The Pitstop

For the motormouth in you! (mechanics.stackexchange.com)

There are lots of reasons but they include the fact that engineers are just better at what they do these days!

@User1974 I would use those to cut at an angle or flush to a blocking surface.
Apr 29 21:29
You might be able to read the total miles with a scanner. A quick Google implies that you'll need a "pro" model, though. A basic scanner likely just queries the gauge cluster

For real
Jun 14, 2024 10:56
RGR thanks for passing it on!
Jun 12, 2024 22:32
That's a good question @User1974. Are you asking to move it here? Or just letting us know?

That's an interesting application. As long as the valve cap is plastic, it might be fine. If there's any metal on metal, though, I'd expect corrosion and possibly those metal bits rust welding to each other.

@AndyD273, glad to hear that things went well. Yes, this room is always open for topics that might be adjacent to our nominal Stackexchange mandate but maybe don't really fit in the standard one question, one answer pattern.
Feb 28, 2024 21:37
@AndyD273 you're welcome to bring it up here in the chat room. I suspect there are people who have an idea. We're much more loosey goosey in this room! πŸ˜‰

Full disclosure: I envy the armor. There have definitely been times when I'd have felt better just having that layer of armor walking around an area that felt sketchy.
Jan 10, 2024 21:42
Right, I'm used to placing a lot of trust in drivers when I'm cycling on the road. I'm also aware that, the faster I go, the quicker I'd have to react to make up for someone's poor choices.
Jan 10, 2024 00:22
I'm glad that @RoryAlsop is here to answer the questions!
Jan 10, 2024 00:22
FWIW this is why I don't ride bikes that have a propulsion source that's more powerful than my feet :-)

@vitamind Hi!
Dec 18, 2023 19:19
I think I'm still the most proud of this answer:

I still think Joel was wrong from the beginning and I'd argue that history proved me right in the end. 🙂
Dec 18, 2023 19:14
Wow - I've been here almost thirteen years. A lot has happened since then!
Dec 18, 2023 19:12
@Pα΄€α΄œΚŸsᴛᴇʀ2 congrats!

Retirement seems like it's so far away. First, age. Second, OMG money!
Sep 27, 2023 23:42
If you're trying to make a dent more visible, you might try adding some texture to a white car. Erasable marker drawn on with a ruler from the top might show the contour line.
Hail damage sucks. It's so demoralizing!
Sep 18, 2023 20:35
She knows about electrons and stuff so I'm intimidated
Sep 18, 2023 20:34
@misk94555, I for real sent a text to an electronics woman at work just the other day: "Voltage shmoltage!"
She gave me a talking to. 😉
Sep 13, 2023 22:02
@misk94555 as a computer guy who learned most of my mechanics knowledge by osmosis, I'm fascinated by the question and haven't the slightest what the answer is! πŸ™‚
Aug 31, 2023 23:34
In the chat room, almost all kinds of chatting are welcome!
Jul 27, 2023 19:37
@Chenmunka please don't be shy if you think anyone is being a jerk. We all deserve a place where we can talk about something that we're crazy about without dealing with a bunch of nonsense and static!
Jul 3, 2023 15:41
Oozing walls does feel a little cursed. "Help, I'm in a horror garage!" πŸ˜‰
Jun 30, 2023 20:16
@GdD good to hear! My oil stains are down in the concrete. I should probably try some of my hard core grease removers but my expectations are limited!
Jun 23, 2023 01:15
@GdD oof. That's going to be tricky. A degreaser might help. Sometimes a slurry of powdered laundry detergent and water might emulsify the oil somewhat. It's going to be a journey.
I have some nasty stains in my garage so I'd be interested to hear what works for you!
Jun 16, 2023 13:48
Hey, whatever solves the problem! πŸ™‚
Jun 12, 2023 20:05
As someone who has posted questions like that, I tend to vote yes, on topic! 😉
There are times when there's just not enough information and questions like that tend to get voted down. For corner case parts, though, this site is sometimes the only one that has answered my questions!

Are those synonyms for what we would call the subframe in the US?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subframe
Apr 25, 2023 23:23
That is an interesting source - we all need manuals!
Apr 13, 2023 00:55
Feel free to put whatever links you like in your member profile, though
Apr 13, 2023 00:54
@JackBosma I think it depends on what you mean. Are you talking about a social network? If so, we already have one here, thanks.
Apr 12, 2023 23:32
Knockhill is another safety rating eater in Iracing. I'm looking for races on Nurburgring these days so I can do laps with many many turns in order to repair my rating. I don't want to lose my class A (even though I almost never race at that level)
Apr 12, 2023 00:30
Sorry Oulton Park
Apr 11, 2023 19:46
I end up doing some penance races just to keep my license! πŸ˜‰
Apr 11, 2023 19:46
It’s a hoot of a car but Oran Park is a safety rating eater. So small, so smashy!
Apr 7, 2023 00:55
Wow - the new FF1600 on IRacing is such distilled fun in a tiny package! :-)
Apr 4, 2023 21:27
On my current car, the lug bolts are generally disdainful of my impact wrench. However, after a good rattling, they give up to the breaker bar right away
Apr 4, 2023 17:37
Impact wrenches are the best. I have done dumb things with them (don't use them to put nuts on!) but they're usually 100% awesome. I often use mine on lug nuts as a threat. "If you don't come off this time, I'm putting the impact wrench back on! Wouldn't you like to just wrench off?"
Mar 4, 2023 19:31
They truly don't stink!
Mar 3, 2023 22:32
@Pα΄€α΄œΚŸsᴛᴇʀ2 it was a telework day for me: arrive at basement office at 0600, done by 1500! Commute time is one flight of stairs :-)
Oct 29, 2022 20:19
@RoryAlsop right and the whole point of the Cool Wall was to lean into the reality that their arbitrary cool rules were silly goofs! πŸ™‚
Oct 26, 2022 22:23
I would be concerned about design of the gauge, though. As in, is there a sender for the signal and an electrical connection to the gauge? Any possibility of a failure of the pressure fitting? that sort of thing
Oct 26, 2022 22:22
@GdD sorry, no. I've never had to install a pressure gauge.
Sep 25, 2022 19:31
@DennisJaheruddin that would be an interesting psychological study or even a machine learning project. It would obviously be entirely subjective but it wouldn’t be impossible to have a Tinder-type system that assessed a car based on whether you might like this one! πŸ˜‰
Sep 23, 2022 02:32
Youngest and I are hard-core rooting for Williams! We're really enjoying how anything halfway decent that happens to that team is scoring major press time these days :-)
Sep 23, 2022 02:31
@Pα΄€α΄œΚŸsᴛᴇʀ2 I've been watching qualifying and races with family via the F1 app which allows us to dodge most drama and focus on races (plus tech which the wife is super taken with!)
