@MartinSleziak Thanks Martin. :)

@grg Love it! I suspect someone figured this out purely by chance, but who knows, maybe not. Either way I suspect this will be fixed reasonably quickly.
Mar 30, 2023 05:14
@Tetsujin LOL Seems like you're a Jack of all trades kind of guy! :)
Feb 12, 2023 23:54
@KJG No worries! All of the Mods are here to help, as are many other community members. :)
Feb 12, 2023 23:53
@Tetsujin That's awesome news! :) Hope it gives you many years of good service!
Jan 30, 2023 05:53
In summary, no major fail points, just the risk of buying/using 10yr old hardware. And yes, 15" was the biggest screen available in the mid-2012 models. Only you can make a judgment call on what level of risk you're willing to take, and whether or not another option may meet your needs for running macOS Mojave. I know you're not a 'laptop' person, so figure you obviously have a particular need if that's the path you're taking. Wish you all the best in your endeavours! :)
Jan 30, 2023 05:48
Not sure how readily available the mid-2012s are in your location, so you may not be able to be too picky on the model you get, but if you're going to upgrade it anyway that may not be too much of a consideration anyway. One thing to note is that these models can actually use 16GB RAM (not just the 8GB Apple says), so you'd probably want to upgrade the RAM as well if you can't get one someone else has already upgraded.
Jan 30, 2023 05:44
But, (you knew there was going to be a 'but' in there, right?), it is officially an obsolete model which means no support whatsoever, no security updates, and at times difficulty finding parts if you need them. So, if you ever need to do some sort of repair (a real consideration for a 10yr old computer), you could run into problems. That said, upgrading the RAM and drive, and replacing the battery, are all still fairly easy to do.
Jan 30, 2023 05:44
@Tetsujin Hmm, tough one. In the history of MacBook Pros, this is one of the better models released, so from that point of view it's a good choice. I actually still have a 13" 2012 model in my collection. :)
Jan 1, 2023 22:48
Happy New Year everyone! :) I hope 2023 brings you joy and good health.
Apr 26, 2021 04:37
@JBis Not surprising, as you're a valued member of our community. You know your stuff and are highly engaged, and your impact is a testament to that. :) And likewise, I can relate to your view that your best answers aren't the most highly voted. Some of the answers I'm most proud of, or spent a lot of time on, aren't highly voted - but knowing I helped a user is reward enough. :)
Apr 23, 2021 02:28
@JBis Agreed that it's a bad UX choice, especially not providing the user with some sort of useful prompt. However, the decision not to natively support this is deliberate (for whatever reason), so a 'fix' would require a change in their thinking, rather than having to fix a bug per se.
Apr 22, 2021 03:21
@Wowfunhappy Basically because VMware have done a shocking job in marketing and communications. And, as you mentioned, their website is very confusing. I'd go as far as to say that it's actually broken in many browsers. It's a shame, because Parallel's policies can really irk people up the wrong way, and some decent competition from VMware would be most welcome.
Apr 15, 2021 23:05
@JBis LOL, talk about something getting missed in UAT. </sigh>
Apr 8, 2021 23:12
@Tetsujin That'd make sense. :) Also something easy to test out.
Apr 7, 2021 01:06
@Tetsujin I've added more info to my answer to clarify when download info isn't actually recorded (such as using private browsing etc), so I'm not sure if that explains why you only had four items listed. Re JDownloader, I haven't used that in about six years, so can't really comment on how it treats user privacy, but based on your comment it seems to work so that downloads aren't recorded. :)
Jan 3, 2021 09:36
@Tetsujin LOL Yep, I did. :(

@JBis Please share it when you do. :)
Dec 28, 2020 09:51
@JBis Yeah it does, but it's got a fair way to go before it's stable. No doubt they'll get there in the end. Looking forward to doing some real life comparisons between Intel based Macs and M1 based Macs.

So, it's Christmas morning here down under. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to everyone! I hope you have an awesome and safe day, whatever you're doing! :)

@nohillside Appreciate that! :)
Dec 17, 2020 10:54
@nohillside Lucky you! :) Well, COVID-19 may have delayed things, but I still plan to make a trip to your neck of the woods sometime in the next few years. I guess time will tell, but experiencing a "white Christmas" once in my life may not be a bad thing to have on my bucket list. :)
Dec 17, 2020 10:49
@nohillside Wow! Nice photo. Did you take it?
Dec 17, 2020 10:39
@nohillside Yes it is! But for me it's not winter, so, you know, I can't relate to the Winter bash so much. Instead I have to live in envy (and in the heat)! LOL
Aug 15, 2020 01:07
@JBis It's actually a very clever ad by Epic Games and strikes at the heart of Apple (albeit one without Steve Jobs present). That said, it's not just Apple now, but Google as well. It will be interesting to see how these App Store 'monopolies' fair in the courts (both legal and public opinion).
Aug 15, 2020 01:04
@JBis Agree with the others. That is, when an iPhone with 5G is launched, it'll be backwards compatible with 4G, 3G and 2G. The 5G chipsets are backwards compatible down to 2G because many parts of the world still use 2G cellular networks.

@lhf Did you wanna try voting again on the post you flagged?

@JBis Love it! LOL
May 28, 2020 11:03
@gokul It's late here, so I've just posted a couple of comments.
May 5, 2020 22:22
@bmike Agreed, a lot of new/revised top notch software starting to appear on iOS/iPadOS. I think a renaissance for macOS isn't too far away either, and gotta love that! :)
May 4, 2020 08:28
@Daniel Wow Daniel, that's a blast from the past! I remember using Bank Street Writer and actually still have the original floppies somewhere. If only I had a working Apple ][ series computer to run it on. :)
May 1, 2020 03:48
@Allan Ditto! Ah, the memories come flooding back! :)
Apr 25, 2020 06:13
@NimeshNeema No worries, we're glad to help. Just let us know if we've missed anything, but I think we got there in the end. :)
Apr 25, 2020 06:00
@NimeshNeema Ok, I'll take a look.
Apr 18, 2020 23:09
@bmike Nice pick-up on the update/change. :)
Apr 13, 2020 00:10
@ankii Yeah, I've got 4 of my Macs on the task. One of them is my iMac Pro, which is running four clients (one directly, the other three in 3 separate virtual machines - Win10, Sierra, El Capitan). Very impressed with the iMac Pro (can't even hear the fan at all), so am gonna add a 4th virtual machine today to see how it goes. I'm not really on the computer/online much at the moment (still recovering from eye surgery), so this is a good time for me to use my CPU power 24/7. :)
Apr 11, 2020 00:04
Now that I’ve said all of that, if you’re still concerned (you’re only human after all), by all means set the folding power to light. Remember, this isn't so much a race as it is a marathon, every little bit helps whether it's done in a few hours or a few days. :) And, if it’s an older Mac, setting the folding power to Light may not be a bad idea since you probably don’t know what kind of life the Mac has had previously.
Apr 11, 2020 00:04
I can't say I've really noticed the % jumping around as you describe, although I’m not really watching it that closely. I have noticed the ETA (it's below the progress bar) jump around quite a bit though (this is understandable as the speed of folding still depends on what else the Mac is doing at the time, so the ETA will change regularly in response).
Apr 11, 2020 00:04
But, for one's own sanity, I would lower the folding power if you're going to be using your Mac for more than a few mins, just so you're not having to hear the fan, as that background noise can be quite irritating. Likewise, feel free to also do this if you're not using the Mac but it's in the same room as you and the background noise is distracting you.
Apr 11, 2020 00:04
You don’t specify your Mac model, but the System Management Controller (SMC) in your Mac will set fan speeds based on temperature readings inside your Mac. These are measured constantly in a feedback loop. If the SMC determines your CPU temperature gets too high, your Mac will take measures to avoid any damage. So, in summary it's not something you need to worry about, or to fixate on by using 3rd party software (as some users do).
Apr 11, 2020 00:04
@DaniilManokhin Hi Daniil, nice to hear from you! :)
Apr 5, 2020 08:08
@A.fm. So, just to clarify, you've reset both the NVRAM and SMC, as well as booted into Safe Mode and are finding that your MBP still doesn't restart/shutdown? And, you tried both processes for resetting the SMC? If so, I'd try resetting the SMC again (both ways if necessary) and if that still doesn't work I'd run Apple Diagnostics just to see if that finds anything:

Instead, I suggest the best place for this question is somewhere where a 'discussion' can take place. Perhaps the Super User Chat, or even a non-SE site altogether.
Jun 12, 2023 23:26
@nohillside In addition to this, the fact remains that as it's currently written it's not on topic here. And, even if it was edited to refer to specific software or even a specific Apple OS, it'd still be hard to get it on topic. It may be on topic elsewhere on the SE network, but I suspect the What types of questions should I avoid asking? page would apply on most if not all SE sites.

@DennisHackethal Haven't got time now to post a full answer with troubleshooting steps, but many routers will allow you to change settings such as the Channel. Maybe change that to 1, 6 or 11 and see what difference, if any, that makes. I'd also be tempted to shut everything down, reboot the router, and ensure your new MBP is one of the first (if not the first) devices connected to it without many (or any) of the others and see what happens. TBH, if these steps still don't help, I'd be tempted to test with a different router and see what happens with that.

It appears the OP really feels it belongs here, as they're looking for fan option within Gmail / Google Account. If this was more explicit in their Q would it be more on topic here? If so I was going to suggest they could also put a bounty on it. However, if you feel it really doesn't belong here, then I'll suggest it go to SU. I'll be guided by you.

Congrats to both @fsb and @NimeshNeema - It takes some courage to put your hat in the ring and just nominating is something you should each be commended for. I agree with the others - we're fortunate to have two high quality candidates and either way am sure the site will be better off. Thanks for nominating! :)
