Would the unintentional component can be ascribed to the software developer who failed to foresee the consequences of some other cause? Would a system that counts days at 1:30am unintentionally count an extra day due to daylight savings not being accounted for? It seems somewhere, somehow a person was responsible for all the behavior of the computer.

ELU or ELL, it is fair, or perhaps obligatory, to point out arcane versus common usage. If in the normal course of everyday life in the New York suburbs one were to say "He is citizen", it would sound like a non-native speaker making a mistake. Not trying to oppugn the experts from an ultracrepidarian viewpoint, but "correct" can have a probability value depending on context.

I think the way the question is presented is triggering the matter-of-opinion close votes. This isn't a blog, and it isn't a forum in the traditional sense. There is a strict focus on authoritative answers with well-established references. Unfortunately, in this case it seems more like the whim on OED than any true underlying trend, so there may be no satisfactory answer.

We still teach in school that the sun rises in the east, rather than saying the earth rotates such that the sun will become visible in the east. (Sorry Hemingway, but no, it doesn't.) It is uncommon to adjust every day language usage to our updated world views. Much of the language predates the Enlightenment; be guided accordingly.

An OCR error that correct the to die seems unlikely, as does a translator error. Rube Goldberg may need to explain why a book about Hebrew, Greek and English would have a translation error from German.
May 22, 2023 15:39
I looked on ngram for "die words", and drill into the references. Here's one from The Interlinear Bible, Hebrew -- Greek - English, Volume 1 -- Genesis -Ruth: "It should help die trained student to remain sharp and fresh in his recognition of die meanings of all die words in any context. To the untrained pastor or teacher, it should be realized diat without some knowledge of the literal ...." Those are clearly typos for "the".

I believe Charles expressed his desire to be one of these, although I believe Urban Dictionary is wrong here: urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Tamponian

I like Noam Chomsky's perspective on a related topic. To paraphrase: It's an uninteresting question. Does a submarine swim? If you call what is does swimming, then it does. If not, it doesn't.

The term hardened is often used for software. The analogy "battle-tested" is a stronger version of "field tested", which could also apply.

Not committing and pushing code for days is a very noob mistake. Fortunately for you, weekends are also two days. BTW--Use git locally and exclude .git/ from svn to keep it clean. Branch and commit often. You'll have backups.

@Fuhrmanator: Well said and on point! Beer isn't simple here, it's a loaded term that carries unintended baggage, so it's best to avoid it.
Feb 5, 2017 01:04
@Fuhrmanator I can't imagine anyone is looking up "single" or "serving". Olga has a point that seems not to be sticking--using the word beer and assuming context will disambiguate is simply wrong. Think of graph captions, titles, section headings, and the audience of people who know that beer has definitions not applicable here, and are the main audience for the paper. It simple creates confusion. I'll go out on a limb and say that Olga was aware that a can was "a beer" and a bottle of beer was "a beer" when she asked the question.
Feb 5, 2017 01:04
@user1359 See nekomatic's comment. The OP isn't referencing time frames, but price. So you are saying "it's reasonable to conclude that the question without a time specifier would mean 'how many types?'". So your argument is "it's not ambiguous, it means the wrong thing".
Feb 5, 2017 01:04
Beer is overloaded here, so its use would be ambiguous.

I don't see why this would be an opposite, just another group? Cats and dogs aren't opposites.

I was surprised that Kaz asked you to be a moderator on a public board.

Nov 4, 2016 21:50
Well, he did quite an excellent job of that too
Nov 4, 2016 21:49
Billy Ray? Wasn't he Miley's boyfriend?
Nov 4, 2016 21:45
And a mullet?
Nov 4, 2016 21:45
I guess in C# you need Visual Studio, which doesn't get less
Nov 4, 2016 21:44
C is great if you want a small stack trace. to get a stack trace you have to pipe to less you need java.
Nov 4, 2016 21:43
Well... Go compile nicely, but that takes only a few moments. So you kinda forget.
Nov 4, 2016 21:42
I remember compiled languages.
Nov 4, 2016 21:42
@Christian s/kinda/exactly
Nov 4, 2016 21:40
@JeffQuick If you use modern programming tools, you can be much more productive, and have time for important things like this.
Nov 4, 2016 21:27
All kidding aside, that's kinda aggressive.
Nov 4, 2016 21:26
@Kaz. Okay, Jeff and I support you in nominating Jeff as a moderator. But I have to say, we're both dismayed--we were happy with the current moderators, and we're surprised that you're suggesting this.
Nov 4, 2016 21:24
Well, it was his first day on the job.
Nov 4, 2016 21:24
@JeffQuick i wouldn't say that. If Kaz wants to run, maybe he's the smartest stoner. But I guess he's supporting you.
Nov 4, 2016 21:24
Or Hillar^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Lincoln Chafee?
Nov 4, 2016 21:23
@JeffQuick Ben Carson?
Nov 4, 2016 21:22
Oh ... yeah ... we'll keep it between us.
Nov 4, 2016 21:22
Hmmm.... that is a good idea. I like Kaz's idea of nominating Jeff for moderator.
Nov 4, 2016 21:21
Unless you're suggesting Jeff?
Nov 4, 2016 21:21
@Kaz, okay, I'll keep it between us. But I'd consider supporting you if you wanted to run.
Nov 4, 2016 21:20
@JeffQuick You "Trumped" me with that one. Haha. But seriously, I think Kaz wants an election.

Nov 4, 2016 21:19
@Kaz I'm surprised that you're suggesting an election, are you unhappy?
Nov 4, 2016 21:15
I think elections are on Tuesday.
Nov 4, 2016 21:05
apple doesn't want you to color it or make it move. if it's not fun to play with, why have it?

Nov 4, 2016 21:34
Poor, stupid Kaz
Nov 4, 2016 21:34
Well, I guess he thinks that not feeding trolls will stop us
Nov 4, 2016 21:20
well, this is underway
Nov 4, 2016 21:15
because if we can't piss on the dreams of useless ranting twats, what good are we?
Nov 4, 2016 21:14
lol ... well let him know that we'll fight for his right to troll workplace until we can convince stackexchange to shut it down
Nov 4, 2016 21:10
actually, i thought you and walle were the same person
Nov 4, 2016 21:10

Nov 4, 2016 21:10

Nov 4, 2016 21:06
