I've had to take vacation shortly after starting a new job, but I informed them prior to signing the contract. This is underhanded behavior, and I wouldn't put up with it. Unless he's by far the best candidate, I'd be contacting the next guy on the list, and firing this clown. @StephanBranczyk brings up some very good reasons to be wary of this guy.

Dec 3, 2019 15:45
@StephanBranczyk I don't remember asking your opinion, or analysis. I also don't like your tone. Take it somewhere else.
Nov 29, 2019 19:16
@zovitssupportsgofundmonica - exactly. Had this happen to a mechanic friend of mine who's a very solid and trustworthy guy. Some tools went missing when he was the one responsible for locking up the shop. Did he take them? No. Another guy was picked up by his friend, who came into the shop for all of 5 minutes - he probably stole them. But my friend had the keys, and thus the responsibility. He had to replace the missing (and expensive) tools, and wasn't trusted to work unsupervised in the shop again for almost a year. The inconvenienced owner didn't care about the details.
Nov 29, 2019 19:16
@andreasrejbrand - you believe in redemption. Many don't. Most people would simply not want to take the risk - employers wouldn't want to risk having expensive equipment potentially go missing.

Dec 1, 2019 15:23
@daisy - that's because we're always looking to optimize our communications. It's why acronyms in general are pretty popular.

Install a blue-light filter such as f.lux, and set it to a fairly low setting. You'll find that it does wonders for your eyes, and by extension, help you focus a little later in the afternoon. Getting enough rest, and maybe working out will help with you as well.

Nov 22, 2019 12:46
This all sounds like a recipe for disaster, and the sh!t that's building up is likely to hit the fan, at which point he'll likely look for a scapegoat. In your shoes, I'd look for a new job. Not because you're bound to be fired, or facing imminent danger, but because this state of affairs is unsatisfying, unhealthy, unlikely to improve, and likely to blow up in someone's face sooner rather than later. After switching jobs this year, I can confidently state that working with sane, and honest people is very pleasant. Give it a try.

In that case you're on a bit of an ego trip. They don't owe you anything. No random company does. Get over it, and move on with your life. If they truly are unreasonable, then you dodged a bullet, and you're better off for it.
Nov 19, 2019 12:11
So what's your question, exactly? It seems to me like you're looking for someone to validate your opinion on the matter. The fact is that this company has rejected you, whether for a good reason, or not. It sucks. Move on with your life.

Nov 9, 2019 08:44
@johnspiegel - libel is notoriously difficult to prove in a court of law. Likely, the OP doesn't actually have a case, although it's good that HR is worried about the company image. At the end of the day, however, that well is probably poisoned, and he should move on to a less drama-prone place of employment.

If this knowledge is so valuable, why not go into business for yourself?

You claim that the zombies are only a problem on land, but why couldn't a zombie walk along the bottom of the sea, and come up on the beaches of the peninsula? Or be carried by the tide to the same destination?

A monster hunter who values his life would not take two good weapons and create one crappy one, he'd have two very specialized weapons.

Aug 9, 2019 15:21
Frankly, based on the vague requirements listed, I think this question is un-answerable. People are citing figures and timelines that take no practical considerations under advisement, and the whole thing makes no sense whatsoever. You just can't build a massive, dam-like wall around a city in less than a few decades. The foundation alone would take years to compact, pour, cure, etc. And this while creatures from a different dimension try to eat your workers, and a magical radiation plague kills them? Yea, right.

"Option B is to discuss this with your current employer." <- I wouldn't do that unless there was some clear clause in my contract stating that any programming work I do is somehow the property of the company I'm employed with. In which case I wouldn't be employed there, because that's a tyrannical clause. Don't share details you don't absolutely have to with your employer because it builds the impression that you somehow need their permission to do something in your own private life. It sets a bad precedent, and is largely not the case.

Oct 2, 2018 16:14
I feel like you're performing mental gymnastics in order to try and explain away some very weird behavior.

Aug 7, 2018 14:47
one of the great evils that colonialism imposed on the people's of the world in the seventeenth century is an end to slavery and cannibalism. How's that for moral relativism?

Equating communism with religion is also quite droll, as communism is a modern, atheistic, post-religious ideology responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions of people across the globe (which, incidentally, is also characterized by moral relativism).

Last but not least, there's nothing morally ambiguous about plagiarism, especially in the world of academia. Passing other people's work off as your own is unjus

@aaron - The comment system is there to share ideas and facilitate communication, not derail the conversation with inflammatory interpretations that have nothing to do with the content of the post. Your latest comment similarly has nothing to do with debating actual facts, and constitutes a commentary on the performance of my post, which is not your concern. Your original recommendation may have been taken under consideration had stuck to the facts. You appear to still have some trouble doing that.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@aaron - it sounds like you are saying "Single mothers should not apply." <- not only did I not say that (there's lots of single parents for whom punctuality is not a problem), but it also sounds pretty sexist. So what I'm suggesting is that you not put words in my mouth. As for everything else, it's already been discussed to death. The voting system is there for a reason, use it.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@Aaron - still "sounds like" you were putting words in my mouth. Disagree with my position all you want, but stick to the facts. Your sexist interpretation of my post is not part of the conversation.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@aaron - please don't put words in my mouth, Aaron. Single motherhood has nothing to do with the conversation at hand, which is maintaining discipline in a professional environment. This woman is abusing the generosity of her employer, and her personal situation doesn't really matter - your personal life should be organized such that it doesn't conflict with your professional one. You can't keep making concessions to people who refuse to accept any responsibility for their actions; the leniency you speak of becomes self sabotage under those circumstances.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@dancrumb - ok, but this woman had already communicated her situation, and signed a contract saying that she'll be in by 8:30 (already a special accommodation). Yet she shows up 40 minutes late anyway. Just how lenient can any boss be before discipline breaks down altogether?
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@embee "single parents with children are a different class than others." <- well, no. They're all employees, and they all need to follow the rules, or find some other place of employment which have more lenient rules.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@LoganPickup - this is the reality of running a business. Management can only afford to be so generous. She is abusing everyone's trust and patience. At some point we must each take responsibility for our choices.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@dancrumb - are you asking us or telling us? I think it's pretty obvious that Don was giving an example. No need to be difficult.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@donthermidor_lobstermobster - precisely. And once she says "it's the children", her excuses become bulletproof. Except, of course, if one has a modicum of professionalism, in which case the answer becomes "That's irrelevant." Harsh, but no less true.
Jun 21, 2018 20:02
@jonh - I've witnessed this sort of behavior in several workplaces in the past, and it always leads to complications, and resentment. It kills the manager's credibility when one person is always allowed to get away with the sort of behavior that no one else is. Even if people are too polite to say anything to her face - or yours for that matter - don't think they haven't noticed, or aren't speaking among themselves. Their productivity will surely go down once they realize that others (her) are getting away with working many hours less themselves. It's something you need to get ahead of fast.

Jun 18, 2018 23:46
I think we both know very well that this only works in some industries, and even then only with some departments. I've worked in places with lax attendance policies, and even then some people eventually abuse the system, and make it very difficult for anyone else. If she were arriving 10 - 15 minute late, it would be one thing. 70 minutes later than everyone else, and more than 40 minutes late on a regular semi-basis is nothing short of ridiculous. If the others adopted the same attitude the business would be losing countless paid man-hours of work. She needs to conform, or find a new job.
Jun 18, 2018 23:46
I disagree pretty strongly. She has a responsibility to her family, sure, but she also has a responsibility to her employers, which you're rather quick to dismiss. And that responsibility goes above simply finishing her work whenever it's convenient for her to show her face in the office. The OP, and all of this woman's fellow employees are supposed to be understanding, and accept the double standard. However, this sort of behavior is incredibly corrosive to the team's esprit de corps, and will create a situation where more and more people will want special treatment.

@RichardU yea well, another trick of his was laying prisoners of war on a field and running plows over them. The Turks were afraid to face him, that much is true.
Apr 13, 2018 13:49
@Tinkeringbell I'm perfectly calm ;)
Apr 13, 2018 13:49
@Tinkeringbell is someone not being nice around here?
Apr 13, 2018 13:48
@Tinkeringbell that doesn't sound very friendly. What exactly were you implying?
Apr 13, 2018 13:47
I think a lot of that is legend. However, for hundreds of years the Romanian countries (the country was split in 3) alternated between control of the Turks, Austro-Hungarians, etc.

Some nobles were more interested in handing control to one group over another, and most of our kings only governed with the backing of one of the surrounding empires.

When Tepes came to power he killed his brother, who was a Turkish appointee, then slaughtered the nobles who had backed him. He himself was backed by the Austro-Hungarians, who would rather that the Turks were fought in Romania, than around Vienna
Apr 13, 2018 13:45
@sphennings on the contrary, a chat room is exactly the place to discuss things, because that's its purpose. Whether people become agitated or not is on them - being polite is a thing here, right?
Apr 13, 2018 13:43
@RichardU he's a "controversial" figure because he was just as chummy with the Turks as he was their enemy. However, he is considered one of our great kings, and we do learn a lot about him in school. He was brutal in handling nobles who did not agree with him, as well as Turkish prisoners of war, but that's not entirely uncommon when you're fighting a very asymmetric war. At the end of the day, he was a product of his times
Apr 13, 2018 13:42
so Romanians had to adapt .. when the Turks came calling literally every man of fighting age would pick up whatever they had at hand, and go fight. But you can't leave the fields untended for long, so the battles had to be decisive. That lead to some incredible victories, but also some very ugly defeats
Apr 13, 2018 13:40
@RichardU well, it's interesting, because at a time when Europeans were going to war with 5 - 6 thousand troops on a side in a MAJOR battle, the turks would invade with 200 000
Apr 13, 2018 13:40
@sphennings that sounds like a convenient way to deflect a conversation you'd like to avoid, because realistically you're never going to call this site a convenient place to have that conversation. Or this chat. Although many of you perfectly happy to discuss how white privilege is a thing just a few hours ago
Apr 13, 2018 13:36
@RichardU I'm Romanian, so I take special interest in Roman history. Funny enough, them being our ancestors is likely a 1600's propaganda campaign by the Catholic church, but that's not really mainstream atm
Apr 13, 2018 13:34
@RichardU I also love history, and the more I studied it, the more my views on certain topics have shifted
