring fields either. Day care? Hey! Get out there and change more diapers! Get get kids to grow up faster!
Aug 24, 2017 12:28
TIL about the 5 Industries, and now I have an answer to my question from childhood: why are factory jobs such a big deal? (I worked on an assembly line for half a year about 15 years ago, so I know something about it.)

"Cause it's easy as fishin you can be a technician, if you can make apps that are mellow. People see you havin fun, just a coding on the Sun. Tell them that you like it this way. It's the work that we avoid and we're all self-employed: we love to work at nothing all day!"

@TuringTux thank you for the info. I find that I can waste a lot of time "on the interwebs" and so I tend to focus on just one hammer, er, site. For 3 years that has mostly been something on SE. The interest to annoys ratio is best here, but I still don't always get with the program.
Aug 23, 2017 12:45
The blog I follow is a woman who teaches English in South Korea. At work I follow CodingHorror, of course. That's the only one there. Work usage is entirely different. This sit is be only thing that crosses the line, and so it becomes a potential reat to my continued employment. In my opinion. Stupid t and h... Im not going to fix it.
Aug 23, 2017 12:40
I don't use twitter. Quora looked like a heap when I looked in to it. Really, I would like to meet people in person, but Meetup is not being too useful there.
Aug 23, 2017 12:38
I don't know what a subreddit is. Really, I only devote my very carefully chosen online time to one or two pursuits. For example, I follow two blogs, but one stopped a couple years ago, and one posts like 5x a year. This is the only SE site I spend any time on now. I don't just wander the web because of all the disreputable and dangerous stuff. Am using this silly tablet because my laptop with the real usage (banking etc) is carefully guarded and not much used.
Aug 23, 2017 12:34
@GypsySpellweaver my point was that SE already had developed a blogging method, but they decided to withdraw or disapprove it for all sites when we could have used it. Why waste time to redevelop it elsewhere when it already exists and is integrated with SE? "Dumb."

I was so thinking that one of my old Qs became active again. Oh well.
Aug 23, 2017 12:28
Oh. Would I want some? Would it help with teaching database normalization? SQL, meet XTC...
Aug 23, 2017 12:27
But some letters like t and h don't type reliably. And I am always putting n's and b's between words.
Aug 23, 2017 12:25
Figured out that I can see the hover text on xkcd also, I was so happy.
Aug 23, 2017 12:24
What did the answer say? Was it interesting?
Aug 23, 2017 12:24
I typically favorite everything that I would upvote. "It's like, one more, you see?" First thing I do with my own Qs, of course, because I can.
Aug 23, 2017 12:22
Had this tablet for about two years before I could figure out cut and paste.

Q: How can I make database normalization more clear?

no comprendeDatabase normalization is needlessly clouded by over-explanation. I reviewed a wide array of web articles and several textbooks before starting to teach it. After I became thoroughly familiar with the point of it in my own terms and then understood the rules, I reduced the rules down to this list...

Comments got caught on the red herring of 'theory'. I think the real issue is that you have some students with ability who have not hit the limits of their current knowledge - yet. As soon as they do, they will either bail, or decide to learn more. People only learn what they need to or find interesting. Wait for one or the other horn to catch them up.
