The only thing I'm worried about is, now that the new rMBP have everything as one unit, you basically have to replace the whole machine if something breaks.
@MichaelT My daily workload will include about 20 browser tabs, Xcode, iTunes, Mail, and IMessage, usually all at the same time. Occasionally I'd like to also run Photoshop/Sketch on top of that, although nothing to heavy.
@MichaelT My options are an i5 dual-core w/ 8gb ram with AppleCare, i5 dual core w/ 16gb ram without AppleCare, or an (refurbished) i7 quad-core w/ 8 gb ram without AppleCare
@CharlesWesley Try to do a bit of research first. If you don't find anything (you should), that's probably a Stack Overflow question... but it should be Googleable.
More of a general question: are there any specific resources (online or otherwise) outside of my professor and TAs that are helpful for finding different explanations of concepts?
Hey all! So I'm a college freshman currently taking Linear Algebra. The program I'm part of is accelerated, and the level of competition in the class is very high. I'm learning tons, and enjoying it, but it is definitely a lot of work as I don't seem to be as naturally gifted as the other students in the class. Does anybody have any advice on how to best study for a Lin Al class that has a 50/50 focus on the conceptual and computational aspects of the subject? Or maybe just some general advice?
@allquixotic Thank you for the advice! An external drive is definitely an option. This computer is going to be used for 80% dev work, 20% play. The vast majority of media will be stored on my desktop.
@allquixotic I see what you're saying... my thought process right now is to get the 16gb of ram and the 256gb storage and wait until I get a bit more cash to pay for AppleCare
@allquixotic On my current desktop (10gb ram and Windows), I rarely go over 6 gb ram... but I've never done much programming with large IDEs... I usuaally stick to Sublime for Web development.
My workflow is moderate... I'm going to start working with Xcode and making iOS and OS X apps, as well as my usual web development (Ruby or Python) stack, plus a bit of C++ development. I'll also have Photoshop running and about 25 Safari tabs open. Occasionally, I'll run one VM. Is the RAM upgrade worth it for me, or should I go for more storage? (sorry I wasn't done typing)
Hey everyone! I've got a question: I'm buying my first Mac... a 13" Macbook Pro w/ Retina. My budget isn't very high, so I can only get the i5 dual core processor. That said, I'm getting at LEAST 8gb of ram. I'm debating whether to go for another RAM upgrade (to 16gb) or bump up my flash storage (from 128 to 256gb).
My budget will only allow me to get the 13" rMBP with the dual core i5 processor. I know I'm getting at least 8gb of ram. Will that be enough, or should I go with the 16gb? I'm going to start working with Xcode and making iOS and OS X apps, as well as my usual web development (Ruby or Python) stack. I'll also have Photoshop running and about 25 Safari tabs open. Occasionally, I'll run one VM.
