I'm glad I was able to help, cheers :)

if still failed, `cat /home/m/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log` to see error fb8 permission denied message still there or not.
if not there, post the new log here.
If still there, you may better ask a question with that info OR try to install Ubuntu Desktop 17.
Nov 23, 2017 19:01
If still failed after reboot, try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-legacy and /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config steps mentioned at the thread.
Nov 23, 2017 18:59
reboot
Nov 23, 2017 18:59
then remove the startx at rc.local, and retry
Nov 23, 2017 18:59
add m user to video group.
Nov 23, 2017 18:58
sudo usermod -a -G audio m
sudo usermod -a -G video m
Nov 23, 2017 18:42
since your log also shows "(EE) open /dev/fb8: Permission denied "
Nov 23, 2017 18:40
it mostlikely is because of permission issue, since ~/.profile run startx as non-root user , but /etc/rc.local run starts as root.
Nov 23, 2017 18:38
you put it in rc.local ?
Nov 23, 2017 18:37
how did you test to know it only works by fb8 ?
Nov 23, 2017 18:33
what's the output of "ls -la /dev/fb*" ?
Nov 23, 2017 18:31
and don't change back to "graphical.target" now to test.
Nov 23, 2017 18:30
did you tried put startx back to rc.local and reboot ?
Nov 23, 2017 18:28
if you put it back and do "sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target" , you can see your screen again.
Nov 23, 2017 18:25
What you put in rc.local ? "cat /etc/rc.local" ?
Nov 23, 2017 18:05
cat /home/m/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log ?
Nov 23, 2017 18:03
And "cat /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config"
Nov 23, 2017 18:01
then try fb8 also
Nov 23, 2017 17:58
you changed to FRAMEBUFFE=/dev/fb1 already ?
Nov 23, 2017 17:58
is ok, just do it after reboot
Nov 23, 2017 17:57
Also "cat /home/m/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log"
Nov 23, 2017 17:54
Also, ls -la /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/
Nov 23, 2017 17:52
Change your startx to "FRAMEBUFFER=/dev/fb1 startx > /tmp/my.log 2>&1"
Nov 23, 2017 17:34
also try "Xorg -configure"
Nov 23, 2017 17:30
* asterisk at the end
Nov 23, 2017 17:29
sudo apt-get purge nvidia-*
Nov 23, 2017 17:29
try this: "sudo apt-get purge nvidia-"
Nov 23, 2017 17:22
cat /tmp/my.log after reboot.
Nov 23, 2017 17:20
then reboot again to see the log.
Nov 23, 2017 17:20
change startx to "startx > /tmp/my.log 2>&1"
Nov 23, 2017 17:15
"ls -la /tmp/" still same ? No file /tmp/test1 ?
Nov 23, 2017 17:15
"ls -la /tmp/" still same ? No/tmp/test1 ?
Nov 23, 2017 17:10
nvm, just reboot after edit startx
Nov 23, 2017 17:09
wait, one more thing
Nov 23, 2017 17:09
edit the "exec startx -- -nocursor" to "startx" in ~/.profile, done ? reboot it to see.
Nov 23, 2017 17:06
The reason I want you to edit is because it will shows log indicated it's still running instead of splash screen when boot up, So you will not think it hang.
Nov 23, 2017 17:05
never mind, forget about it.
Nov 23, 2017 17:04
sudo cp /usr/share/grub/default/grub /etc/default/
Nov 23, 2017 17:02
And edit the "exec startx -- -nocursor" to "startx" in ~/.profile
Nov 23, 2017 17:01
then edit to remove the "#!/usr/bin/env bash " in /home/m/.xinitrc.
Nov 23, 2017 16:59
vimx is vi in your system.
Nov 23, 2017 16:59
Can you do this way:
"sudo vimx /etc/default/grub"

edit the "quiet splash" to "text"

then do "sudo update-grub"
