Please identify if you can. It sounds symphonic. But I cannot remember any other context. Those snippets aren't in order or context either...

It's so hard to communicate over text, but perhaps this is somewhat meaningful:

I am having trouble remembering the title of a piece that I have stuck in my head.

Hi hi everyone.

I've always thought of a tritone as a perfect bisection of an octave.

I'm so pleased with the designs on this site. They've done one heck of a job.

Interestingly enough, I like the just intonation best. I guess it's because I play a fretless instrument: violin!

Op. stands for Opus, right?

It's something I'd like to write an essay on. If anyone has any interesting observations or studies that they've heard of, I'd love to hear of them.

Is it a fair statement that "Music tends towards entropy"? When you compare baroque music to 20th/21st century stuff -- say Vivaldi vs. Tchaikovsky -- the baroque master tended to follow the "rules" better than the modern genius. Nowadays, we have free jazz and 12 tone music. That would have been unthinkable to Bach. But in looking for the next "cheap thrill," art requires "breaking the rules."
Mar 13, 2017 16:55
@Zachiel Not really. That would probably fall under "shopping recommendation." On the other hand, questions about the use/operation of some software, like music notation software or recording software, are on topic and generally well-received.

(Get that? Make a note? That's music nerd humor. It's funny because notes, like in music!)

@Dom Thanks for the resource! I'll start plowing through these, and I'll make a note when I complete them.

Exactly, it seems like the only way to advance past basic elementary theory is by paying thousands of bucks to get a teacher or go to college or something. I just want to self teach.
Mar 5, 2017 15:29
Does anyone know of a good (free?) online way to learn music theory? I'm sick of reading about how to count in 4/4. I want to move on to the cool stuff. By looking at my answers/questions, one might have an idea of where I am right now. I can read treble clef very well, I understand ultra basic chord theory... Basically, I'm at about 6th grade music theory, but I want to start excelling.

Just an update for whoever cares about my headphone question earlier. I chose the Sennheiser HD 598SE headphones which almost perfectly fit my criteria. I love them, and they're a huge step up from the stock Apple EarPods that I've been using, even without using the headphone amp. I can highly recommend them (They plug straight into my electric piano! No worries about late-night practice sessions!)

@Soumil The conductor of my orchestra is going for his doctorate, but he says when he gets it he'll kind of keep it secret because a lot of orchestras consider people with excessively high degrees to be too theoretical.
Jan 16, 2017 06:48
Just a random mostly unrelated shopping recommendation question... I'm looking for a pair of on/over-ear (over=better) headphones that are preferably under $150. Most important criteria would definitely be sound quality. Not really sure where to ask this, but people here tend to know their way around the sound equipment market...

I'm working on a song right now with the violin that calls for a slur between a D on the G string and the open D string, many times, very quickly. Interesting stuff... K, done being awkward.

I gave myself a NASTY blister on my strumming finger. I can see clear through my finger. I know it's all part of building calluses, but it sure sucks like a vacuum cleaner.

I got a ukulele for Christmas. A tenor. It's real dandy.

I ended up just getting the chords for free on the internet, and transposing them to C so I could match the recording that I have. Half of the chords are wrong, but I can cross-reference other versions to correct them, and it's coming together. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Dec 15, 2016 15:52
Ok, so I did a little research, and it turns out that the recorded version is in yet another key, C, which only serves to further confuse things.
Dec 14, 2016 23:16
Does anyone know what key the Keith Green song "Asleep in the Light" is in? There appear to be two versions floating around on the internet, one in G and the other transposed two semi-tones above. Which is the original in?

I recognize that -- just like me -- atheists are people who have been convinced of what they believe. The danger is writing off someone else's belief as silly instead of confronting the differences in worldview head on -- there's no need for derision.

As I Christian myself, I feel it is worth noting that I personally find it offensive when people dismiss the belief in the existence of God as being "a funny story with no real relevance," or even "abhorrent." I don't agree with atheists -- but I respect them. A lot of atheists are truly brilliant people -- I can recognize that, and even though I am deeply concerned with the consequences of some of their ideas, I would never describe their beliefs as "a funny story."

Hey folks, for some reason it is all but impossible for me to find a specific instance of the Writs of Assistance being used. I can learn all about them in general on encyclopedia Britannica, wikipedia, and the like, but I want to see some actual examples of the writs of assistance being used in Britain in the 1760s. Does anyone specialize in that area of history and have some ideas of where I might look?

For example, if Iran completely destroys Israel in the future, like they've said they'd like to, and Israel knowingly declines to preemptively respond and is destroyed, they might count. It's a hot button example, I know, but it's all I can think of...

What are some examples of countries that failed to address military threats against themselves, and ended up either being seriously incapacitated or completely destroyed/without sovereignty?

Hello! I may or may not have made an account here to ask this question... But I hope it will generate some interesting discussion all the same.

Not all teachers are like this. My violin teacher didn't teach me to sight read until more than a year of playing had gone by. I used the Suzuki method, which I love, but it has very little emphasis on sight reading and very much on playing by ear. It has mostly to do with the way they were taught themselves.

What do you mean by "sounds 'good'"?

Jul 29, 2017 17:51
Whether or not the question is in the scope of the site, it's very construction is based on a false premise. An interesting discussion, not for SE, at any rate, would be about where countries get their national anthems. Perhaps a correlation could be found for why there is a disproportionate amount of major anthems.
Jul 29, 2017 17:49
A little late to this party, but I would like to point out that the question is based on a statistical fallacy. "Most national anthems are in major keys, therefore major keys are more popular than minor keys." It's specific to general, a false comparison. Comparing a subset of something to its whole. Maybe there's a reason for national anthems to be in major keys, like that usually people like to think happy thoughts about their country.
