@Mitch - Besides, don't blame Shakespeare, blame the authors who actually wrote the stuff he takes credit for. (If any angry mobs are looking for me, I'll be in the next county.)

I would say that 'cause is as legitimate as, say, what're, but the apostrophe must be included when written.

The general rule for acronyms and abbreviations is that you should assume "normal" pronunciation for your audience. If they're most likely to read it as "em gee salt" then you'd use "an". If "magnesium salt" then you'd use "a". You have to make the call as to how it will be pronounced.

Certainly, in rural areas of the US, it's not unusual to describe someone as your "cousin", even if they are only distantly related to you.

@BipedalJoe -- Traps and related mechanisms for interrupting control flow were not terribly organized in many cases, and often the terminology was poorly chosen.
Jun 4, 2023 20:30
@BipedalJoe - I graduated from college with an EE degree in 1972 and immediately went to work in the computer industry. The term "trap" (with the above meaning) was fairly common from about 1970 onward, and fell out of use, as close as I can recall, in the late 70s.

@MarcInManhattan - I've, in the last couple of days, heard numerous expressions such as "the second Elizabethan era", out of the mouths of apparently well-educated TV commentators, etc.

Another possibility is that the floor is electrified. This could be due to a nearby wire that has failed insulation and is sitting in a damp spot. However, this would not usually result in a DC reading.
Sep 5, 2022 14:12
@Lefty - There is the possibility that induction plays a role.
Sep 5, 2022 14:12
@crip659 - You can get DC from galvanic reactions.

It's more likely that you're "sharing" your electricity.

It's "dubyuh-dee-forty". That's clearly what is being said in the video.

At one time I got permission from my manager to regularly use his office for changing cycling clothes. Some managers would feel that encouraging cycling it a good thing, for health and morale.

Questions about unresolved current events and issues currently under investigation by a court of law, government, or other similar investigative body are off-topic because there is insufficient data for a meaningful answer.

@JamesK - An early example would be railroads. They lobbied for imminent domain laws, freedom from property taxes, etc, and got a major boost with the legislation surrounding the Transcontinental Railroad.

There has long been a segment of the political spectrum that has favored plutocracy. Since maybe 1960 this segment has increasingly aligned with Republicans, but it has existed since the Civil War, at least, aligning with whatever party served it's needs.

Yeah, it's "acceptable" but not great.

I certainly observed this in the 50s and 60s, though I get the impression that it was far more common earlier.

Dec 20, 2020 04:50
Oops! When you paste "has" ahead of it it's no longer "simple past".
Dec 20, 2020 04:50
It's incorrect because it's an improperly constructed instance of past perfect.
Dec 20, 2020 04:50
Because English.
Dec 20, 2020 04:50
Look up "past perfect"!! "Has fallen" is past perfect, and requires the past participle ("fallen") rather than simple past tense ("fell"). These are the "rules", meaning your English teacher will slap your hand with a ruler if you violate them. It does not mean that you cannot use "has fell" if you want to, it will just not be "correct" and will sound "off" to many people.
Dec 20, 2020 04:50
I'm saying look up "past perfect". And note that it uses the "past participle" version of the verb.
Dec 20, 2020 04:50
"No one fell out the window."

When I did this I gave the programs to some of my coworkers to try out. Since the programs were labor-saving several of the coworkers latched onto them, and eventually it came to the attention of management (who then tasked me with a larger application based on one of them).
