That's the sandbox.
Dec 31, 2023 01:44
There is a Sandbox for getting feedback on questions before posting them but I don't know how active it is.

@Fulano Asking why people would bother with railguns might get it closed as opinion based.
Jun 19, 2020 08:35
@DTCooper Probably. Depends on where you are, preparation, how much the initial nuclear strike damages stuff etc.
Jun 19, 2020 08:34
I think the problem is all the various lurkers lurk at different times so there's very little conversation.
Jun 18, 2020 17:06
I think a lot of people drifted away in the wake of all the SE firing people stuff.
Jun 18, 2020 13:47
@dot_Sp0T Not many people. I check in sometimes.
Jun 10, 2020 21:18
@DTCooper Also, other than the general setting and similarity to the New California Republic's name that document doesn't seem too similar to Fallout.
Jun 10, 2020 21:08
Try looking at a variety of post-nuclear stories. The more variety of stuff you are ripping off the more original the world will seem.
Jun 10, 2020 13:00
Almost certainly not one in common use at any rate.
Jun 10, 2020 13:00
@HendrikLie I'm not sure there is a specific word for that.
Jun 8, 2020 15:14
@Shalvenay More flies and less birds for a start.
Jun 8, 2020 15:14
At least you took the sensible approach and went for readability. Too often people just fill books with made up words that are confusing or break the flow.
Jun 8, 2020 15:12
Yeah, just doing a find-replace probably won't work.
Jun 8, 2020 15:09
@Halfthawed What's it about.
Jun 8, 2020 15:08
High, it's for a D&D campaign so it's following mostly those tropes.
Jun 8, 2020 15:05
@Shalvenay Not too bad. Trying to build a reasonably coherent fantasy world in a very short time.
Jun 8, 2020 15:04
Hello @Shalvenay, hows things?
Jun 4, 2020 15:57
Looks good.
May 11, 2020 20:36
@KorvinStarmast Potentially also Inuit as a candidate for earliest stiff boots depending on if their boots are stiff or not.
May 11, 2020 20:33
@KorvinStarmast That's a good point. I wonder if any more nomadic/horse based cultures had boots earlier.
May 11, 2020 20:30
Tough to say. From what I can tell Greek boots were soft and you tied them to your leg, Roman ones I think were more stiff legged.
May 11, 2020 20:25
Looks like Rome and Egypt had boots but they were an upper class thing.
May 11, 2020 19:54
Yeah, I have hit a dead end on my research into it. Slipping a knife into a boot to hide it seems like a pretty simple idea so I would guess people probably began doing it pretty much as soon as they had boots, knives, and reasons to hide them.
May 11, 2020 19:47
I found a website suggesting the term "boot knife" originated from the early USA but I'd be willing to bet that the practise of carrying a knife in your boot is probably older.
May 11, 2020 19:09
I'm doing fine. Using the time to try to get all the 3D modelling done of some characters and stuff I had in mind.
May 11, 2020 18:35
@Shalvenay Hey, how's it going?
May 4, 2020 20:10
Or fly at light speed whilst writing.
May 4, 2020 20:09
If needed you can always create more time. Just get a device that speeds up the passage of time in the local area.
Apr 22, 2020 16:39
Probably the axe.
Apr 21, 2020 22:06
I wonder how strong you can make the bolt before you risk hurting the users arm with recoil.
Apr 17, 2020 14:27
Don't know if you've seen it but there are some designs for small geothermal plants that could work even in areas that aren't geothermal hotspots. Obviously the output is nowhere near what they get in Iceland and I think at the minute they aren't really economical to install but it could be useful in future for areas where wind/solar aren't great options.
Mar 29, 2020 19:09
i reckon the boost will be temporary depending on what happens. If the crisis is still going on in a few months and people are really feeling the economic losses then it might fall.
Mar 29, 2020 19:04
People who feel afraid wanting continuity and something familiar so the incumbent gets a boost maybe?
Mar 29, 2020 18:14
War often gives politicians a boost because of the patriotism it stirs up but it does seem odd to get a boost in a health crisis.
Mar 25, 2020 17:00
Depends if you believe true love exists or not.
Mar 24, 2020 00:39
That said comparing countries is tough since testing regimes differ. For instance the UK only tests people in hospital so more minor cases don't show up in the figures and the death rate ends up being inflated.
Mar 24, 2020 00:37
Europe is a weird one. Italy has a massive death toll and Feance, Spain UK etc are going the same way but Germany has probably the worlds lowest death rate.
Mar 9, 2020 09:46
@Halfthawed That source doesn't say being gay is a choice though. It says it is probably not biological. There is a major difference.
Mar 8, 2020 09:26
Norway is quite nice but it has its own problems. Plus you can't just copy a country's laws and expect it to work in a different country with a different history and culture.
Mar 8, 2020 09:25
@TerranSwett In the UK you can't fire people for short-tetm illness. Firing people for anything is relatively controlled and you can't just fire someone without going through other steps first unless they comitted gross misconduct or fraud or something.
Mar 7, 2020 18:45
Plus most of the good ways to eat healthily cheaply involve buying in bulk and batch cooking which is hard to do if you don't have the capital to start with.
Mar 7, 2020 18:45
Eating healthily can be done cheaply but it is more difficult and tends not to make you feel as full so if you're hungry and don't have much money then it is easier and more tempting to go for the processed, high calorie/low nutrient option.
Mar 7, 2020 18:43
The thing with people in poverty being obese is that they are often simultaneously obese and malnourished because cheap, easy food tends to be pretty poor in nutrients.
Mar 6, 2020 19:14
To be honest a lot of social and economic problems can be solved by killing everyone.

Mar 6, 2020 19:13
If you think don't think death is a negative you can eliminate poverty by killing everyone.
Mar 6, 2020 19:13
Technically it's posdible to solve domething with no negatives as long as your sense of negatives sufficiently diverges from the norm.
Mar 6, 2020 19:05
You'd also end up increasing unemployment massively overnight as a bunch of soldiers need new jobs.

Nov 26, 2021 20:49
@HenryTaylor Your molecules are more ordered at a local scale than random gas clouds but the energy requirement to maintain life increases entropy as most of this energy is converted from more ordered forms into highly disordered heat. Entropy can only be decreased on a local scale. On the scale of the universe you can never decrease entropy.

I have read through this question and I no longer believe it to be too broad. It appears (correct me if I am wrong) to be asking for a list of question/research topics for Pureferret to look into in order to make their world believable. It is not asking for answers to these questions. Puerferret, you might want to try and make this clearer ion your question if you want it to be reopened.
