@Laurel that depends on whether there are more people here or not. I'm happy to, but it takes more than just me talking to myself.
Jan 10, 2024 20:09
@Morco, it's not very active, but at one point in the past it was.
Apr 13, 2023 23:07
I'm going to try and hang around in this chat room more often to hopefully get back to the days when it was quite active.
Mar 23, 2019 09:26
@forest Indeed. But sometimes it's not about what's intuitive, but rather about what's faster to do for a trained individual. Not all interfaces should be designed to be "simple" if "simple" reduces some other critical attribute.

Sort of like a physical HAM radio in many ways.
Mar 14, 2019 13:09
@forest They did make a decision. They decided to only have one screen with every interface on that one screen :)
Feb 21, 2019 09:08
Preferences usually apply to a what a given user would prefer, and are rarely changed. E.g. Should a new browser tab be blank or open my favourite page?
Feb 21, 2019 09:07
Options are optional settings that apply to a subset of settings. E.g. in the text settings, what are the colour options.
Feb 21, 2019 09:06
Settings, are some settings for an action which may not apply to an entire program. E.g. What are the server settings.
Feb 21, 2019 09:05
Generally "properties" are the properties of a selectable object. E.g. text properties.
Feb 21, 2019 09:05
@NickAlexeev There are definitely differences, but they depend on the platform or context.
Jun 9, 2017 09:16
Although your edit did about as good a job as possible to try and rescue it.
Jun 9, 2017 09:14
@plainclothes I don't see a reason for reopening the question. Would you mind explaining why you believe it's on topic?
May 13, 2017 15:47
@Ashes Migrated to SO
May 12, 2017 13:05
It's there in low quality in the image, but it should be selectable so someone can copy-paste into a text editor.
May 12, 2017 13:05
@Ashes You need to add the code that you're using for someone to really comment.
May 12, 2017 07:30
If you improve the question to make what you want clear (in words), I'll migrate it to StackOverflow for you. Just ping me once you've done it.
May 12, 2017 07:29
It's on topic for Stack Overflow, not for ux.StackExchange.
May 12, 2017 07:29
@Ashes You won't get much response as your question is off topic.
May 11, 2017 17:53
@Ashes For CSS help, it's better to post in StackOverflow as this is for general UX, not implementation of UX.
Apr 27, 2017 21:49
It depends, but generally not as active as it has been in the past.
Mar 8, 2017 05:43
No problem.
Mar 8, 2017 05:39
@Monomeeth The way that I read it, it's really a request for a search. I don't see any underlying UX question being posed, so it's more a question for the Quora format.
Mar 8, 2017 04:37
@Monomeeth No, that would be closed here. The op is asking for resources, not a question that can be objectively answered. Google is usually better for that.
Mar 7, 2017 10:24
Wires are typically coloured for what they are, not the input or output. So you may have yellow=video, or red=positive. In general this is because in principle communication on a wire is bi-directional.
Mar 7, 2017 10:22
@NickAlexeev Nothing that I'm aware of, and I have a degree in Electronic Engineering.
Mar 1, 2017 13:18
I don't know how people work without them.
Mar 1, 2017 13:17
I personally like windows. I currently have 8 open right now on a large screen that I work on.
Mar 1, 2017 13:17
@WilliamMariager If it's specialised software where the users will invest time into learning it, then it's not likely a problem.
Mar 1, 2017 12:06
Is that not allowed?
Mar 1, 2017 12:06
I work from home, so I get to play with tiny humans on my lunch break.
Mar 1, 2017 12:05
Lunch and tiny humans call me.
Mar 1, 2017 12:05
Sounds like it's going to be an interesting experience. The good interesting.
Mar 1, 2017 12:03
Unless you mean the other Cambridge. You know... the fake one.
Mar 1, 2017 12:03
Nice to see some self-driving car work happening in the UK.

May 4, 2023 23:11
The issue here as I see it is that you aren't posing a specific UX problem as much as a general topic and asking for literature on the topic. Had you been asking something like "For programming, what is the optimal vertical spacing?", you would be narrowing it down to an aspect. But to ask for studies that can be applied to programming, you're essentially asking the equivalent of a search query and really posing no UX problem.
May 1, 2023 22:40
I've moved the comments to chat, as it was really getting to be more of a conversation than anything else. I'll also add what I say to my kids. "Be nice".

@MichaelLai: The cookie question was only introduced through legislation, and only after the powers that be had already had the ethical debate on it. I'm not aware of any site that applied the GDPR cookie rules to improve UX, but if you have some examples, I'd be happy to learn something new.
Apr 11, 2023 20:08
Obviously that's not a great way to ask, but my intention was more laying out the changes necessary to make it a UX rather than an ethics question.
Apr 11, 2023 20:07
@Michael: If you were to phrase the question more as: "If it were a requirement to show users that the content was AI generated or would be used for AI training, what would be the best way to achieve that in XYZ specific situation?"
Apr 11, 2023 20:05
I honestly don't see that being the case here, and as much as I agree with Michael that it's something that should be dealt with and should be made explicitly clear, my reasoning behind that isn't based on UX, but based on my own ethics and philosophy.
Apr 11, 2023 20:04
Overall I can understand where the question is coming from, but it's essentially a normative question that relates to ethics. The UX side would come in if there were some rules or some clear UX benefit to highlighting the data use outside of any legal requirement.

@RouxMartin It's part of the "job" so to speak. However many people look at UX as "an opinion", and generally because many people come to UX from design fields where everyone's opinion is equally valid, they are used to the paradigm of talking about opinonr rather than measurable metrics.
Mar 11, 2023 01:06
@RouxMartin well put.
Mar 9, 2023 11:32
@RouxMartin In general I agree with you. UX isn't about what my preference is, but rather what is likely to be a preference for most users of a given product. I have some preferences that are very different from most people, and it's my job to put those aside and design for the customer.
Mar 9, 2023 11:30
@GeroldBroser I'm not sure how long they can be edited. It's not something that I've ever needed to know.
Mar 6, 2023 13:11
@GeroldBroser It has nothing to do with anywhere that I'm from. It's connected to my name, but is also from an old IRC nick that I used back in the day. I'm from all over, but I live in Portugal right now.
Mar 5, 2023 15:49
The comments really became more of a chat, and that isn't the intended goal of the comments from a post.
Mar 5, 2023 15:48
@GeroldBroserreinstatesMonica and @AndrewMartin, I've deleted several comments from both of you and moved this to chat.
