@PolyGeo A meta discussion sounds fine to me.

Q: Graduation, site closure, and a clearer outlook on SE site health

AnaBack in April of 2010, Joel shared our assumptions about the role of small sites in the newly minted Stack Exchange network: If a site does not have enough activity at the end of 90 days, it will be closed down. Any existing Q&A will be archived and made available for download, but the site...

Q: What does the word "née" mean when following a woman's name?

JustinYFor the first time today I have seen the word née following a woman's name. It's often in parenthesis and precedes what appears to be another surname. I'm guessing it's a way of signifying a woman's maiden name, but the notation is very foreign to me. What exactly does it mean? Why is it used to ...

I just got a "Popular Question" badge for my question with a score of -1.

@JanMurphy Thanks Jan!

Hopefully we'll be able to load data for metropolitan counties very soon and fix those errors.
Feb 2, 2014 02:46
Regarding the incorrect results, it's because we just realized yesterday that metropolitan counties in the UK are different than regular counties, so we haven't loaded data for them into our system. So when our system sees "West Yorkshire, England" and can't match it to any place, it cuts off "West Yorkshire" and just matches "England".

@JanMurphy Thanks for the feedback on Find-A-Record. I'm especially glad to hear that you like the UI.
Aug 8, 2013 16:29
@MartinSojka I'm betting your site is just not at the front of the queue yet for processing.
Aug 8, 2013 15:13
@MartinSojka Have you ever had any record matches? It might just be that they haven't gotten around to processing your tree yet. It takes a significant amount of time for them to process matches and took a while for any to appear on my tree.

BTW, are you guys aware of #genchat? conferencekeeper.net/genchat.html
Aug 6, 2013 16:02
@AmericanLuke it would be better for me, but I'm just one person
Aug 6, 2013 15:42
Since I work in the genealogy industry, I'm unlikely to participate unless the chat occurs during work hours

I still don't have enough rep to do it
Jun 12, 2013 03:05
Could someone with enough rep or the mods create the tag synonyms suggested here: meta.genealogy.stackexchange.com/a/1468/47

@CanadianGirlScout I received a Famous Question badge on tex.se for a question with one vote.
Apr 22, 2013 19:16
@Luke they don't send spam as far as I know. I'm pretty sure you have to opt-in to any emails
Apr 22, 2013 19:16
@Luke they must have turned that off recently. These recent changes sure have made it hard to give feedback.
Apr 22, 2013 18:49
@Luke really? Bummer. It works every time for me. Have you tried reporting the problem? getsatisfaction.com/familysearch/problems/common
Apr 22, 2013 14:16
@Luke delete your cookies. That should fix the problem with FamilySearch.

@ColeValleyGirl Wouldn't it be nice to have a website where you could submit a lookup request and any available volunteer could, whether in an FHC or from home, could work on it for/with you?
Jan 21, 2013 20:45
@JustinY I didn't realize 4 other users also earned the Fanatic badge. Looks like 5 people need something else to do ;)
Jan 19, 2013 17:39
From what I can tell (I haven't participated in all of the discussions around this) we have generally accepted that subjective questions are okay.
Jan 19, 2013 17:37
@ColeValleyGirl I feel like we have come to a consensus on subjective questions.
Jan 19, 2013 16:48
At least offer your opinion on the first section, What kind of questions can I ask here?. That's the most critical one.
Jan 19, 2013 16:47
We really need people to vote or offer their opinions on the three FAQ sections that @ColeValleyGirl has offered us. Six people have voted up the question, but only two have voted on the answers.

Q: Content for the main site FAQ first block (What kind of questions can I ask here)?

ColeValleyGirlI propose we start substantive work on populating the important first block of our FAQ: What kind of questions can I ask here? The section will no doubt evolve and change as our community does, but it's totally bare at present and not enormously helpful. Based on the discussions we've already ha...

@Fortiter Congrats on the Fanatic badge. You've been a key part of this community.
Dec 16, 2012 01:50
@AdrianB38 You've made some excellent contributions to the community. How did you find us? I visited your family history site. I've thought about setting up a similar one for myself. How do you like it?
Dec 10, 2012 21:21
@Luke did you know that you can retag a question without editing the content? There is a "retag" link near the edit, close, flag, etc links.
Dec 10, 2012 19:45
@GeneJ Oh, I didn't know that. How are they different?
Dec 8, 2012 20:15
@GeneJ I've been thinking about posting on RootsDev about this. I tried once near the beginning but I didn't approach it the best way.
Dec 8, 2012 18:31
You may have noticed in discussion on RootsDev that I'm not so concerned about making tools for professionals. I want to make genealogy easy and enjoyable for the average person. It's happening. Not as quick as I would like, but quick enough. It's exciting.

My passion if for my family and to help others learn about their family. I want to make genealogy accessible to the general public. I want to lower the barrier to entry.
Dec 8, 2012 18:27
Then I got involved with the 20 Minute Genealogist (twenty.byu.edu). That was a critical mentoring experience for me.
Dec 8, 2012 18:27
My interest in genealogy kicked into high gear. I began trying to learn about his family and military career. I saw how hard it was to do genealogy. Being a CS major, it was natural to detect inefficiencies and dream of solutions.

In Jan 2009 I returned to school at BYU to continue studying Computer Science after being in Chile for two years. My paternal grandfather's health was declining rapidly. He lived near BYU so I visited with him often during the next two months until he died. I did my best to learn about his life. He told me things that my own father didn't know. But he still took a lot of stories with him to his grave.
Dec 8, 2012 18:22
Then in early 2007 my maternal grandfather died. I knew less about him. I thought it was such a shame that I was alive for 20 years while he was yet all I knew was that he was a good man -- but at least I knew that!
Dec 8, 2012 18:21
@GeneJ Both of my parents had a copy of their genealogy in the old wide notebooks. I remember being fascinated by them even at a young age. I think it's because I always enjoyed puzzles. I tried to digitize them in Excel once; I must have been 10 - 12 when I did that. As I grew older I realized that I didn't know anything about my grandparents. I knew my paternal grandfather was a retired Colonel from the USAF, but even then I didn't know what he did.
Dec 7, 2012 23:59
@GeneJ I am consistently impressed with your wealth of knowledge. What's your background? How long have you been doing genealogy?
Nov 19, 2012 16:31
@GeneJ Have you noticed that you have an 8% acceptance rate? That's not necessarily bad. Why have you only accepted one answer from your 14 questions? They are tough questions, so it's okay if they're never answered.
Nov 19, 2012 16:29
@lkessler Thanks! I can never remember the name, and now that the original proposal has been officially deleted, I lost my one sure way of finding it. I should just bookmark it, but then I never actually look at my bookmarks...
Nov 19, 2012 14:42
Do you remember the name of the website?
Nov 19, 2012 14:42
@lkessler The previous genealogy.se proposal that didn't make it was started by a man who created a website where people can pay registered genealogists to do small research tasks for them a la RAOGK.
