The good news is that one can make sounds (but not music or rhythm) with an instrument not designed for sound such as .... a fork
Nov 20, 2023 12:07
@msh210 good push but everything I checked confirmed that (1) fixing instruments (even if one considers it tuning) is either bone or make be patish which makes it forbidden, (2) even touching such instruments is forbidden because of mukze - either kli shemelachto leissur or if very valuable machmat chisaron kis and (3) even an "instrument" one cannot tune such as a bell is forbidden. As such I think it is pretty clear that fixing is fixing, not tuning, although I liked your initial idea

@msh210 they have a weird group on Telegram against kabala, which link I removed, I don't quite see what an answer like this has to do on MY. It doesn't answer the question, promotes a Telegram group, is Hebrew only, etc.

I'm a bit surprised this is still up and not yet deleted. I would have thought it qualifies as missionary work

It is the first time I remember such a "concerted attack" although a mild one content wise. I fail to see the purpose as they will run out of users at some point but some people have strange hobbies
Jan 18, 2023 16:57
I am curious if the moderators would care to comment on the "diagonal menorah" user who pops up from all sides to post the same answer. Is this someone who created all sorts of users years ago and now uses them? A concerted network of friends? Are you able to share anything e.g., whether all these users originate from the same IP address?

Struggling with the tags on this question, maybe one of you can help. For sure not the current ones. Gentiles would be one. What are the others? judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/125908/…

@Kazibácsi fully agree
Jul 15, 2021 10:51
Often reminds me we don't the value in olam haba of our mitsvot and aveirot. Probably not what we would expect "logically"
Jul 15, 2021 10:51
For me, MY is a place to learn, so I don't care, but it is still quite weird
Jul 15, 2021 10:50
Here is what I discovered

- simple, to the point, answers that make the Hot Stuff list often elicit lots of votes from non MY users
- answers to complicated questions, where even serious MY users don't know the answer offhand, tend to elicit few upvotes. I think people who read the answer are afraid they can't judge if correct or not, and are afraid of upvoting an incorrect answer. Happens to a lot of exotic kashrut questions where I know the answer is correct for checking with rabbanim but it is not obvious
Jul 15, 2021 10:48
Against that I often worked really hard on difficult halachic questions incl. asking a few rabbanim for sources, etc. - sometimes with 0-2 votes
Jul 15, 2021 10:48
@Kazibácsi I am with you and it frustrates the hell out of me. My records are 23 votes for judaism.stackexchange.com/a/98567/11501 and 21 votes for judaism.stackexchange.com/a/115459/11501 - you and I can agree none of it is worth that much even if they were helpful to the questioner
Jul 4, 2021 18:56
@DoubleAA you deleted a question (re 3 angels) where I had an answer I liked. Is that because the question was poorly phrased? Or because the user was problematic in some way? I'm wondering whether to ask a similar question and self-answer but don't want to create more trouble
Jan 19, 2021 04:14
This is on Skeptics - maybe some of you will want to answer there

Q: Did Jewish ritual circumcision become a more invasive procedure in 140 CE?

Björn LindqvistOne can envision two different methods to circumcize a penis based on where the cut is placed. The first method involves placing the cut after the glans and the second placing it before the glans. The first method would expose the urethra, but leave most of the glans covered, while the second met...

@Mithical sorry, I understand what you mean, I thought it was the number of mishnayot done/total mishnayot but that is not the case
Jan 27, 2020 07:43
@Mithical it cannot be - there are many other places where there is a partial count of mishnayot - where the tractate is not done
Jan 27, 2020 06:12
@IsaacMoses I am curious why you rolled back my changes on judaism.meta.stackexchange.com/posts/5104/revisions - the count of mishnayot already covered is not correct on a number of masechtot and I corrected two of them (Ketubot is another incorrect). Do you see it different?

Did something change recently in the suspension algorithm? The home page shows two frequent users (AB and TH) got suspended for a month. Coincidence or recent changes with a lower threshold?
Dec 3, 2019 04:40
@DoubleAA interesting, I was aware of this but not what you are linking to. The space saving step is clearly to wait a year to collect the decomposed body before storing it for eternity. We'll have to see how this picks up, my guess is society will be even more conservative with burial that it is already in other areas

@peterhsaysreinstateMonica msh comment was not about you - but about a question asked on the main site (click on the time of the question to see it)
Nov 14, 2019 19:41
@MonicaCellio well, experimentation is good, I have updated my profile with a blurb of text and 2 links to your meta post and the blog post you mention. Tell me if you'd do it differently and let's see what happens

@hazoriz I didn't know this but one relevant gemara is sefaria.org/Ketubot.62b.3?lang=bi&with=Rashi&lang2=en
Oct 20, 2019 10:37
@IsaacMoses regarding Daniel's learning, I think he was asking (you) whether he can "double count" his learning, in which case he would "simply" have to locate/ask questions on the chapters which are not yet claimed
Oct 20, 2019 10:35
but in any case it is the intention and message which matter
Oct 20, 2019 10:35
@IsaacMoses yes that it is within my capabilities but I thought there was some value in using something that might become a bit more viral (from here)
Oct 20, 2019 09:27
I liked what Isaac had done to his profile pic but am not great with pictures. But now there is this so I had no excuses anymore

@IsaacMoses I am genuinely shocked by this comment (not of yours) judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/108926/… and would ask that you please remove it
Oct 10, 2019 12:51
@IsaacMoses Yashar Koach. And as I noted on Megila and Shabbat, they are also done, even if the person who "holds" the last chapter doesn't complete the learning, because I learned it as well. Moed Katan is another where someone holds a reservation for a long time - we could easily finish the tractate otherwise. You might need a mechanism to "unfreeze" a reservation after 30 days/3 months/whatever seems reasonable to you
Oct 6, 2019 18:20
@MonicaCellio this software development analogy seems to be the only thing you really liked in that whole saga :->
Oct 6, 2019 18:19
61/9 not as bad as I thought - thanks!
Oct 6, 2019 18:18
@MonicaCellio agree on (a) and will adjust. (b) is for me included under 3.3 - even if I believe any healthy process would reinstate you, it is hard to state it should be done without having the full factbase (which we don't have since it happened in TL). And I am trying to be impartial

@MoriaHise as you understand from the comments, this site works best when you put as much as context as you have in the question (not in the comments) so people can give you their best answer. As of now, no one really knows what you know and expect? Specifically, when you write "according to the Rebbe", where did you see this? in some of his writings? Or you heard it from someone? Most of us are fairly well-read Jewishly and never heard this before, so please understand the surprise and questions. We also want Mashiach now and pray for it 3+ times a day
Mar 25 00:37
Who said Mashiach was here? Who are these scholars?

May 22, 2024 14:11
Imagine a world where no Jew becomes a doctor - wouldn't that be a drama?

Re: expensive tefilin. I'm sure they exist. The same way Ferraris and Porsches exist. But 1500$ gets you very high quality tefilin, no need to get crazy with more unless you can afford it.
Jul 12, 2023 12:05
Detail maybe but high quality tefilin can be bought for USD 1200-1500 in Israel, not sure where you heard 5-7000$. Happy to share sources if relevant, although it seems a small issue in the broader set of issues you are facing
Jul 12, 2023 12:05
I feel for you. Don't forget that a non-Jew can serve God through the 7 mitzvot (and this requires quite some study, as it is not simple either) and doesn't need to convert. Yes converting is complicated even in the US, Europe or Israel and yes it requires living in a community, as it is nearly impossible to learn how to be a Jew from books only. But again it is not the only way, maybe not even the preferred way

Mar 24, 2022 02:35
The question is interesting but would be easier to answer if you didn't related it to the RU-UKR war - any war between gentiles nations should give you the answer you are requiring. And are wars ever justified? There is always a side which attacks and one which defends.

Aug 7, 2020 17:39
I don't think it is possible to answer without seeing the passage. You can use Sefaria on Sanhedrin to link the specific passage - it has Steinsaltz English translation, see here

Nov 7, 2019 10:57
@TurkHill Chelek is the name of the 10th chapter of Masechet Sanhedrin. You probably mean Rambam's commentary to this chapter
