General discussion for genealogy.stackexchange.com

Hi all, not sure if this sort of "advertising" is ok here, but if anyone is interested, I've written a review of Gramps for LWN.net which is now freely available: https://lwn.net/Articles/605409/

I don't think anyone here will find out something really new, though, it's more aimed at genealogy newbies. :)

I've personally started doing it as warmup for anything that uses my arms and it feels so good.
Jul 17, 2014 17:24
Here's an awesome handstand wrist (elbow, shoulder) warmup video: youtube.com/watch?v=ubySeJ3BnvI
Jul 12, 2014 23:39
And about the wrists, I climb and so my extensors are really stiff, been working on that for a while now.
Jul 12, 2014 23:37
I also follow (when I DO exercise) their foutine (available on fitloop.co ) and I'm quite happy with it. In fact, got my father to start doing it also and he's satisfied as well :)

I mostly hang around /r/bodyweightfitness, a lot of useful info there
Jul 12, 2014 23:34
:D
Jul 12, 2014 23:33
There's some good wrist mobility stuff in this pdf, you can check it out: kitlaughlin.com/docs/…
Jul 12, 2014 23:33
Yeah, my problem is that the closest park with suitable bars (and not perfect, just suitable) is about 15 mins away by foot. The park right around my corner doesn't have anything. :(
Jul 12, 2014 23:30
anyway, why are you doing wrist pushups, any particular goals?
Jul 12, 2014 23:30
Guess that's why grease the groove type things work well for me, I focus on a single thing and practice it all the time. Sure feels like I'll have problems down the road, though.
Jul 12, 2014 23:29
it's not that I don't enjoy exercising, it's that there's always so much else to do so I just never end up doing it.
Jul 12, 2014 23:29
Eh, I've always felt that motivation is the hardest. :)
Jul 12, 2014 23:25
Yup, definitely feel you there.
Jul 12, 2014 23:25
Yeah, it's from Foundation 1 I believe, that guy is quite respected in the community.
Jul 12, 2014 23:23
@HamZa I don't see why, if you can do a normal pull up you should be able to do this as well. Maybe not as far as the guys in the video, but still
Jul 12, 2014 23:22
@HamZa Apparently these wall runs ( youtube.com/watch?v=1okSA32sFWs ) are very helpful in achieving the handstand pushup.
Jul 10, 2014 13:47
'Bout the handstand, yeah, I was doing stomach to wall and peeling off occasionally, but I've been slacking off quite a bit so no progress there. I kinda don't have a convenient spot to do them (shocking, but true) so I'm just doing some frogstands to at least prepare my wrists. Got 'em down pat.
Jul 10, 2014 13:45
IMHO, it's just a show move, but hey, whatever floats your boat! For a similar, more useful/less cool move, consider the scapular pull-up: youtube.com/watch?v=R9mHV0of5I0
Jul 10, 2014 13:44
@HamZa Never seen that kind of move before, but note that he is holding his foot to the pole so it's basically a row performed vertically.
Jun 9, 2014 16:39
I'm still trying to get that handstand, just need to be practicing more often. Meanwhile, a simple grease the groove method was enough to give me an L-sit (about 5-10s, but a great start) and a straight arm frog stand. Small victories, what can I say. :)

Hello world! My fitness is the average distance of data points from the closest cluster center of mass. How is your fitness this summer and what are your goals? :D
Jan 13, 2014 16:16
@Amaterasu I don't see why not, just try to skirt around the medical and focus more on the rehabilitative. :)
Dec 25, 2013 02:34
Ultimately, the general fitness view (and what is usually preached here) is "calories in - calories out" and "eat enough protein", and your question is just skirting those issues. So the answer is going to be - eat it.. or don't. Just make sure you get enough macros/protein in while taking care of total intake. Specifics are not our concern. Might wanna try reddit on /r/fitness if they've an opinion, but it's likely to be about the same.
Dec 25, 2013 02:31
I think that, as it stands, the question is off-topic... but if you reformulate it somehow (maybe "How much xxx (protein) can I get from potato skins?" it might be an ok question.. not totally inscope, but passable.
Dec 21, 2013 11:25
Hub of activity, right there. :)
Dec 4, 2013 23:16
They just changed the toolbar and the chat shortcut is no longer there, so if you don't see me as often, that's why!

As far as bailing is concerned, it's literally a matter of 5 minutes, as long as you are not afraid. It's seriously the tipping point skill - before that handstand work wasn't very enjoyable (walking my hands up the wall every time, and especially back) and was somewhat of a chore, but after learning how to bail, you can HS whenever and it's way more fun. Still don't have the form down pat, but I'm getting there.
Nov 30, 2013 11:55
@Baarn The handstand or how to pirouette bail? The handstand is.. an ongoing process, and I've had a lot of breaks, but theoretically, a month or two should suffice provided you're training daily (and as frequently as possible during the day).
Nov 17, 2013 22:41
Thanks! Once you get your hands close enough to the wall, they're basically freestanding already!
Nov 17, 2013 15:42
I've been learning to pirouette bail the last week and it has helped a lot, finally had a few seconds of a freestanding handstand. Plus it's way way more fun now!
Nov 16, 2013 18:44
So guys, anyone here have a handstand or is training for one?
May 21, 2013 18:30
@IvoFlipse Well, it's basically done now, but thanks anway! You can pretend its really good and ooh and aaah a bit if you want, though: pastebin.com/L8Y5f0Pk
May 20, 2013 19:15
And when I say read, I mean "comment long enough to get it into a passable state"
May 20, 2013 19:15
Who wants to read the abstract of my thesis? :D
May 17, 2013 11:13
Phew, that turned out long-winded. I hope you get something from it -- what did you try and why do you think it didn't work? I didn't think my final results are particularly impressive, but I think the method is sound (and the improvement came after 3-4 weeks, not months of work).
May 17, 2013 11:10
(eg. SS recommends 5lbs for the press per workout, which comes down to 7.5 lbs a week, which is ~3.5 kg so not too far from my estimate)
May 17, 2013 11:09
I was probably a bit conservative with adding weight, but I had no weight-training experience at that time... still, if we say that pull-ups are comparable to the press in terms of muscles used, I don't think adding more weight faster would work for too long.
May 17, 2013 11:07
I think the key aspects of my approach was the higher volume at lower rep counts.
May 17, 2013 11:06
Nowadays, I rock-climb when I can and my max is at about 10-8-7, though I try to go "sternum to bar" and not just "chin over bar".
May 17, 2013 11:06
I stopped doing pull-ups regularly soon after so they kinda deteriorated. Also notable is that I didn't do much other exercise during this time, it was mainly just the pull-ups and occasional cardio.
May 17, 2013 11:05
I tried adding weight in a backpack, but it wasn't very comfortable (in the "up position" my body can't be perfectly vertical, so when going down the backpack hit me in the small of my back.. not painful, just not very comfortable).
May 17, 2013 11:04
So by the end of it when we tested, I had something like 14-13-12 or maybe 15-14-12, which was obviously a vast improvement.
May 17, 2013 11:03
So next time we started up, I got up to 7 again, and then started adding small weights... I had 1kg weights and I just put them in my pockets. I added two kilos per week

Focused chat about a unique genealogy topic announced at meta....
Jul 14, 2014 11:49
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. A lot of genealogical sites are US-centric (or immigration-centric) and that's mostly useless for me, though I do enjoy testing out my logical processes. :)
Jul 14, 2014 11:48
So yeah, re-examining the five points, I do feel that I'm at least striving towards them, maybe just 1) is tricky due to a general lack of records in Serbia.
Jul 14, 2014 11:47
@JanMurphy Definitely doing this and it comes down to careful citations - the age reported on a death certificate is less accurate than the birth date on the birth certificate, so knowing where the information comes from I can start with a rough estimate and improve when and if I find a more accurate source.
Jul 14, 2014 11:46
@JanMurphy Yeah, source citations are definitely something I do, and looking at the first few persons I researched (when I have a source but didn't cite as precisely as later on) I see that I've made the right call in being detailed there. :)
Jul 13, 2014 15:16
But yeah, y'all are working with much more data than I will ever have hope of finding (records basically just stop a mere 150-200 years ago for me), so I'm just kinda.. working with whatever I can get. These standards seem like too high a goal for the time being.
Jul 13, 2014 15:15
Hi @PolyGeo, @JanMurphy: I just popped in to see what's going on (why aren't these chats in the main chat room?).
